Age of Conan, the new destination for "hardcore" PvPers

hadzhadz Member Posts: 712

OK, there's been a lot of "carebears" win and/or "hardcore PvPers" have nowhere to go posts recently...

I don't consider myself either (though I really dislike many of the attitudes hardcore PvPers display). But I think there is a game coming out that may cater to the hardcore's needs.

Age of Conan. If you read their latest article (on the news site) about "Blood Money" and PvP you'll see that this is going to be one MESSY bunch of FFA PvP (at least in a large section of the game)...BUT!! and note this near the end of the article. They're talking about servers that will provide more FFA PvP in all areas. (They do say that this will be based on popularity as to how many servers of that type are made...so I guess we'll finally get a chance to judge how many hardcorers there really are out there)

This fact, combined with the possibly more hand-eye-coordination-combat (read "more skilled-combat" there, if you like, as opposed to number-crunch-combat in many MMOs) could make this the new MMORPG of choice for the hardcore. And...funnily enough...even I'm looking forward to it. (And I've been called carebear more times than I can count on here)

That depends on who you call hardcore, if you mean the PKers/gankers it still wont satisfy them. Spawn camping is impossible, looting anything other than the blood money is out. And killing someone in a fashion that can definately be identified as ganking will earn you a bounty hunter NPC squad on your arse, and my personal KOS list if I find out about it, although that last is not much for them to worry about in the end.

Now if you are reffering to those who love the challenge and the thrill of taking on an intelligent opponent who might very well take your head instead of the other way around... absolutely, the truly massive pvp battles are something to be desired.

Expect the development team to cave before launch and turn it into a skinned WoW clone.

I tried to start a thread that talked about a new game which may cater to the more hardcore PvPers amongst us...and THIS is all I get??? Yet the trash-talking, mud-slinging, trollbait posts get 10s of responses.

To me, this just proves that all the so-called "hardcore PvPers", on here, want to do is whine!

Bunch of whining babies who can't hack that people can't be bothered with their crap in OUR games anymore...

I'm playing Age of Conan just because it's going to be a lot of fun.  I can actually *GASP + DEEP BREATH!!!* over look the first 20 levels because I know, once you finish it, you'll never have to do it again.  Even with a new character.

Also playing for "blood money" seems pretty neat.  Yeah we all know there's going to be a few guilds stronger then some others, but in what game hasn't there been a few guilds everyone cries about and thinks they are filled with "carebears".

First let me say that I personally feel the entire carebear/FFA/PvP vs PvE is irrelevent. It all depends on personal taste and playstyle. Either you like one or the other or you don't. There is nothing wrong with either.

I don't concerder myself any of the types. (I concider myself an MMORPG fan) I can just as easily enjoy WoW as Lineage 2 or Guild Wars. I see the merits and flaws of each game. I don't make some pre-judgment based on whether or not it is PvP or PvE based. A lot of players don't like WoW's PvP. I have no problem with it. Jump in blast around, jump out. Its a simpler version of BattleField 2 with cartoons to me, its fun to play in a light hearted way. Whats wrong with that??? I can get into PvP in L2. Its much darker and much more risky. You have alot to loose in L2 by picking a fight and losing, there are consequense of action in L2 that most games don't have. I can also play PvE and enjoy it.

I like doing the missions/quest and raids in most games. I like a well designed quest or dungeon as much as anyone else. I don't like how they most are executed lately with the idiot proof kill task being the main staple of MMO's but oh well, I'm no designer and I don't have 20 million to sink into a game lol.

Each game brings something different to the table. You need to concider each one on its own merits.

Overall, I think MMO's are very poor and unbalanced with it comes to PvP. They are to stat / math dependent. That is why FFA PvP will never work out as currently designed. As long as one guy can outright kill another simply because he is a higher level and no skill related reasons and benefit from it, people will for the most-part dislike it as demonstrated by roughly 10 years of market history. If a max level character can out right kill the lowest level character and suffer no consequences, it has no point.

Conan sounds like it will be fun, and thats what games should be...fun and challenging. I'll give it a go when it releases.

AoC is level based and it has classes... im sorry but a game that has those cant have a good, hardcore pvp. It will turn into nerf this, nerf that riot. If you want duels and such, then this game might wtfpwn but for a true FFA pvp it will not work (gankers will love it tho). FFA pvp needs a skill based system.

Nah, skill-based systems are FAR FAR harder to balance than class-based.

What devs need to learn is to IGNORE THE NERF callers. (GW did this well for a while, but are now starting to fall for it...of course, GW's nerfs are mainly anti-farming, which isn't a bad thing. Not a lot of PvP nerfs)

no levels , no classes , skill based..  thats like pre trammel UO...

Age of conan has instanced pvp , and classes and levels .

plus Funcom doesnt exactly have the greatest track record of makin bug free games and its dev's run around makin posts on competitors forums thinking their hot shit..  the post about that is still at the official funcom boards where a funcom rep confirmed it actually happened.  hahh

Yes, that does look much more hardcore (judging by the FAQ)...

But judging by history (of this type of game) it will no doubt fail dismally.

(Particularly, if it's true what I read at TenTonHammer, if it's an incarnation of Mourning ::::10::)

Well I'm not to "up" on Conan, but it says its in the border kingdoms and you need to pay to get in.

When you first enter the Border Kingdoms the coin that would be used to pay for that passage is not taken away, but is converted into Blood Coin. Blood Coins is effectively a separate currency to your normal coin.

So its not true FFA. (which is fine because FFA in its current design form, doesn't work anyway) You make the decission to go there and do this. Nothing is "forced". At least how I read it. It sounds like a PvP zone/area/map/kingdom. Am I incorrect?

Yeah, level with stats will never really work in PvP UNLESS you are only allowed to fight your mathmatical peers. Until systems contain PvP to take the math into consideration, the practice of "ganking" will continue to tarnish the idea of PvP.

Class have less impact then level as they provide a specific role. This is normal in most PvP centered games like shooters. (Battlefield 2 for example) everyone can't do everything. You could do skill based but then you really do loose control as it opens up a far greater combination of balancing with skills and abilities. Everyone will end up a fighter/tank/damage dealer/mage/nuker/rooter/ranged/healer/stealther or any wierd combination that the devs overlooked - didn't address - didn't get to before release, so now they need to do something about it and drive the player base nuts.

it could fail..  but I have a gut feeling its not going too. they've been showin some good stuff continuously on a professional quality level.    if it does succeed there wont be a better true pvp mmog in 2007.

maybe Archlord.. dunno  But I dont like that payment thing they have going for archlord. Everyone will pay to be the best. Ruins the whole gameplay.

lol, Mourning... biggest joke in the history of MMORPGs. Their code is complete crap, cant hold more than 10 ppl in server without crashing. Hardcore indeed

LOL why would someone think because there is no spawn camping ala AC darktide, the game will be no fun for hardcore griefers ? You know why they spawn camped ? Because they simply could.  You also seem to confuse griefers and hardcore pvpers. While a griefer can be a hardcore pvper, the 2 terms are not exclusive to eachother. Hardcore pvpers just want a mmorpg where they can fight whoever they want, they might not be out there necessarily to piss people off. They just want a good environment that doesn't block them with ingame restrictions at every turn.

Griefers on the other hand don't need a special game made for them, they exist in every game.  Those would inclue ninja looters to some degree, scammers, spawn campers, newbie killers, and anything under the sun that will make them smile and you cry.
