How many of us would like to see a Horror MMORPG?

EnigmaEnigma Member UncommonPosts: 11,384

I'm sorry for the poll fellas as I know people go crazy with these things, but I have to say that I have only posted one poll in the past 4 months so be easy on me lol.

I've been wanting a good, decent, horror mmorpg game.  I've seen the free ones, but I would like to see a good quality horror in terms of content, graphics, professions (or creature-selection) as well as human selection.

I wouldnt mind playing a mmorpg that will have the bejeesus scared out of me.  I remember the days in college when a group of friends and I would plug the ol Playstation into a stereo system and then play resident evil in the complete dark.  Now, I know some of you younger folks think that game graphics sucks but 10 years ago, it was very good....and scary.

I just think it would be nice to see a mmorpg out there like that.  LOL, and dont say "Priest" because I dont see horror in the Wild West as scary.  Plus it looks like "Tombstone" meets "The Undead of WoW" I would like to see a great music selection, scary abandoned houses, vacant mental asylums, as well as blood wars between vampires, ghosts, werewolves, banshees, etc.

The zones could be real-time earth with various counrties to "hunt" and "feed".  Your guildes can become like a "coven" (I know..a little to much like "Underworld" but a decent idea) where your players can commune together.

Also, you can obtain a npc by "biting" or possession.  I dont know...just spouting some ideas off.  Ive played some great horror Pen and Paper RPGs ...wouldnt mind playing them online either

Anyways...it would be fun to play

Yeah, I can see the PvP getting real interesting as you fight and kill a werewolf and in need of healing, you (a vampire) can only heal in your coffin.  As you are slowly healing your wounds in a deep sleep, along comes a Player Character Human Vampire Hunter with a set of stakes with your name on it....

I think that's a great idea.. and its inevitable someone will create that someday.  Its a pretty much untapped genre in MMORPGs, as far as i know.  As developers get more courageous about expanding into different genres aside from fantasy / sci-fi I think it could happen and be quite successful.  Just look at the popularity of all the White Wolf games.

Another element i'd love to see in a horror MMORPG would be Lovecraftian / Cthulhu type of stuff.

Yup, that's exactly what Im talking about! image  When you travel around different parts of the world, the "spiritual" realm may have their own "gangster-type" storngholds on those particular lands.

For example: A Banshee my start out in Ireland or Scotland and then progress anywhere in the world and may have bonuses in their starting regions.

Vampires in New York, London, or Romania, etc. etc.

You could have Human Player Characters who are powerful as they are granted different powers from Cthulhu and are just mad, raving, lunatics (long lost souls forgotten and left dead in underground English Asylums)  lol

You could have Priests, Rabbi, etc, who are endowed with some sort of supernatural power (not to be closely resembled to fantasy clerics...as that would kinda suck)

I mean, the possibilty of profession/race and starting location is endless

Id love a horror themed mmo assuming it was fun to play.  I wanna see like fallout 1 type horror though personally, not much for vampires and magic users that arbitrarily shoot fireballs etc..  Give me genetically engineered supermutants or psychic omniscient evil beings composed of raw flesh over werewolves any day.

that would be a good mmorpg also.  however, Im talking about good ol Gothic, traditional horror.  The kind that makes the little hairs on the back of your neck tingle.

The story of Frankenstein was written when a group of aristrocrates got together on a stormy night (literally) and gave each other a contest: who could come up with the scariest plot.  Well, when Mary Shelley read out her synopsis for Frankenstein, every single person in that mansion stayed in the same room and never went to sleep.

After the death of her fiancee in a boating accident, she expanded the story into a novel by writing pages and pages of Frankenstein by candlelight at her fiance's graveyard.

Im talking about that kind of horror image

One of the single player games I used to enjoy was Dungeon Keeper. Partly for the offbeat humor, but also for the reversal of the usual roles of hero and monster in a game.

I think it would be fun to play a MMORPG which had a similar reversal. And a good dark horror theme might make an appealing background for that.

The world setting could be grunge modern, with the npcs being ordinary people going about ordinary lives, while the player characters are supernatural monsters from competing genres. Competing against each other while bringing darkness and horror to the unsuspecting populous. Werewolves versus Vampires might be clich

So far the only game that has horror in it is "Priest".  I know it doesn't look good now being western/horror, but maybe in time we'll all be singing "OKLAHOMA where the dead keep rising from their graves"(to the tune from a song in OKLAHOMA the musical).

Yeah there aren't to many horror games out there.  Now if you wanted horrible there are a lot of games on that list that you could check out.

here is a pen and paper RPG character sheet I used to play.

Using something like this to implement online would be pretty easy to do

    http://www.white-wolf.com/Images/CharacterSheets/V3-4pagecharactersheet.pdf  <-- Vampire

    http://www.white-wolf.com/Images/CharacterSheets/werewolfrevisedcharsheet.pdf  <-- Werewolf

    http://www.white-wolf.com/Images/CharacterSheets/Wraithsheet.pdf <spectre

    http://www.white-wolf.com/Images/CharacterSheets/Mortals.pdf  <-- Mortals

    You get the picture image

Horror is at its best with the element of surprise, and once the surprise is over it is typically very mundane. To pull this off a MMOG would need massive amounts of content, on the scale of a MMOG that is 3+ years matured.

Forget what you know about the pen and paper games...imagination was the key to those being good. Good storytellers (game masters) + good players (strong imaginations) = good horror RPG. Once the world is painted in 3D, there is no longer a sense of imagination.

Vampires, liches, werewolves, ghouls, banshee's, different types of ghost's and skeletor undead. Ya, could be interesting, almost a type of FFA PvP where those interested in their own strength power and wealth. And then of course there could be the vampire hunters, using holy water, silver bullets, crucifix's, wooden stakes, large bladed objects. Could be interesting, and in some parts of the world, it could have a fairly nice and comforting look in the daylight. And then at night, or maybe in a haunted woods, very creepy, and where you start wetting your pants out of fright when a vile looking banshee comes out at you.

Of course, you could add typical fantasy, (elves and the sort) as well as mix it with slayer vs vampire. And all the intricacies of the system.

As well, hobbit vampires were just r0xx0rz!

lol, you had me until the Elf and hobbit part image

I'm talking about the classic gothic horror (without the elves, dwarfs, and hobbits)

It would also be kinda neat to control NPCs through a blood pact via a bite (as a Vampire or Werewolf).  That could work nicely for different domain control.

I actually thought about this some months ago.  Perhaps a Vampire/Werewolf game.  As I was running the idea through my head, keeping in mind the experiences that I have had with current MMO's, there were some areas that wouldn't seem to work.

As someone mentioned before, content would have to be very, very deep content.  To keep a game of this nature from breaking down to its most basic level, a game where opposing factions did nothing but run around constantly hunting each other, there would have to be a ton of content.  There would have to be a great diversion to keep the game interesting.  I imagine that the world would have to be huge to keep the game interesting.  I am not saying its not possible, but it would be very difficult.  I mean seriously the current crop of developers are having trouble making Fantasy MMO's that are any good.  Give them something with this level of challenge and they are sure to fail.

Ok, but are you looking for an actual MMORPG like Horizons or CoHs? Or are you instead looking for something more aking to PS or Neocron? That difference could spell how well the game is designed and how it is received by the general consumer market.

Stepping away from the White Wolf horror here, the RPG Vampire and Werewolves, since most things in that way are almost property of White Wolf right now and onyl they can decide if such a game should be made, I really like the Chtulu concept.

Not players being the monsters wrecking havoc on the poor humans, but players walking through a world infested by them.

    Chtulu

Resident Evil. (Could have a nice twist. If you want PvP.... you become a zombie)

    Army of Darkness

Those kind of stories would hold tons of challenges for the poor humans... And I would love to see Insanity level on characters, that when rising gives the character several ticks that happen automaticly. (jumping at shadows.. soft blabbering of nonsense at times... just short screams as he gets scared of nothing in particular..) And the equipment.... All the 19th century science stuff and such things.... Yes, Lovecraftian could be amazingly funny. So could  Army of Darkness or a more modern Resident Evil.

But... If we WOULD play monsters.... Then it would need a PvP setting in the same range as DaoC. Otherwise it would just get.... Stupid. (Hey another human.. lets eat him... human number... 5.897.. LOOK! Another human, lets eat him.)

Not if you add popularity level to the vampires after each kill meaning themore humans u kill the more likely people can spot you or your liar for your doom

Well I was pretty much talking about the same thing, I mean I know all the other fallout games were really lame in terms of atmosphere but the first one really did have a half decent atmosphere with its "walls covered in flesh pulsating to an unheard rythym" which "ejects a sliver of bone that pierces your eye" etc.  If you look at it in its own time frame that is anyways, I mean obviously its graphics were terrible by todays standard but at the time I actually got into it.

For some people its really hard to ever take the whole vampires, werewolfs etc stuff even remotely seriously just because even if some like man wolf hybrid were to exist then wed just tranquilize it or something and put it in a zoo not run scared from it... while at least scariness from something like resident evil or doom etc its like the whole world is crashing down on us and it seems somewhat feasible at least...

    Fantasy only for me!

For some, weird and mystical reason, I dont have the motivation to play a non-fantasy game unless...unless...maybe if a game would have the WhiteWolf and Black Dog signatures I would try it...maybe...but even then, only if I dont find it in a fantasy game before!

You have become better at hidding in spooky woods(17)!

I failed to see how Chtullu can be interesting in a MMORPG. solo sure, but in groups?  I wont group the red neck no matter how good he is in his field! :)
