SoE and blizzard war.

Why is SOE against blizzard so bad? They are the only company to bash blizzard with advertizements, not once but TWICE. BLizzard did get back at them with the funny panda express thing. Yet why does SOE think they can go up against blizzard of all companys?

All of  SOES games combined wouldnt even match a half of blizzards Subs. I know subscription numbers dont = quality but for a game that doesnt have a expansion or much content additions for 2 years to still hold 6.5 million subs and more they have to be doing something magical. An dont let them release a world of starcraft, blizzard would litterally own the mmo franchize.

Not to derail the argument but I was just wondering, these 6.5 million subscriptions, are they the total amount of subscriptions WoW ever had or are those 6.5 million current (active/paying) subscriptions?

It's simple, SOE is jealous of Blizzard's success.

Sorry but this quote taken from http://www.mmorpgchart.com/Analysis.html  makes me question the integrity of that data.

Firstly, I rely on the companies and employees themselves to provide the bulk of the data.  The numbers they give could be completely made up, and as Enron taught us, even financial reports could be misleading.  However, given that none of claims seem highly outrageous, and that all companies are equally capable of lying, it would seem that the numbers given are pretty close to the truth.  There is probably some minor fudging involved when a company wants to claim a major milestone, rounding up to the nearest 5K or 10K increment.  But at the very least, the relative comparison between MMOGs is retained, even if individual data points may be off 10% or more.

Secondly, there’s no universal consensus on what constitutes an active subscriber.  Some companies may count players currently on their traditional first “free month” as a current subscriber, whereas others might not start counting them until after that period and the customer actually chooses to subscribe.  Although the accounts that don’t subscribe get “subtracted’ a month later, such accounting could create a continuous effect of inflating the overall subscription total.  Most MMOGs probably do this, but some may not, and this may make them appear slightly larger than they actually are.  Still, after the initial launch of a game or an expansion, the actual monthly effect of such accounts should be relatively minor… perhaps on the order of 10%.

Finally, a “subscriber” is generally counted as an individually numbered account currently in a company’s billing system.  In some instances, one person may maintain multiple accounts, and thus be double or even triple-counted.  Some MMOGs may even encourage this behavior more than others.  There isn’t much I can do about this fact; again, the effect is probably minor compared to the overall population of a given MMOG, and in any case it’s certainly valid to count such multiple subscriptions if your goal is to evaluate the relative market share of each MMOG.

Yes, those 6.5 million subscribers are active/paying subscribers.

to the op: well, SOE was punched in the face when World of Warcraft was released. most people downright ignored Everquest 2 and went for Worlld of Warcraft. they have the same target audience.

They are current active accounts. Blizzard has stated this.

No, I'm not going to look it up.

That's it in a nutshell. SOE has never been able to accept blame for anything even when its smack dab in their face. We all know SOE has pretty much destroyed or severely damaged several games. They know we know it. Yet they still continue trying to blame everyone but themselves. The day they admit they messed up SWG bad and prove through time of showing a true attempt to fix the game, I will never put another SOE game on this computer.

How are they blaming Blizzard with that ad?  The ad also has nothing to do with SWG, it's an Everquest vs WoW thing.

and this quote is taken from the same place, the WoW section. maybe next time read the whole thing before posting inaccuracies yes? :D

World of Warcraft (Accuracy Rating: A)

Launched on November 12, 2004, Blizzard’s entry into the MMOG market has been a runaway phenomenon, outpacing all expectations.   As stated in Blizzard’s latest press release, “World of Warcraft customers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or purchased a prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the installation box bundled with one free month access.  Internet Game Room players that have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as customers.  The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired pre-paid cards.  Customers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.”   According to this definition, as of June 2006, WoW has reached 6.6 million subscribers worldwide, including over 1 million in Europe and somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million in North America, with most of the remainder in China.

About the original topic: it is clear why SoE goes to "war" against blizzard. they both have very succesful mainstream games and at the moment those are about the only one with that kind of focus (mostly pve and raiding).

So, clearly SoE wants some of those 6.6 mils customers to get to EQ or EQ2 and wants to be witty about it. We'll see how succesful they are :D

Well look at it this way!

Blizzard is strictly a gaming company! Blizzard has been within the top 5 gaming companies for at least 10 years!

Long before EQ even existed Blizzard had a very good name for itself. It was considered a flawless gaming company. They have never put out a bad product.

Games by Blizzard! 1993 Warcraft<Game of the Year > back then it was big. Best RTS for the time!

Warcraft II <late 1994-95> Game of the Year,Best RTS,Won numerous gamers awards. Still a good game to play to this date! For a while it was impossible to find this game on a game shelf!

Diablo <1995-96> Game of the Year again!

Starcraft<1997-2000> Game of the Year 2x, Best RTS The scifi version of WCII. My favorite RTS of all time! ZERG FTW!! Numerous Awards, Hall of Fame RTS along side WCII and C&C..

Diablo II <1998-2002> Game of the Year2x, numerous Awards!!

World of Warcraft<2003-current> The God of mmorpgs. Blizzard did it again. When the game first came out it had surpassed any mmorpg to date in subscibers within the first week! Game of The Year, numerous TV time. Awards, Hall of Fame game! set the standard for mmorpgs.

As you notice, every game Blizzard has ever made has been top notch a cut above the rest! Why doesnt SOE like it? Because Blizzard de-throned the current mmorpg KING in less than a week!

So you know im not a WOW fanboi, havent played WOW in a few months! But I do know Blizzard has always been one of the very few top notch gaming companies around!

We were talking about SOE versus Blizzard. Everything SOE has touched lately has turned to garbage. EQ2 gets a new patch and they lose half their customers. Planetside gets a new expansion and they lose half their customers. SWG gets a whole new rewrite and they lose half their customers.

This just screams of bad decision making. They have lost any connection they had with the gamer world. Blizzard, on the other hand, knows exactly what is needed to make the labrat hit the pedal.

SOE has always been about blaming others for their own mistakes. I tried coming back to SWG. Then the whole Restuss fiasco happened. Did SOE step up and say it was their fault? No they blamed everyone else. Even thier community. "Oh its your computers not us. The event works fine. If everyone had $20k machines with T3 connections it would have been perfect. But since you dont its your fault." I checked right out after that.

If they would just say "Hey it was our fault. We lost touch with the community and made some bad decisions. Please help us get on the right track." Then things would have been far different.

It might be a war in SOE's eyes. But to Blizzard, they're just a gnat.
