Went to their website DDO.com.
Sent me a free 7 daay trial key.
Registered it for billing on the codemasters site.
Downloaded like 2 gigs for the client and patches.
Login page - enter username and pw. Result "INVALID"
Hmm seems i need to create a SECOND account, this time with Turbine.
Ok... Turbine link, I click on the "activate 7 day trial key".
Result. "KEY INVALID"
Huh ? but thats the key they sent me ?
Scanning through the FAQ... suddenly I read (after a long search) "...key valid in US, Canada and Mexico"
WHAT ??
You let me download 2 gigs from a EUROPEAN server, let me create a billing account with a EUROPEAN address (I had to enter it for making the account), send me a trial key with NO HINT THAT ITS NOT WORKING FOR
ME ??
Even on the website when you start the whole process it reads "CHOOSE YOUR REGION US/EUROPE" - how much more misleading can that be if there are only keys for the US ?
And to top it i would need to re-install the whole game after the trial just to play it in hi-res...
You guys wonder why you dont have any subscribers ? here is a potential one you just lost forever.
Comments
get the trial from there
couldn't be that hard to figure that out.
Same thing happened to me. I don't like complications like that. AT ALL. If you want me to try your game get your shit together. Free trial or not. I did everything just like you and got the same crap. Now I'll avoid that game like the plague... FOREVER.
But the reality is that, it is in the interest of Turbine to make it more easy for potential new customers. (And they need them quite a few)
A re-direct link to the European website for European IPs, won't costs too much to implement.
Another chapter of Turbine saga: "How to make your customers mad at you because we can't be arsed"
"the european site is www.ddo-europe.com"
...ok, why no redirect there for europen IPs ? ddo.com is certainly the first URL that comes to mind.
Where is ANY type of information Im using a "wrong" trial key - not even in the mail I get sent with it. A simple "only valid for USA, Canada and Mexico residents" at some point would have been enough.
Not even a feedback when trying to use the key - its just "Invalid" and go find out yourself why now.
To me it was just bad communication, easily avoidable mistakes - in the end all it did was put me away from the game.
And when I read I can only play it low-res during trial and still have to buy a copy to install it AGAIN for hi-res playing I just gave up.
OMG this is absolutely idiotic.
A trial is supposed to attract customers and show the best features of the game, graphic included.
Forcing them to play in Low resolution ain't exactly clever........
I think Turbine is smoking something really bad for their brain, better they stop before they burn all their remaining brain cells.
From their FAQs:
However, this client does not have high resolution graphics or the introductory cinematic. You will need to install DDO using the DDO DVD in order to access the high resolution graphics and the introductory cinematic.
The DDO 7 Day Free Trial is valid in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Stay tuned to DDO.com for details on how you can participate in our European trial program.
Apparently there is NO EUROPEAN trial keys AT ALL. Searching for trial related information on their europen website leads to no result so dont tell me "you could have used the euopean website to get a key". The nice pic with "Try it now 7 days free" on the european website leads to...you guessed it... http://trial.ddo.com/ (the same US site I used to get a key in the first place !)
So - Turbine links from their euopean site to a download for a (gimped) trial that doesnt even allow european players to participate. If there is a vacant job in the marketing department anytime soon let me know.
