game most like UO?

hey all- new member.

anyway, ive been playing MMO's since '99 with UO.  I played it till around 2003, then stopped for some time.  I played Anarchy for the first 2 months it was out, and got really bored of it fast.  Played Jumpgate beta (ugh), Shattered Galaxy (hey! it was free!), and most recently ive been playing WoW.  Ive played WoW for bout 4 months now, and I'm gettin bored of it.

out of all my gaming with in my life, ive never come across a game as addictive as UO was to me.  i think its cuz how customizable it was and how simple the gameplay was, but also how advanced it was.

i read somethign recently that had me thinking-  most games out there are level based and is why they suck comparably-  you get to lvl 'x' and then the games generally over.  in UO, you can become a 7x GM (dunno what its at now..8x, 9x, elders and whatnot), and a month or so later, theyll tweak some skills and whatnot so now 2 of your 7, suck and are useless...so you drop the 2 and rebuild your character.  i had 5 characters on one shard for all 4 years i was on, and most of them went through many changes throughout.

question is- is there any game out there right now thats bout the same as the UO gameplay was?  mainly- how nothing is really permanent.  ive contemplated goin back to UO, but i think id be so far behind and itd be hard as hell to get back into it from scratch now as its been around for a while, and last i remember the "economy" was pretty messed up and gold reallly had no value anymore.

        Hey flipperdan!

    Welcome to the forums!

    well let's see...

out of all my gaming with in my life, ive never come across a game as addictive as UO was to me.  i think its cuz how customizable it was and how simple the gameplay was, but also how advanced it was.

I think this is the typical "virgin" mmo experience.  Everyone feels that way about the first game they get into.  And be warned, nothing will ever quite be the same.

Anyway, good games are on the way,, have hope.

From what you've said it seems clear you want a sandbox game.  Or, basically, a game where they give you the tools to make the game how you want it to be.  It is a separate genre from what the mainstream MMO market has deviated from.  Linear games take on the role of EQ  (a la WOW, DAOC, etc.)  with levels and quest lines and class systems.

Sandbox games are more skill point oreinted and are my favorite kinda games too.

Star Wars Galaxies was my all time favorite mmo for the main reasons you listed.  However SOE took all that away, and we won't ever speak of that again...

Sadly though there isn't much that can captivate a hardcore UO fan.  They need complexity, flexability, and most importantly, freedom.   I don't know where to steer you as I am looking for my SWG replacement as well.

I can recommend, with much hesitation however, Roma Victor.   It is a sandbox with huge potential.  You can essentially do anything you want, with an emphasis on realism.  And like UO you are put on the world to make of it what you and your peers will.  (work is hard, reward is sweet)  No monthly fee either.  But as it stands now it has a lot of refining needed.  (they did bust up the lag problem though so if you read about that disregard it )       I am planning on giving it a shot in about a week depending on finances.  I am not so concerned about the state of the game as I can log in once a month for the rest of my life for all it'll cost me.  Anyway I don't want to ramble on....  just check it out if you please to.  I have great hopes for what will become of the game and community.

    hope it helps

Darkfall is supposed to be a modern day UO but its been in development a looooooong time so who knows if it will ever be released or not. However if it is released its definately worth checking out.

Eve is most like UO imho. Course the settings are completely different but in terms of player advancement and game mechanics i find them to be very similiar.

    from what you are listing,
Eve Online - it's pretty open, with no leveling per se, only skills - some1 wrote it would take like 2 years to learn all the skills, and by then there are new ones introduced....

SWG is still like what you list - they have something then take it away and you have to respec or reroll.....

Saga of Ryzom - it's pseudo levels, but pretty heavily skill based. You can learn all skills (crafting/harvesting/magic/fighting) or not, depends on your time, lazyness or whatever. great community, easy to get into.

Horizons Online perhpas - I haven't played it long enough, it's sort of levels as well, but also skill heavy. You can play a dragon if you like that :P. But there has been some problems with the billing system, so I'd say stay away from this, even the demo (need cc for it...).

All games have trials, SoR has time-unlimited-trial.

EVE is nothing like UO, get off it. you gain skills automatically...hmm doesnt sound like UO.

Sadly there is no good game out there like UO used to be.

Its never to late to come back to UO. I had once a 9 month break and gradually came back.  I would try Saga of Ryzom or Horizons if I was you. I found them quiet entertaining.

UO was my first MMORPG and it blew me away.

Eve is the closest to UO. All the developers are former UO players and fans.

Personally I like the space/scifi setting better than fantasy. I like ships better than human avatars.

But the emotions are the same, attacking and being attacked make your heart race just like they did in UO.

Only thing thats missing is doing the same thing over and over for skillups, in Eve its time-based.

Eve online is the closest you will get to the original UO pre-trammel. The main difference is the skill training grind has been removed from Eve online.

Eve was made by ex-UO players and you can tell. I played UO for 7 years btw and find almost every other MMORPG to be pretty limited and boring.

QFT!  Any time you ask an open ended question, someone will invariably answer with Eve.  Why are we here?  Is Tom Cruise really from the same planet as Michael Jackson?  How can we bring aobut mid-east peace?  Who is the mysterious man behind the curtain?  4+4=?  Meaning of life?  EVE!  Eve is the answer to all of these things and more.  The worst part about it is that Eve is a really simple and boring game when it comes down to it.  If there was a game to be subtitled "watch paint dry online", it would be Eve.

/back on topic... Tabula Rasa has Lord British himself working on it.

  • I would say Eve and Saga of Ryzom are most similar to UO on the RPG mechanics wise.  But not necessarily gameplay wise.

Yeah Garriot is working on TB but we have no idea whether it will be anything like UO.  Also TB has gone through major changes over time and had other major personalities come and go.  Supposedly it has a shooter like interface too, although all the screenshots are 3rd person.

If you think Eve has boring gameplay, that is fine, alot of people do.  But if you are going to rail against off topic Eve references ina thread for which Eve is actually one of the better answers.  Well you should pick your battles better.  Many of the elements that set UO apart are also seen in Eve.  Anyone mentioning Eve in reference to UO is not automatically being a fanboi.  It should be clear to anyone with a brain that Eve and UO share more in common than WoW or EQ and UO.  Skill based, player housing, open PvP, player looting/item loss etc etc etc

    1)  The only game that really FELT like UO was Pre-CU SWG  (Probably because many of the SWG DEVs were former UO Devs)

    2)  Other than the fact that the skill system is time based EVE *is* very similar to UO in many ways.  Except that it's sci-fi and space based.  It IS, however, very similar in concept.  BOTH are sandbox games.    I play EVE because I loved UO.  Because I loved UO I loved SWG... Because I loved the FREEDOM in UO I can enjoy EVE... but I do not "love" it.  I am still waiting for the next UO.  Be it sci-fi or Fantasy.  Till then EVE is the only remaining sandbox since SOE nuked SWG.

    3)  Garriott has already come out and stated that TR (Tabula Rasa) will not be much like UO.

Look at the list of games coming up. Ask yourself can I build a home. That simple question is what determines if i like a game. Bases sorta count. Or in Eve's case Space stations. I still miss my farm on Uo tho. With a nice little shack besides a stream*sigh Not one upcoming game lets me feel like I own part of the world. Not even Hero's Jounrey. Though HJ supposedly lets you rent a room. Thats ok. Hrmm one of the few things I liked about eq2 was that. I realy dont see me leaving CoH any time soon. Its the only game Im having fun on anymore. Got sick and lost my Eve Account. I just dont have the patience to get back into that game.

I would like that someone takes EVE as a buisness model, the gameplay, and makes an actual interesting game from it.

its ashamed that EVERY game out there has to follow the easy cookbook recipe of an RPG-  fantasy, levels, and fighting.

the first, and still considered the most unique/best by many- UO.  EQ's being out around the same time for some reason took off more than UO.  Don't know why more developers dont do skill based and allow for a more "realistic" environment.

If theres only 2 actual games out right now that really have a large audience and follow the skill system (UO and EVE), the MMO industry has some serious problems ahead...basically, no game that will ever be as large of a community of UO/EQ/AC simply cuz theres TONS of games out there now that nearly the same which will make the MMO community spread so thin.

ill look into EVE.  im a little jaded on the whole Fantasy/lotr genre of MMO's.

my big concern about trying the very small and "no name" MMO's is whether there will be an actual in game community large enough that itll have the full MMO experience

btw, i tried UO bout a year ago, and I just didnt like it as much anymore.  it was such a different game from when i played.  EA totally destroyed an amazing game

The way you automatically gain skills overtime is what made me turn from EVE, plus the fact it will take months before you can PvP succesfully in it.  Basically it is a long term deal or you might as well not start playing at all.  Wheras simple gameslike woW you can get into the BG action early on and leveling up isn't that tough anyways.

EvE is a macroers paradise too, just like UO was....maybe there are similarities lol

well, last night i downloaded EVE and got a trial account.  i must say, it seems very interesting to say the least.

has anyone ever played Jumpgate?  i had the unfortunate opportunity to play that game (beta).  EVE seems almost like the exact same game as Jumpgate, but a little more cleaned up...the whole idea of it all-  have a ship that goes around and mines asteroids with a mining laser is literally the exact same as Jumpgate.  then, turn around and sell it for credits (same "currency" as jumpgate) and use it to buy ship upgrades.  i never played Jumpgate long enough to figure out hte skill system, but i can assume it was probly somewhat the same as Eve.

i just dont see eve relatively close to UO at all from what i played last night.  its still level based...but more on an individual skill level.

what i love bout UO, is someone with for example 90.5 magery and as someone with 90.6 magery is not going to be the same EXACTLY...very slightly weaker...not noticeably, but it is.  as in-  EVERY skill point you get makes a difference.

thats what i dont like bout level based-  someone with (for example in WoW) a character thats lvl 59 and is bout 90% through lhis needed XP to lvl 60 is going to be as weak/powerful as someone who literally just became lvl59 (and only has as little as 10 xp).  if you've played WoW before, you'd know lvl 59 takes a long long time to get to 60 (as long as you're not grinding).   basically, all you're extra experience doesnt do anything for you until it gets you to the next level.

maybe ill give UO a shot again.  what i loved about it, is it wasnt a hack 'n slash game either and you can literally play your entire account having never once picked up a sword...as in, you can be a miner/lumberjack/fisher/other trade.  basically, a game that when you just wanna relax and kill time- you can!  from the sound of it, EVE seems too time consuming (and the whole tutorial i went through made me think that too).

just gotta sit and wait to see if any developer ever produces something new/original sometime!

Having the same feeling. UO was my first mmo to and i liked it very much. I didn't had to fight if i only wanted to talk to friends i logged a crafter and did my thing. It also had a very good player market always was fun to go to the bank and pick up some stone our a gate to go to a merchant spot our a gamble game. But almost always a game dev makes a bad decision and makes the game a little worse.

After that i played eq,daoc, lineage 1 and 2 , city of heroes, wow and some free mmorpg's. Never had the feeling again. Lineage and daoc where much fun to but never had the same feeling as UO. But they are making a new engine and improve the graphics and will try again.

Also i'm reading some site info's on new mmorpg to see if there's a new UO around. If you find one let me know will try it to then.

Nothing like what UO used to be
  • herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

sadly yoiu missed SWG before the changes .It was a good game for customization even though it was sci-fi not medival like UO.

TBH there is nothing out there like UO.Roma victor has features that lets you customize but sadly its a disaster of a game and i would stir clear of it.

Maybe you can have a look at saga of ryzom  and eve which are ok games .Or try find a shard offering UO as you like it(if you look you shall find).

I suggest you give eve online a try as it was a free trial.

one other thing that made UO perfect- isometric 3rd person.  probly the best POV you can have for an RPG, and i dont think theres really any other MMO out there that does this.  theres ones that zoom out a bit, but not isometricly.

that POV also enables probly the BEST chat system in any game.  you can actually see whos talking, and who the person is talking to.

a big problem in other MMO's, is i dont get too involved socially because i tend to ignore chat systems unless im looking for help.

i just dont see why devs dont take into consideration that classic UO is probably the most loved MMO out there for reasons that many MMO sites talk about- perfect unregulated PVP, perfect looting, ability to steal, housing with a PURPOSE, a simple/noncomplex skill system that is 100% skill based with each improvement in skill making a diff, and a perfect POV for chatting

hell, even UO of today probly puts most MMO's to shame, but it seems very disorganized and more about hack n slash after reading up on it nowadays.

gotta hurry up n finish my comp sci degree and go to Full Sail and get a job as a game dev somewhere and put together an MMO that the PEOPLE want.  not the classic EQ recipe for an MMO
