It all depends on the character models and play style for me.
If it is a fantasy style game with amazing character models I am going to be more immersed because of the simple beauty of the image.
1. You can react to mobs chasing you more easily. 2. You created your character, now you get to look at it.

In a war format shooter I say first person, it feels more like you are in the driver's seat.
1. Allows you to sneak up on people and people to sneak up on you. (realistic) 2. You see your gun and what's in front of you, especially in the case of a sniper, I prefer that for a shooter.

I like both, it just comes down to what kind of game I'm playing.
