Suggestions for MMORGP (UO Backround)

I know there is a topic now far from this one; read, and does not really help much.

Anyway, I have been playing UO for almost 9 years now.. I think it's time to move on as the "itch" comes more often, but lasts for only a short while these days before the 'same old' starts to kick in. I have a rather boring job, and that being the case I play allot at work on my laptop. It's not the beefiest box on the planet either: 9000IGP Radion Mobile and 512 megs of ram (128 shared ) 2.4 gig cel. Upgrading to 1gig of ram soon.

So what I'm after is:

Something that I can play on my laptop (with given specs).
Popular for both Solo and group play (mostly solo :))
Prefferably a housing system of somekind (not really a big deal) it's just that I store loads of crap.
Updated with new content frequently.
No leveling for years before content gets good
And most important a Fantasy, swords and dragons kind of game. Not really info sci-fi and whatnot.

And something that has the ability to stand the test of time. I want a game that I can play for years to come.

I'm so used to UO I really enjoy to 2D views.. 3D is cool, but not all that important to me. I've tried Everquest (bleh!) just can't get into it, Dark Age of Camolot - no thanks.. Seems OK but not really what I'm after. Age Of Conan is one I can't wait for.. Although I don't think laptop play will work. :(

I also come from a UO background, I made this post, http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/91080

It's pretty much the same as yours, and so far I'm trying out EVE Online.

Click here for the EVE free trail, the download link doesn't work so you need to go to their homepage to download the client.

While I'm not really into the whole sci-fi thing, the specs seem to be about right, and well.. After reading a bit about it I decided to give it a go. It sounds interesting I'll give it that!

EVE is the only thing out even remotely close to UO now.  1 year ago I'd have said give SWG a try but, unfortunately, SOE and LEC had other ideas and turned SWG into "just another EQ clone".

Give EVE a whirl.  Other than that there really isn't anything even remotely like UO.  I'm keeping an eye on Darkfall but no telling when (or if) that game will be released.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.
    Sig image Pending
    Still in: A couple Betas

Well I just ran through part of the tutorial on the desktop machine and I was quite impressed so far. I really just want to jump in, but I had better learn the basics first. The game seems a bit complicated. Anyway like I said so far it's working out quite well for me. I have yet to give it a go on the laptop, but I think I'll be ok, and once I get that 1gig of ram on it it should make a world of difference.

Darkfall will apparently run on 512mb of RAM.(well if the low-end screenshots speak true) As for release; the beta is HYPED (which means possibly, but not definitely) to be the end of this year, and as such is the 'ambitious target' for the developers. That's all I know.

Oh,and you beat me to the punch on mentioning Darkfall.

I'm in the same boat - UO vet looking for a new game.
I left UO behind a long time ago, but still prefer the UO god's-eye-view, 2D rendered to simulate 3D feel. Why aren't there more games like that?

I've been watching Vanguard Saga of Heros - seems to be the only worthy MMORPG up-and-coming for those with a preference for fantasy. An MMORPG made by Gamers.

Vanguard does look good; I found it last night and it really seems to be decent. That's yet another I have added to my list. Another I have been looking forward to is Age of Conan. Been a big fan of Conan for years.

I also liked the 2D top down view of UO, and really wish there where more games with that style. Graphics are nice, but not the absolute defining aspect of any game - at least for me. I still play Dragon Warrior (NES)  quite often and it's a really great example of game content over graphics.

So far Eve seems to be an interesting choice. When I get home from work in a few hours I'm going to try it on my laptop.

EVE is nothing like UO .

oh and I hear bad things about Vanguard...I know a few people testing it :( seems it's going to be the biggest grind in history of gaming.

It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

Sadly with almost every mmo game there is a grind, it makes me mad that the people who spend their lives on a game are rewarded more then the casual gamer, but yea I wouldn't go for Vangaurd.
