At this point I'm going to ask for clarification of the word "grind." If you want to get technical, Grand Turismo and Pac Man have grind. Simply doing the same thing over and over again doesn'd constitute grind unless that task is completely unentertaining. The racing in GT is compelling. Eating dots and dodging ghost monsters is compelling. Killing mobs, collecting loot and leveling your character was compelling in Diablo 2.
My experiences with asian MMORPGs have been largely mixed. RO was deep enough in it's combat and equipment system that killing mobs became a kind of experimentation that was genuinely fun. FlyFF, on the other hand, didn't really have enough steam to carry it past the first job change.
Maybe we should be a bit more honest with ourselves about what it is we want out of MMORPGs, be they asian or western. Some of the worst MMORPGs I've ever played have been Western ( I'm looking at you Endless Ages), and some of the best MMOs I've ever played are asian (War Rock, Gunz, Ragnarok Online, etc.).
Originally posted by Muddah Grind grind grind all day long I grind all day while I sing this song~! Asians die from not eating or sleeping while playing online games or from killing each other IRL for stealing in game items from each other. That's just a few headlines I've read
Even their MMOFPS you really need to play 100's of matches to lvl up.
They have a MMO for everything Online Dancing to Online Racing I'll give them credit for creativity in coming up with ideas for things to make games out of. But they all have a huge GRIND..............
This is simply because people will stand there taking turns killign each other for exp. Doesn't sound like they are playing it the right way does it? Also, when you play an FPS do you think about levels? Your more likely to be thinking about how your going to snipe your opponent or how you should sneak around the building to shank him from behind.. In conclusion, if you play MMOFPS's just to level up then yes, it will be a hideous grind.. But if you play for the action packed experience most FPS have to offer, you won't even notice your leveling!
I haven't played Koreans games but i thinnk they are great so i may try to play one of them in the future. For sure they are not popular as wow but they could also have its own unique style.

Western games are based more on the single player RPG model. The player is given a set of objectives to tackle in a semi-linear fashion. This idea is probably the least MMO friendly since it requires a constant stream of new objectives and new content. Bottom line: Western games are GOAL ORIENTED.Asian games are based more on collecting. Often times, you'll see something like "over 5 million items" in the features list of an asian game. Unlike western gamers, asian gamers aren't so into hitting the level cap as fast as possible. The aim of most asian game design is to create something along the lines of The Sims meet Diablo. Oddly enough, many Asian games hit that balance between Animal crossing and Champions of Norrath. A good example would be Mabinogi or Ragnarok Online. As a side note: World of Warcraft was originally concieved as following the collectable card model. Come to think of it, Guild Wars follows that model as wel.
I'm curious about this Mabinogi, any decent info available in english? I wasn't able to find much...
