We've had a fair few music/gig related threads recently, and I thought i'd follow that trend... I wanna know what the WORST gig you've EVER been to was. Two rules here though. Firstly, it has to be a professional gig - Sound techs, signed bands etc. Secondly, you have to have been there. I don't want "I heard such and such was shit..." or "The TV coverage of such and such was shit"... Got that? OK, let's go for it. I'll start.
Though I have to say, I've never really been to an absolutely AWFUL gig - probably because I haven't been going to them for long enough - but for me, I'm gonna nitpick some specific sets from Kerrang Tour this January in Bristol - Carling Academy. There were 4 acts playing. Leading was Aiden, then Still Remains, then Hawthorne Heights, then Bullet for my Valentine. Lets run through them seperately.
Aiden:- AMAZING performance (though I hate their studio stuff) - the crowd was wild in 30 seconds and we had more pits, walls, and crowdsurfs than every other set. Will really knew how to work the crowd, standing IN the crowd sometimes (more like 'on' really) and letting people do whatever they wanted to him (one of my mates groped him... that was funny...)...
Still Remains:- Utter shit. (Hence where the specific set i was nitpicking comes in). They played awfully, had NO audience interaction WHATSOEVER - not even "Hi, we're Still Remains." They just came on, played their songs with no pauses between them, no calls for pits or walls or anything, nothing. They killed the crowd (loads of people actually went out into the lobby out of boredom), and were just awful.
Hawthorne Heights:- Shut it, haters. They played well. Virtually as soon as they came on, they said "look, you've got f*ckin' Still Remains, Aiden, and BULLET *crowd goes wild* here - we know none of you wanna see us... We know we're just the pussys of emo, and noone wants to listen to our shit. So we wrote this for you." And went into a pretty heavy hardcore-styled song specially written for the concerts (and on their new album). Some good audience interaction, and everyone (even those of my friends who said they'd go outside when HH came on coz they're 'pussy emos *corrects side-fringe*' ) was singing along to Niki FM and stuff. You couldnt hear their singer over the crowd, and the crowd was only about 250 people. They actually revived the crowd after Still Remains.
Bullet For My Valentine:- The headline act. Kerrang's 'front-man' band. 'Best band ever' supposedly. Awful. The crowd loved it and ate their shit up like it was solid gold. Everyone was chanting "Bullet, bullet, bullet..." for ages throughout the whole concert, they were that hyped to see them. Which made their gig look good when they came on, because everyone was into it, pits left right and center, crowd surfers, people singing lyrics, all that shit... But the fact is... If you actually listened to the band (which you couldnt do over the distortion from the amps) they were f*cking awful. The guitar solos were lacking, to a SERIOUS extent. A lot of screamed lines were sung because Jay wasnt doing his backing vocals properly. And then, just to use one example to actually destroy what they played. 'Hand of Blood'. Undoubtably their most popular song (at least in my area). Even the chavs like this stuff. My band cover it, and everyone loves it. Because of the time we've spent playing it, I know this song inside out. And frankly, Bullet f*cked up their own song. The guitar intro (supposed to be harmonised between the two guitars) was out of sync. Matt didn't sing half of the lyrics (leaving it up to the crowd is one thing... But he just didnt try)... They didnt intergrate the crowd into the song at all (ie no "finish this line", no pits, no walls, no nothing). Finally, frankly, I was insulted by the drumming. From the get-go, it was out of time, missing the crucial first note of the intro because their drummer was too busy fiddling with his hats. Next, he cut a half of the double bass out of the song - never a good move in screamo - as well as completely massacring the signature "boom boom bo-bo-bo-bo-tshhh...tshhhh.... tshhh" (best way of phrasing it :P) drum line. He played the snare roll half speed, sounding AWFUL through the amps, and one final thing to kill the song completely. He actually stopped playing for a full two bars during the easiest bit of the song because he got so out of time. The guitarists lost time because of this, and it really did sound, frankly, SHIT.
What about you guys... Who was shit? Who had no musical talent? Who made you wish you'd stayed in with a movie on your own that night?
