Hello. I'm starting up DDO again, and want to be a rogue. I love the whole idea of being the trap guy/secret door guy. But, also I don't wanna be useless in combat.
Can someone hook me up with a good build? And beyond that, how should I level up? I've heard some people talk about taking a fighter level first thing or something, whatever that means.

If you're going to take even one level of rogue, you basically always take it at first level because the huge amount of skill points trumps everything else.
If you want to be the trap guy, you just need to keep those skills maxed (when possible), such as Search and Disable Device. You can mix in other classes and then at the next rogue level put skill points into the rogue-only skills to catch up on them and max them again if they aren't already.
Someone could do a rogue1/barbarian9 and be an effective trapfinder as long as he has enough skill points to keep the main (now cross-classed) trap skills maxed. A full Base Attack Bonus class would miss out on its (in DDO, overpowered) fourth attack though if it doesn't end with a BAB of 10, so anyone taking even one level of rogue will never get the fourth attack at the current max of level 10.
(The craptacular reversed base attack sequence is probably my biggest beef with the game, by the way.)
Missing out on rogue levels means you don't get the full action boosts for the class, but in my opinion you don't need rogue action boost if you have your skills maxed and have good gear. Rogue action boost certainly doesn't hurt, though.
I'd post more, but I'm lazy at the moment. One thing to remember is, in the world of D&D where players can multiclass all over the place, staying one class for all levels is rarely a bad thing, and it's often a great thing. This is amplified a bit in DDO due to the (once again, overpowered) enhancements.
Rogues generally aren't useless in combat, especially in DDO where last I checked they could get sneak attack damage against everything including skeletons. And all flanking means in the game is to be fighting someone while they attack someone else, so it's easy to get sneak damage. Just have to be careful if you go the melee route because with low hitpoints and often a so-so AC means you can get whacked dead in short order.
I quit cuz it just aint worth the fee but if you like it enough to pay for it here's a tad of advice that a lot of people seem to forget:
If all you want is trap disabling you only need to take your final level (possibly 2) as a rogue You will have MORE than enough points to get disable and search up to where you need them as long as you have a decent intelligence when you hit level 10. And, since you won't have a level cap locking how many points you can spend, you can spend ALL of them in just those two areas. BAM... instant high search and disable.
Now, if you want sneak, hide, sense, use magic item, etc... you better go rogue all the way.
Personally my favorite rogue build, hands down, was rogue 8, ranger 2
