I never bought it because it just didn't have the amount of hype I would have expected it to have before it launched. Seemed a bad sign to me. The fact that SoE has it further entrenches my belief that it's not worthwhile.
But I'm still curious what this game is all about? I mean, pre-launch it seemed like they were portraying this game out to be just some virtual city where the goal was to get as many different outfits as possible. Virtual shopping just doesn't sound neat to me.
Is that essentialily what this game's purpose/great achievement is? To get new duds?

There are / were cinematics, and there was a Live Events team, people paid to portray characters from the movies in game to go with the storyline. This was the most immersive thing about the game, my character was fairly popular and involved in the main storyline on the server I was on, and I got to experience a lot of these cool things personally. It felt like nothing else. The potential missed here is truly depressing.
What its about now? Not much really. There is a still somewhat healthy community of Role Players around, but this, like many other things takes place mostly around Mara Central (which is a hardline in the game) its basically where all the newbies start out, but aside from leveling / content, everyone congregates there. So like 99% of the server will be at this one point the entire time, marginalizing the rest of the large world.
Mostly what goes on here is a lot of e-peen flexing -- basically PVPing and shit talking each other. SOE took it off WB's hands and is basically funding it just enough for it to float around, theyre exhausting the progressive storyline content and cinematics (which were written and created a year ahead of time) with just about every patch, milking whatever they have left to give. After all that runs out I wouldnt expect any new development as it seems quite obvious their budgets are quite tight.
As you said there wasnt enough hype, the marketing for the game was horrible, I guess WB didn't take their investment seriously. Prior to getting involved in beta I felt extremely starved for information, we all know that many MMOs in development keep a lot of cards to their chest, but not THAT close. There just wasn't enough marketing.
Anyways, word of mouth due to the brand name turned many people off to an otherwise pretty nice game. I think it was the long open beta that may have killed it as well (much of the content was the progressive storyline, since this was held back for retail as not to ruin the storyline, all we basically had were the equivilant of City of Villains newspaper missions, and some admittingly somewhat boring neighborhood missions)
You can pick up the game for like 7$ on Amazon, so if you're that curious, I suggest you pick it up and give it a shot. You'll get the game and 30 days free with the purchase so its a pretty good value.
P.S. I don't play anymore, I haven't in quite a long time. I dealt with the shortcomings in beta figuring it would sell well and they were just bugs and imbalances that any MMO had in beta, that would get ironed out later on. I think much of this did happen after launch, even with the SOE acquisition, things are more balanced now, but I know from a business standpoint MXO is just floating along and wont ever meet its potential. I knew there was no point in holding on for that, so I left.
Just so people know Live story progression still happens, perhaps even on a more regular scale than with WB. Yes, we don't have massive giga events every month or so but we do have nigh dayly events, some big, some small, but all with some nice RPin, story and action. Every once in a while you'll even get the odd quirky one.
And theres still the regular critical storyline missions. And cinematics.
Also, Mara C is no longer the hardline. Sure, its the main one for PvP (although thursdays patch hopes to change that) but each server has at least 2/3 main hubs of players now.
I know they still try to do the events and all that but its not nearly the scale of what it used to be. They just reuse a lot of things. I doubt you'll be seeing interetsting things like that Blackhawk Helicopter that used to fly around at that one point in the storyline. Right now they just push the content out with every patch, basically just milking it out.
Blackhawks are still there. And theres been a lot of variable storyline related world changes since then too. Cryptos boxes, Morrel helipad, hostile spawns in certain areas (this chapter involved crazy cheat code weilding mofos spawning all round downtown, heck, just hunting them down was cool in its own right and gave the lesig a lot of material to work with)
Leading on from that, i was in an even a couple of weeks back where an unlimit general (played by one of the devs, so this is a real living breathign character not just another npc) lead his forces (unlimit spawns) into certain areas around the city (the spawns were positioned at key points around both around the city and inside these 2 big buildings). We had to fight off the city lot while raiding these two buildings. It was truely awesome, the players made organised teams to handle each spawn point whiel others strategicly layed seige the bases (fighting our past perimeter guards, spearheading past door guards and securing the first floor lobby then making our way up to roof)
To sum up, scale (and as a by-product event overcrowding and lag) is down while frequency and fun is up.
Terrible aint it?
k thx. I checked out the best buy and gamestop website. It dint show it listed. Do you know why that is?
What ya mean use the 30 days free?
Well many of the games had be recalled since all the legal stuff on em was invalidated with the SOE acquisition so its doubtful they'll be listed on their onlines stores. Probably better to go check em out in person, look on the shelves, check second hand, that sorta thing.
And i mean the 30 days free you get with any boxed version (and maybe D2D but im not sure) of the game.
Well, like i said, because the legal information is out of date, its about £5-£10
Dunno about USA though, but still, pretty darn cheap.
Ok. I'll come on syntax. Make sure you check in with mmorpg.com soon and I'll post my char name on here.
I called Gamestop AND Best Buy. Gamestop said they didn't carry it anymore, and Best Buy said they don't have it.
Well the game software is a free download from here.
Then all ya gotta do is figure out how your gonna get playing. Be it from a $15 subscription for a month, a SOE gamecard from your local store or trying to hunt down a trial key for a free 10 days.
Nope, just download the game from that link and set up an account.
