MMORPG Diaspora?

I don't know how other people feel about this but I have a sense that ever since World of Warcraft was released, and after the initial very positive interest (I know, for example, that lots of people from DAoC left to play WoW); followed in quick succession by the release of an initially popular Lineage 2 there has occurred something of a MMORPG Diaspora. By this I mean that ardent MMORPG fans have been flitting and floating back and forth between different games and never really settled in one place. The number of people who have re-registered with old favourites and then shortly afterwards left again might also be indicative of this.

Perhaps this tells us something of the "state of the art" with MMORPGs right now? The fact that DAoC, which was a fantastic early product (especially the RvR aspect, as most people note) is still currently third most popular, with new games hitting the charts for a few weeks until the initial impact wears off (Auto Assault is a good example), might also indicate something about the quality of what's out there.

Personally, I reckon that there is a sizeable body of "hard core" players who are waiting for that very special MMORPG to happen? This leads to the inevitable hype about WarHammer, Age of Conran, Aion, Chronicles of Spellborn, Heroes and Gods etc etc. Some of you may remember the incredible hype around Dark & Light - and what an Emperors New Clothes that turned out to be. So to cut to the chase. For one, I am waiting in great anticipation for something really special to hit the MMORPG scene. I wonder if there is anything that can ever have the impact that the likes of WoW had; also whether, the novelty of the Eve Online genre will have worn off, and if DAoC will still be in the charts in six months timer? Will the MMORPG Disapora re-convene around something with rare depth and quality to have a lasting shelf life?

I hear ya and agree 100% and having tried my fair share of mmo's I really hope they evolve for the better because the bug infested level based linear gameplay needs to go. I also want a mmo that the grind doesnt apply to because that also tires some players and drive them back to games like FPS's or RTS's. Something new and imersive where you get attached to your toon like I was in SWG (pre-NGE) but its so tough to make a game for everyone I iwll admit that.

Most important since MMO's always evolve the devs must have an idea of where they want to go, look at SOE a huge company and wtf kinda direction did they show with SWG a mmo that if made properly could have easily toped WOW but SOE made it into a POS and never fixed it properly.

Good thing that might happen from the SOE/SWG mess is that other companies or maby even SOE gets their head out of ass and wakes up to realize giving us what we want and having less complaints means more money and good word of mouth.

I got high hopes for Age of Conan,Tabula Rasa and Star Trek online, I also think the golden age of mmo's is yet to come.

    {(RIP)} SWG
