Ok my only experience with DAoC in the past was playing the free trial for a few hours before I uninstalled it.... obviously I may have not given it a fair chance. I have played EQ,WoW,SWG(this game was great until they BROKE IT!), and planetside. I like how there are so many classes for DAoC but im kinda ancy about another mmorpg. Basically my concerns are this game is going to be an underpopulated grindfest which lasts for a month or more just so I can pvp. I also may have to hunt for equipment(another pet peeve of mine) just so I can stay competitive. So yeah obviously I don't know a lot about this game except it seems to have had a glorious past like SWG once did. If I did play on a classic server and I did subscribe would I have to buy all their expansions or no? I might give the free trial another chance if this game isn't another grindfest =/=. Don't get offended by anything I said here please im just quite skeptical of another mmorpg but I figured might as well check up on it again...

Yeah, there's a lot more to DAoC than meets the eye, there's still so much I haven't seen. If you play on the classic servers, there seems to be a healthy lowbie population (I just resubbed myself). The one thing about this game is that there is a lot of content, so I think you will be always doing something for a long time. You don't have to jump into RvR/PvP right away.
I am currently digging it until either Vanguard or WAR comes along.
You can pick up the Epic Edition, for like 20 bucks, it includes all the expansions.
Current Games:
Try to find a guild to join from start, this game is not at it's best if you try it alone.
If you don't like the interface there are alot of custom UIs that can be downloaded from fansiites (more maps ect)
As for many classes to choose from, it's one of the many thigs that are great with DAoC...if u get bored of the character you play, just roll anotherone!
Also try the diffrent realms....but needles to say Midgard is the greatest!!!
To answer your question. Yes you will have to work for you character to get good. It can take you anywhere from 2 weeks to a month and a half to get to 50. What would the best gear be worth if anyone could get it without working for it? And...yes you should buy all the expansions (Catacombs & Darkness Rising) or better yet, just buy the Epic Edition that costs $30.
This game take a lot of work to be good in. Getting to 50 is just the beginning. You then have to raise money for a PvP suit or you can do all the quests for your Epic armor. You will also need to complete your Champion quests for the Champion weapon. After that you will need to PvP to learn to play your character with anywhere from 8-100 people. It will take a while to master your character and a while to move up in the realm ranks.
I don't say this to disuade you, but because your post sounded like you want to be handed everything and I would hate for you to waste you money if you expect that from DAOC. DAoC has gotten a lot easier over the years, but you still have to put a solid month or two into it to be pretty good. But it's a really good game and it's worth the effort. Just make sure you join a good guild and they will help you out along the way.
The classic servers are just missing one expansion - Trials of Atlantis.
