Two questions

gschenk3gschenk3 Member Posts: 93

Hi,

I've been playing the game for the last couple days in between crashes, log in problems and startup problems and I have two questions about the game:

1)Would you classify this as more of a fiasco or an unmitigated disaster? I am more inclined to label it a fiasco as disaster seems to imply some outside force instead of just shere incompetance.

2)Does this now officially qualify as the worst release of all time? I was there for WWIIOL, SWG and Anarchy Online releases. They were bad, really bad. This seems somehow worse since when you do actually get into the game your reward is putting sticks in a big pile. Very slowly.

I was a tester for this game, and have played right through since before the launch.

In the days just before the launch most of the majorbugs seemed to have been ironed out of the game, but with the masses of traffic on the launch day the servers were crippled. Even 10 mins before the new keys were handed out there didn't seem to be any problems.

Since that time there there have been masses of login & tracking problems, CTD's and awful lag. Most of these problems seemed to stem from too many processes being sent to the servers causing a bottleneck. These aren't too bad if you have alot of patience.

As i already stated i've played everyday since the public release, during that time you could notice all of the improvements and setbacks that the developers had as the optimised the servers and the coding. Now in the past 24 hours the game appears to have been returned to the state it was in just before the public launch. Which is a major improvement, But it may be too early to say for definate that the lag has been sorted.

As for the Launch it was bad, but not as bad as some of the other online games. Correct me is i'm wrong but WWIIO took nearly a year to get running properly after it's launch and didn't some of the SWG servers have to go offline for the first 2 weeks after that went public?

RB's problem was that for their server stress test they expected all of those with pre orders to play in the test, But the vast majority of them did not even login until after the public release. and those that did were mainly those that were testing before the pre orders went on sale.

decent game, great potential, awsome idea....average launch

I am unclear on what you expected. When I started playing EQ2, the first thing I did was kill a giant rat with a club by pressing one button...I was underwhelmed to say the least. The game got better as I moved away from the tourtorial.

You are going to need to know how to make piles if you want to do any serious crafting, just like you need to learn to autoattack in EQ2.

Like I said, I am just not sure what you were expecting to do.

as far as the logging in and lag, update your drivers and give it a go today...they just loaded some improvments for the lag.

If you knew what you are doing and how to do things efficiantly it takes 30 to 45 mins to make a pile. And hour and a half if yourfiguring it out. and 3 hours if you keep complaining.

One thing you have to remember in this game is. Not how many you can make in an hour but how many hours it takes to make something. Which can be a good or bad thing

Ah Hercules, you're way off as usual.

It takes a few seconds to kill a rat. It takes a few seconds to add a stick to the pile.

It takes 40 minutes of rat-killing to level up. It takes 40 minutes of stick-adding to complete the pile

    See?

Making piles is less fun, but unlike killing rats, they are optional. You don't have to do it if you don't want to! This is known as a 'non-linear' game.  Simply ask the local mayor to de-attend you and you don't have to endure the process.

    Back on topic!

Roma-Victor's release was a true shocker. The dev's claim they're 'chasing the lag monster into a corner' or something like that. It would be nice for the lag issues to be fixed so they can finally start adding all that missing content.

From what I see in this tread
    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/thread/92636
It would seem like they have slayed the lag moster. lets hope it dosnt have too many brothers which we cant see.

Erm weren't we talking about the rat in tutorial of EQ2  lol.

So if anyone is way off its you for sure since there is no rat bashing to level up in EQ2.I guess you did not play EQ2 so maybe need a bit of education.

There used to be a boat trip tutorial to show you the ropes which was optional and this involved learning the controls, using the vendor ,combat etc which was about 15 mins.As a gimick(the devs even said it before the game launched) the combat involves hitting a rat with a club(aka as tribute to the rat bashing jokes of old EQ).

So if this 2 hit kill of a rat is what you call compulsory and takes 40 mins(erm 40 mins to 2 hit a rat??),there is a nice info all you got to do is click no tutorial when creating the character and wham you are off to quest or fight goblins .

Roma victor involves attending from the start which has NOW become optional due to the magister but there is NO click of a button to deattend you ,you actually have to wait for him to be online and do this for you!So which is more oiptional eh?

I am sure you will come and say "well if not rats then goblins.orcs its all the same to me".Then again that will only show your lack of knowledge of EQ2 since it has crafting too just as RV and you can choose the option of becoming non combatant. Also EQ2 actually has more options on gaining levels(RV uses skill based like UO so here it will be gaining skill). In RV you raise combat skill by boring sparring in arena .In EQ2 you raise level by

    1)questing

    2)exploring

    3)fighting

4)collection!(i wrote a post a while ago as a guide how to gain level 50 without a single blow and this involved doing collection, non combat quest and exploring dangerious areas )

So where you come up with rat killing in EQ2 to level up is way beyond me .I can only imagine due to the fact you never played it you would come up with this statement.

So the only thing way off is fact that you talked without playing EQ2 to not know what the  "rat killing" been talked about here was

Also there is a good reason 3,300 ppl rated EQ2 8.2 and RV struggling with a rating of 6.6 with a mere 102 votes you know  ,but thats not even on the same topic been discussed but worth pointing out.

Forget? You dont know because you gave up when it was too hard...admit it. Yet another example of how this game is rated lower than it deserves because whiners had no idea what they were playing and are now all pissy about it. Next you can go to WW2ol and complain that there is no BFG.

too hard? What did i miss some biochemical carbon cycle that i needed to perform before placing my firewood in that pile?

I think you must mistake hard with totally boring my friend.

If anything RV is very simplistic, extremely repeatitive and the only hard part is the total lack of a proper manual or tutorial .Once you figured out what is what the game is exactly like i said boring, simple and did i mention how repeativive it is?

Again, you are flat out wrong, you dont know because you played the game for like 10 min.

bring somthing other than the firewood pile up?

simplstic? Hardly, the way all the various skills interact is quite complex

repeative? Wrong...I hardly ever do the same thing twice in a week, and I dont even fight atm.

no totorial? what do you think attending is? oops, I forgot you got unattended because your firewoodpile collasped, so you wouldnt know.

If you want to bash this game, fine. Just come up with some things that are actually true.

so what makes this game too hard to play since you made such a statement?

I assume we are looking past the terrible server perfomance and the choppy engine when you said "it was too hard for me to play".

Again you are relatively new to this site so have little knowledge of when i rate games.I have in many posts in the past said no mmorpg  under 1 week of play should be reviewed.

Attending is a tutorial?Wow,longest and most boring tutorial in mmorpg history .See RV does win an award.

Does it still involve the carbon cycle ?

I said too hard for you, apperently. Way to ignore the rest of my post.

I will eat my amphora if you played this game for a week. What did you do? besides try to build a firewood pile, get deattended and get killed in the grove?

Ok, here is why I think the game may be too hard for you:

    1. it took you over an hour to try and build a firewood pile that takes most people 40 min

    2. You talk about how boring the game is, but site no examples

    3. You mentioned combat once, but as far as I could tell, got it wrong in ways that even a casual observer like myself could notice

    4. Didnt ever seem to ask for help from the other players, ignoring the whole 'community' aspect of the game.

    5. point out a bunch of things in the atmitted 'clunky' interface that seemed to be deal breakers for you, but the rest of us just work with/around.

    6. whine about the lag

    7. didnt know there were quests in the game, even though every NPC offers one

Just off the top of my head

I must appologize to the makers of this game as well as the players. I had only played it for a few days and decided that the experience of attending was the whole total of this game. I have revised my review of it and now I have to eat a fair bit of crow here.

The community of this game is the finest I have ever seen. Not one person I have ever approached has denied me skill training, food, or advice. While I still feel that the game is not what I would generally pay for the people in the game more than make up for any deficiency.

I must also appologize to the makers of this game for calling it a fiasco. That was unfair and uncalled for. They have quite limited resources I have learned and are determined to make this one of the finest crafting and combat games around. It is a crying shame that finances dictated that they bring it live before it was ready, but we all have to feed our kids even mmorpg makers.

If this game had a set monthly fee I am not sure I would pay it simply that in my very limited amount of gaming time in between changing diapers and making bottles wouldn't make it worth it, I am quite content to have paid for the game and the lifetime membership that it entails. I look forward to the upcoming changes that are being made and regret any people that might have stayed away from the game by my comments.

    He has seen the light

This game is all about community. If you stay a hermit you will A.) not learn anything B.) Hate the game cuz you are not getting the full experiance that everyone else is having.

The small Dev team and low budget it makes development of the game slow and tedius however they keep thier word and get the job done even though they know they are seeing little to no salary for it. People seem to forget they are not in this for the money, if they were they would of stopped the game along time ago i think. No they are in this because they want to make the best damn historically accurate MMORPG ever made. Just for that they deserve some credit.
