I want to learn the ups and downs of this game..
I read things like "I'm bored" etc.. I was totally bored in WoW before I even made it to lvl 60 and NOTHING
was worth me spending the time.. Would have been if I felt more rewarded for leveling up, like killing NEW mobs? Seeing new Instances? Etc etc.. WoW Sucks imo, and those that say Eq2 looks "plastic" ? WTH? Your just not used to Shine maps/Specular maps because wow didn't have that, nor did they have bump mapping. Plus the lazy artists at Bilzzard didn't texture ALOT of stuff correctly.. But I guess thats what happens after they get their 100k bonus. Flyff or Rose Doesn't have specular or bump either.. Try those out =)

Ok sorry I got carried away, I hate wow =)

I've played the trial version of Eq2 and I want to learn more..lvl 6 just isn't enough and it only took one night to obtain =O
So far I am getting hooked though, I came from Wow, Coh, Cov, Auto Assault, GW, Ryzom, Eve etc And every other game on the list that is 8.0 or higher.. You name it, I've played it..

I like the questing in Eq2, It draws me in and it's emmersive, But what will happen when I buy the game?

And also is there a way to buy the game and DL it from online? Or do I just purchase an account and I can leave the island?

So far on the island I don't see or hear alot of people.. A couple have tried to Duel me but thats about it..
Is this game mostly Solo????

btw, DDO trial just finished updating, I'm off to go try that now. =D

Peace and thank you

I agree with you about WoW.

EQ2 is alot busier in the afternoon than it is later in the day. You can solo all the way to the top or you can group. It's up to you. Personally, I solo because that's my personality. I don't like having to rely on other people to play the game. I'm just antisocial like that.

You can turn off the "dueling" option if you want. Just push the "p" button on your keyboard and select the last tab in the window. It will give you an option to turn off the dueling request and you can even turn off the helmet image so you can see your characters hair instead of it's hat (I like that option).

You'll love EQ2. The interface is highly customizable, the graphics are beautiful (not at all plastic like I've heard said. To me WoW is just a bunch of cartoons. Not a good thing IMO), and the game is alot of fun.

You should try the betrayal quest just once. My favorite is the betrayal from Freeport to Qeynos. Which I'm in the process of doing with my Dark Elf Necromancer right now.

    Have fun.

Thanks for the reply Moirae,  I will turn Dueling off. =]

Another thing I like about this game compared to WoW and others. The spells and moves I get early on are already cooler looking and more helpful. I don't like fighting with a Toothpick and Paper armour lol! =)

Are there any promotions I get if I buy the game or is there a way to get my first month free?

I've leveled up a few characters to the max already (on trial), I want to check out ALL of the possibilities first but
I will be done with that tonight and perhaps buy the game. But I would like to learn some more things.
Here is my list so far.

When someone builds a character in Eq2, Are they limited on the skills they get?

Or is it possible to have every skill eventually?

How big are the lands, and is it possible to explore?

I saw I can fish and harvest etc, Is this mainly how I would be making my money?

Are there Bots in this game?

And about how many people play it you think?

Last one, Can players sell things to other players that they craft/catch/harvest/kill etc?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Moirae,  I will turn Dueling off. =]

Yeah contrary to many peoples opinions, the dueling option is just annoying because it will pop up right in the middle of the screen in the middle of a battle or something because alot of players are short on brains and don't know they shouldn't be bugging you for a duel while your fighting some big bad npc.

    Another thing I like about
this game compared to WoW and others. The spells and moves I get early
on are already cooler looking and more helpful. I don't like fighting
with a Toothpick and Paper armour lol! =)

lol, have to agree with that sentiment.

Are there any promotions I get if I buy the game or is there a way to get my first month free?

I think you get the first month free if you buy the boxed version. Not sure about the digital. My boxed version had the first month free. You can find a box that includes Kingdom of Sky (expansion) and EQ2 for around $29 in the US, I think. Haven't seen that deal here in Canada though. Course, maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough lol. I dl'd my version when I signed back up because I was too lazy to go the store to buy it.

When someone builds a character in Eq2, Are they limited on the skills they get?

Or is it possible to have every skill eventually?

Skills as in what way? You're limited by your character type and what's available based on that character type. As you level, you automatically gain new abilities. You can pick and choose which ones you want to use, of course. But that's as far as picking your skills goes in this game. It's level based, not skill based.

How big are the lands, and is it possible to explore?

    HUGE
Seriously, they're so big, you won't believe it. And they add new content constantly. In the time it's been released, they are soon releasing their third expansion pack (which I'm impatiently waiting for), and the third adventure pack. There's so many places to go and so much to see, I don't think you could ever do it all. And they keep making it even bigger with more content.

Have fun exploring. I know I do. It's part of the very cool part of the game. Now, mind you, it isn't as big as Star Wars: Galaxies. But it's still huge.

I saw I can fish and harvest etc, Is this mainly how I would be making my money?

It's up to you. You don't HAVE to craft if you don't want to. You'll get plenty of loot
and coin from the monsters you kill and from the quests you do. I like to craft because it gives me a break from monster killing all the time and I really really dislike PvP.

Are there Bots in this game?

Well, I imagine there are. It's almost impossible to stop hackers from taking advantage of a game if they can. But I don't think it's nearly as rampant as what you'll find on WoW. There aren't any mods like in WoW though. In fact, I think it's not generally legal to make mods for this game. The devs don't exactly like it any more than bots.

And about how many people play it you think?

Whew, you don't ask hard questions do you? lol. I honestly don't know. But Everquest has been one of the biggest names in the MMO industry for a very long time so I imagine there's alot. Though alot of people are still loyal to the first Everquest so I don't think you'll find as many people here. A good thing in my opinion. But then, I'm a bit antisocial like I said. :) I spend much more time playing by myself than I do playing in groups. And I've never once managed to level a character to the max level either.

Last one, Can players sell things to other players that they craft/catch/harvest/kill etc?

Most definately. Though some things are "bind on pickup", most things you can sell to other players. You can't sell raw harvests to the vendors though (like "raw tin") which are unrefined and unfinished products but just items straight out of the ground where you got them from.

Word of advice though, use your apartment. You get one when you first enter the mainland from the isle. Just click on the door. The initial cost is nothing (you can buy ones for higher cost that are much cooler later on) and only 5 silver a week thereafter. The reason I say that is that you will then get a marketboard that you can sell things from your own home (keep in mind they did an update recently that means you're going to need to put "bags" into the house slots, but then you can sell alot more from a house while you're offline so you don't have to be logged in).

If you belong to a guild, depending on the guild level, you can even buy your own "creation devices" to make your items in your home rather than having to enter a trade instance to do it. So, you a smith? Buy your own forge. Etc.

Forget direct2drive.com. Download it directly from the company itself. That's what I did. Just sign in under your "trial everquest" name.

Hey thanks for replies guys =)

Btw I think I downloaded DDO for nothing, I open it and go to log in and then I say "Nah, I'll go play Eq2 instead."
lol.. I'm already addicted. I've leveled up a couple Melee characters. 3 so far, and I've tried out a Conjurour.
The conjurour seems fun but I felt a little less powerful soloing. What do you recommend for Soloing?

Today I'm going to try out an assasin, and more magic characters. But like most games I've played you can't really judge a character type until later on in the game.. For instance, the Druids in WoW pretty much suck until you get all the shape shifting stuff. So if you can enlighten me on which would be the best later on that would help.

This Direct2Drive.com thing, do they offer any special 1 month free promotions like the the boxed version?
    Or does the sony station?

Also is there a place I can find out about the servers, like where each one is located how populated each one is?
where do you guys live and what servers do you play on?

    Thanks you two =)

Hey I just noticed something... Check out this site.. http://www.trialoftheisle.com/info.vm?Char_Id=103472307

If I read this correctly Direct2drive will give me a free 30 days?? As well as buying in a store?
I'd hate to Download and buy it just to find out for myself. If anyone has experience in this please let me know.

Btw, I just tried Coercer and that didn't work out for me.. Was very tough to solo even if I Befriend an Npc that is my level I can't take on two at a time. Only got to level 3 with it.
So I need some good input here.. Going to try the Assasin right now.

KK see how this guy talks?  These are the type of people flocking to eq2, word got out it was idiot proof now so they came a runnin.  I dont blame SOE for catoring thier game to these people, they got money and there are more of them.

Enjoy 60' and 70's chat when yall get there =)  This guy will be there with the others saying this same kinda stuff, its so WoW which was so last big MMO lol.

Well, I find Palladin's are great for soloing. You get the healing and the melee and you get to wear cool armor and have cool weapons. Pally's are for Qeynos, Shadowknights are Freeport. They're about the same things though, just Pally's are good and knights are bad morally (so you get the change in ability to reflect that).

I'm currently finishing my betrayal quest Freeport to Qeynos. Have they ever changed it massively. I'm not scared to walk through Nektulos anymore. Wow.

No place for you to find out about the servers that I know of. If you create a character and take it almost to the end, you can see how busy the servers are. I've noticed they tend to all have at least a medium population at almost all times. Some times of day are busier than others. I personally play Mistmoore and I'm perfectly happy there. I live in Canada, btw.

I think they have North American and European servers and the ones that appear on your list depend on what continent you're from. But don't quote me on that because I could be wrong.

I can honestly say that I've never played a character all the way to the top level. But, so far, Palladins are my favorite. I'm having quite alot of fun with my Necro too. Can't wait to see what she turns into. It's hilarious to watch all the guards litterally go on their guard as I walk by. And the shop keepers that ask you to leave when they notice that you're from Freeport.

I love the pets thing. Pet can tank while you nuke from afar. Pet also takes aggro.

Not a clue about the direct2drive thing.

it's really all about your style of play. I like to solo so I don't generally play healer type characters since you pretty much NEED to group. I don't play magical much either but the rogue and warrior types work for me. I like the "scoundrel" and the "noble" types.

Not a problem answering your questions. Happy to help.

Oh and I sent you a private message on this forum.

Lets not get off track here..

Tell me what a good Soloing Character is for later on in the game?
And help me figure out if that site I posted will give me a free month to decide once I join.

And BTW, to those who care, I tried an Assasin tonight.. And wow! Was that awsome!

First heres what I like about Assasin so far..

#1) I can sneak past anyone without being seen! This helped in alot of my quests, mainly the one where I have to kill the guy up in his tree house. Only had to fight the 3 up there.

#2) I was able to Solo ALL of the quests on the noob island.

#3) Part of #2, I could deal alot of damage.

#4) There are moves/attacks I could do which will bring me back into stealth mode so I can do another quick 'stealth only' attack, Very cool!

So tell me if Assasins get more powerful compared to others later on, or less powerful.

Also, I'm learning that this game doesn't have much chatting at all!! Is this just because I'm on the isle?
I enjoy reading people chatting in a general chat while I solo, it's entertainment.. But so far I feel as though I'm
not even in an MMO. So someone tell me there is more chatty players on the main game before I buy, which I want to do right now, so hurry up and reply! lol..

    Thanks!

edit: Woops! I posted I guess as you were posting.. I will read your PM..

The Direct2Drive version does include the first 30 days free.  However, if you're able to get it retail, you can get the Kingdom of Sky expansion which includes the full original game as well as the 30 days for $29.

  • j0nij0ni Member Posts: 36
Moirae, Just tried that server and it's too laggy.. The mob will attack me for 3 hits after I've killed them..

Patri0tz - I've heard word of this, As I understand it the upgrades will allow someone to get to lvl 70?
What happens if I buy the game from Direct2Drive, will I have to buy another expansion later?

    Thanks

(EDIT) Never mind, I'm already downloading the game lol!! I just purchased it from Direct2Drive.
And here is my qoute of the night "Nothing can stop me now, cause I Don't care anymore".. -Trent Reznor.

=P Rad! I'm gonna see the City of Freeport in.. uh.. crap 2 hours.. =( I'm probably going to pass out on my keyboard waiting for it.. Wonder if I can play some solitaire while it downloads, or maybe minesweeper..

(edit 2) _ hehe sorry I'm bored.. I think I will take my Assasin over first, so far that was the most fun to play. Plus I like stabbing people in the back.  But Moirae, I did enjoy Paladin as I could be a tank and heal myself and had some ranged magic......  ok....., back to watching the dl bars =)

[edit 3] Damn! ok I will only edit this one more time.. Btw, I learned how to craft today prior to playing the paladin. And it is pretty cool! I made some Sushi that heals me faster.. And I love how I can fish in this game and do little detailed things..... it's the details that make a game good!!! Only gripe is that my Sushi rolls sell for
cheaper then what I paid to make them.. But I'm sure if I make armour and stuff, and sell it to players this wont be the case. Or if I learn what I am doing and can find the material needed lol!. Ok, ok.. I promise I wont edit this post again! =)

lol. Sounds like you had fun last night.

EQ2 can be laggy depending on your computer stats and how often you've zoned. My computer is brand new and I just added a Geforce 7600 GT to the mix and it seems able to handle that just fine. Unless I've been zoning alot. After a while, it gets bogged down and starts going slow. It doesn't have much to do with the servers, but more to do with your computer.

As for crafting, it's always a better idea to sell to players than it is to sell to the vendors. make liberal use of the "offline" selling.

Oh and before I forget, the chatting thing, people tend to stay quiet in the ooc. Unless you're in a guild. Then it scrolls constantly. My guild "Faith of Heroes" is currently recruiting those of all levels. There's currently almost 1500 members and it's a level 28 guild. They talk constantly. So much that I've almost thought about shutting off the guild chat. lol. You might consider talking to them and see what the guild leaders say about you joining.

I also just started playing EQ2 about a week ago on the Mistmoore server as a Wood Elf Fury. I'm also a former WoW player (played a lot of other MMO's too) and found this game to be more complex than WoW so far, especially the crafting. It's much more fun although it takes time to get the hang of it, especially if you are going to craft pristine items.     As far as guilds go, open up the icon list on the left side of the screen and choose guild. You will see a lot of guilds who are recruiting. You can skim each guild's icons to see what they are seeking. Really cool feature that is lacking in WoW.

Yeah that is lacking in WoW but you know what is the worst? The lack of a flipping LFG menu! God I hated WoW for that alone. I guess if they don't expect people to group they don't need it but at 60 you really could use one.

There is a mod that does it for WoW but need others to use it... I think they said over a year ago after the 2nd meeting stones flopped they were working on a new LFG system now they are telling us it won't be till BC.

edit: sorry for the OT items, it just really burned me about WoW not having a LFG system =)

Someone invited me to that guild yesterday. Never talked to me at all. That makes me wonder the type of riff-raff that enters the guild. I'd much rather look for a guild myself and go through an interview process. Plus 1500 members is a lot. I bet the amount of active members is at least 1/3 of that. Still I would think it would be hard to feel like a family in a guild that large.

Celestian : Yes the LFG option had a part in me buying it last night.. I realized I could set it to search
not just in my region and I saw a huge list of players =)

Alekhin : The crafting is awsome in this game. The only thing is that (So far) I will craft something spending about
20 copper, and when It's done I can only sell to NPC for about 9 copper. But I will assume the better objects I will learn to craft, people will actually want and I can make profit.

Moirae : LoL I drank so much caffine last night, but I crashed really hard. Fell asleep in my computer chair. I woke up to work calling me and then went back to bed lol!  I'm about to set sail to Freeport.
About the lagging issue. On Mistmoore server I would kill a mob, and while I'm running to the next my character will be hit 3 more times. I will stop and look around like "Hey, who's hitting me?"  But after the 10th time I realized it was just lag, so I ignored it. But then something was actually hitting me, and followed me to the next mob, so I had 3 mobs on me at once.. I really wish there was a way to find out where the servers are located.
Are they all in the US?

Ok I'm going to actually go to Freeport right now! Woo!

dont blame yah, corcers are horrible...honestly im not 100% sure about your D2D questions. If one of them would have the 30 free days id suspect the SOE one to have it. I had a website actually that showed me the server pop and stuff i'll need to get back to you on that one.

I'll stick to answering the OP.

I agree with the bit about WoW, but I made it to 60 a few times before throwing in the towel... can't say that I have any reason to go back. I recently gave EQ2 a try with all the expansions and 3 months of gameplay, I'm not enticed or even slightly amused by how the whole things works... it's just WoW with better graphics and a less-than-helpful community (but thankfully not childish... just selfish and annoying).

Instead of the world being entirely too small (like WoW), the world is too big without a mount of sorts, and you'll spend most of your solo-time just wandering about looking for things to kill.

Basically, I quit when I got my first monk character to 20 from soloing and a few groups... it just isn't any better than Warcrap (grindfest to the end, and no reward). Also, I was disenchanted with the new crafting system (implemented two days after I joined), which turned the complex and tedious system into a mindless "click n wait" similar to a world of wars and crafts.

EQ2 is now just a bigger version of WoW with less immersion and a smaller community. You should seriously reconsider playing this game, in my opinion, but if it strikes your fancy, keep at it. I'm burnt out on MMORPGs for now, as they all seem to want to emulate the latest illusion of success.

You know what? I am horribly sad to say this.. I have just cancelled my account.. I think I threw 19 bucks down the drain.. Hopefully they don't charge me for a months time..

lol.. I could go on and on about this, but instead I will just make some notes about what not to do in a MMO.
BTW, MMO stands for "MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE" not "Single player online" And yes, I Joined a guild, I finally grouped at level 11, and I just followed that person around collecting things not even having time to read all the BS. This game is a single player game with an instant messanger inside a poorly written graphics engine. 120fps to 12fps in one second.??

Sorry, I'm just pissed off I haven't found a good mmo yet.

You used to be able to make a small profit on each item provided you didn’t spend to much on the rare but that created a proliferation of tradeskill bots making money for the plat sellers.  Now, all an NPC gives you for an item is the cost of the fuel to make it, so you have to make things other players need to make a profit.  Very soon they will reintroduce tradeskill writs which will allow you to make a profit if you complete the writ within the time limit.

I’m sorry to hear that.  Finding friends who share similar interests that you can play with is the key to making any MMO fun, and I certainly wouldn’t want to follow someone around while they farm collectables.

If you still have time left on your account I’d suggest you give it a bit more time.  Grouping tends to pick up a little in the teens for blackburrow and more again for Stormhold around level 20.

It sounds like your guild doesn’t have active players around your level perhaps you should simply explain the situation to the guild leader and look for one that is more active in your level range.  One of the reasons I don’t offer up my own guild to new players looking for one here is that we are a small but mostly high level guild.  While we would love to have new, friendly members we just don’t have a many people in the lower level ranges to offer new players a good experience.

(If we can generate enough interest perhaps it would be worthwhile for people from this site to role an alt and start up a new entry level guild so people trying EQ2 for the first time go to one place and hopefully have more newish players to experience the game with?)
