What was your n00b moment?

MrArchyMrArchy Member Posts: 643

We are all n00bs, in the full negative sense, at some point.  I've had several instances that, in retrospect, demonstrated I just hadn't realized what I could be doing.  My thriving business in Mabari Armorweave, just outside Eisley, for instance, where I was making quite the financial windfall selling full suits to other n00bs for 12-20k credits each.  I also distinctly remember another time when I just wanted to drop a Tusken, found one, and kept going back for a while in spite of the fact he was one-shot killing me (As a 2/2/2/2 Marksman I was convinced I was doing something stupid and that if I'd just figure it out I'd kill him - I was wrong, and he was a Tusken Executioner).

But IMHO my moment of full n00bcake fruition came when I realized that, as an aspiring Master Artisan, I could make serious XP and credit taking crafting missions in Eisley.  Those missions inevitably sent me to Anchorhead, where I could get more missions that would take me to Bestine.  In Bestine, the missions sent me back to Eisley.  Once I realized the circuit, got my shuttleport timing down, and prepped myself, I could undertake a "serious" grind of Artisan while really reaping a financial windfall.  Something like 50k creds per day.  I spent 3 or 4 days doing it for 8 hrs per day for the bank before I began to realize there may be a better way.

Later I realized it was a very slow way to grind Artisan, and 50k is nothing.  Within 2 months I was a MS/MR running solo groups on Dath, making a killing and spending a few million very casually with ease.  But I'll never forget my own n00b moment when I "discovered" the amazing opportunity to be had in the Eisley-AH-Bestine run.  SWG was my first MMO (didn't know or even care what an MMO was when I joined), I wasn't a first-day vet, and hadn't been a pre-launch Beta tester (although we are all post-launch Beta testers).

Please post your own n00b moment, no flaming please, we were all n00bs once upon a time.

My worst noob moment came , Not in SWG but in daoc a long time ago . I had just started playing and really didn't know where to go , What to do . So I decided to hit up one of the major castles for some scenery . Well I get there see the big walls the big gate , And a switch to open it . I open it walk inside to see hundreds of people around a huge teleport  (Travel to BG"S) , I also notice a lot of people exiting the gate straight ahead of me . I figure wth I'll tag along see what all this fuss is about . So I am in the back of a huge army of people . I notice instantly this area isn't where I should be . Giant beasts are everywhere . Oh well I figure , I am with a huge group beasts are no concern to me .

Well we get close to what appears to be a keep .The entire group stops , I being NOOB keep going . Only to see about 50 arrows flying at me . My first PVP experience in DAOC didn't go over very well .

Heheh I remember those crafting missions well.

I did the delivery missions my first week of play, footing it from Bestine to Wayfar. I felt so rich at the end of the week! And how upset I was because I bought a ticket to a starport instead of the cheaper shuttleport - it took a chunk out of my money stash.

The first "cantina" outside Mos Eisley on Bria was actually a large Tat house and how packed it was back then. I used to go there a lot to heal the entertainers for experience. Long gone, but I've still got the waypoint.

When I arrived at Tusken spawn (remember Observers and Witch Doctors) and decided to take them on solo. Being a buffed TKM, what could go wrong...

I remember the first time I thought 'why am I taking all these off-planet bounty missions?' during my Investigation grind.

My n00b moment happened not in SWG, but in EQ (which was the first computer game I ever played).  It was during my first week of play.  I had made it to the tree city, Kelethin, I think it was called.  A necromancer  cast an incredibly powerful buff spell called "Dead Man Floating" (which made me float).  It also made one VERY difficult to kill.

Since dark elf necromancers were supposed to be bad guys I assumed he had done something TERRIBLE to me.  So I sat floating in the tree city for 50 minutes ... until this spell that made me almost invincible wore off.  Boy was my face red!

I don’t know if this was my worst mistake, but it was by far the most embarrassing, I was trying to complete a quest on Tat, I spent 3 days, trying to complete this quest only to have one of my mates point out that I had already completed days earlier, I don’t know why I did that. Thank you for your time.

Damn byotch dat aint no friggn moon fool, dat be a friggn space station byotch.

Heh.  The first novice profession that I mastered was Artisan.  And I did it exactly how you described, except I would get bored with one planet and hop to another.

I got her another one... cost me 50 mil back in the days when 1 mil was hard to get... then, a "friend" stole it from her, and Transfered Servers... THAT's an item that should be Bio-Linkable...

My n00b moment was not using Tab targeting for the first 3 months of the game.  I manually targeted everything with my crosshairs.

I had a few but a well known one is sadly while during a Base Defense, I joined up on a major guild TS -- head out to what I thought was the right base.

Needless to say, I was overt alone standing in a empty base -- the wrong base while the entire Rebel faction knew I was in the wrong base asking where everyone was at.

    Damn base... Bah!!!

So, I was on Chilly, about two weeks of game under my belt, and I had brainstormed an idea to 'write' people's bios for them. It was a great little moneymaker. You want to be an exiled Prince from the planet Lucasfarts? No problem, I'd write up a thrilling little bio for you, e-mail it and you cut and pasted it to your character screen. 5000 creds. I was making a neat little nest egg.

Soooo, I got a customer, wrote her up, and instead of giving me money, she gave me this set of 'composite armor' that I had never seen before, (wasn't doing PvP at all at that time). Armor? What? I want my money! What am I supposed to do with this?! heh

Sold it to a guildmate for 10,000 creds and thought I'd made a killing...oy!

My noob moment (posted without reading the entire thread, will read it after I finish posting) :

I bought the collector edition of SWG on sale almost a year after the game was out.  I needed a new video card in order for the game to work so I purchased one online and waited for it to arrive.  While waiting I looked at the book and manual, planning out my first character. My first character was going to be an artisan(tailor) /entertainer bothan (had no idea about limited skill points and elite branches).  Being a fan of ewoks, I wanted to live amongst them on Endor.  After buying a few clothes in order to get out of that nasty ent noob outfit (and a landspeeder I think), I made it my goal to get to Endor as soon as I could.  As soon as I had the money for a trip TO Endor I was on my way.  I get to Endor to find there is no entertainer mission terminal.  Being noob and clueless, I even try a regular mission and get incapped just trying to get to the mission.  I did some quest from an NPC and end up with some used ticket.  I put some things on the bazaar to sell (too noob to know that someone would have to come to Endor in order to get what I put on the bazaar).  I hang out in the cantina stuck on Endor with no way of making money.  Fortunately someone came along.  When I told the person I was a noob the person replied that I must not be much of a noob to have made it to Endor.  I informed the person I was stuck on Endor.  The person was nice enough to tip me $10k.  I felt RICH.  I made it back to Tat where I belonged, used what remained of the 10k for some training and clothes I think and learned about the game (needless to say it was a while before ANY of my toons, including the combat ones, made another trip to Endor due to that experience, lol_.

First time playing a mmorpg think it was UO. After talking to someone about joining thier guild and they said "gotta go. l8r". I sat looking at my screen thinking l8r? l8r???? what is L 8 R? then I sent 4 tells to the guy saying "Uh is l8r something to do with the guild? Is it something I need to do? Where do I get one if its a weapon? What the hell is a l8r?

Being a total newb is just ugly sometimes.

My noob moment was pre-paying for six months instead of one, my GF was playing it but I pre-paid just before the NGE. After the NGE had hit an my GF had calmed down but was still going bananas I thought to myself "You NOOB!".

When I first started the game (it was my first MMO), I was in Dearic, Talus. I looked around for a couple minutes then decided to walk to the next town. Not knowing about the map or the compass, I wandered around for about an hour and a half in no particular direction. Eventually I was killed my some mob and didn't play the game again for a few days.

First day of SWG (I joined a bit late, a while after mounts and vehicals and all other neat transportation):

Well, it lagged. Lots and lots of lag. I had joined one random server, and blamed it on the fact that the server was crappy, and I joined another one, which had about the same amount of lag. Little did I know that having 256 MB of RAM was a bad Idea in this game.

But heres the fun part. I find a mission Terminal. "Fun, missions!". I spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out how to work it, got it to work, and I picked up a delivery mission. The Waypoint activated, and I saw that pretty blue arrow in the sky, and immediately followed it, oblivious to where I was going.

About an hour later, I get to the City. Wayfar, they call it. After nearly throwing my computer out the window and screaming explicitives because of the irony of the name, I complete the mission. ALRIGHT, 50 CREDITS, I"M GOING TO BE F***ING RICH!

However, I have heard of these things called Speeders, maybe I could check that bazaar thing they talked about in the Manual. I find a terminal, and proceed to buy a couple of those noob x-34's (I think, whatever the noob speeder is) oblivious to the location of them, not to mention the fact that I already have one in my datapad. Finding that I cannot pick them up from this location, more explicatives are said, and threats are made to the computer. Wait a minute.......... I can pick a speeder up!!!!!!!! One of them I randomly bought was Here! I apologize to the computer, pick it up, and spend about 30 minutes trying to figure out how to use it. By the time I do, I now realize I already had one. More yelling. I pullout one of my speeders, and drive back to Bestine. all of a sudden, out of nowhere I am completely absolutely WTFPWNED by some lizard, and my landspeeder dies as well.

    That BASTARD!!!!!!!!

I pull out my second landspeeder, and drive on the same course, planning to get revenge.

As I wake up from the cloner for a second time, I rethink my strategy, and decide to cut my losses and quit for the night.
