The Reason

Coming from a potential Neocron subscriber, the reasons why Neocron population isn't growing.

The website.  The website for Neocron has a great new look and feel to it, definitely an improvement over the old one, but still lacks enough information.  You are supposed to supply Reakktorr with information before you can find out what the monthly fee is.  I don't have a problem with it, but wouldn't it be nicer to have a page about starting an account, page that provides you with the fees, activation, all the information you need about Neocron before you start committing yourself? (Or at least before you feel  like you are)

The forums.  Certain forums are blocked for whatever reason.  Not a big issue for me, but it does make the place feel censored.  A potential subscriber is forced to look around other places, such as mmorpg.com, for more information.  Whats the mmorpg.com forum got to say about Neocron?  For the most part griped about bugs and low population, things which won't attract new players.  Sure players might see that on the official forums, and that might hurt Neocron, but it would be better seeing it directly from the Neocron forums.

Neocron isn't advertised much.  I saw a few advertisements around The big Neocron 2 update, but that was the extent of them.  I know it is hard for members to spread news of Neocron across the web, but it is doubly hard for people to find out about Neocron.

To actually get started with Neocron, you must go through "sketchy" companies like Click To Pay and Pay By Cash.  We have a game played in multiple countries, where people don't really know where their information is going, or where it will end up, and they have to live with it getting processed by unreliable companies?  A little bit much to ask of us.

My final say is this:

I have always been attracted to Neocron, but never quite decided to play it.  Always the hassle of signing up, a sharp learning curve, and not much promise of a growing population.  Finally I have decided to try it.  If everyone thinks of Neocron the way I used to, it will never grow to its full potential.  I am hoping it doesn't let me down... too much.

Neocron single-handedly defined the sci-fi MMOFPS genre and is the benchmark from which I will judge all future attempts by any outfit to compete in that niche.  The gameplay systems are fantastic, think System Shock 2 + Deus Ex, what more does a game need?

Unfortunately after I gave the game almost 2 years of dedicated play they decided to go back on their promises and wiped the item database for NC2's release, that was the poison pill for me.  If the posts here are anything to judge it by, the same old bugs (inventory bugs, crashes, etc, ad infinitum) are still just as prevalent.

If you haven't ever played it, give it a few months try-out.  You'll see what I mean.  It is incredibly well-designed and great fun and also an extreme exercise in patience.  Just get used to restarting the client a lot, even when you shouldn't have to.

I decided that although you can always go back (to the game), you can never truly go back (to reliving the fun times before you got a little wiser).   Just listening to the old NC1 soundtrack brings all the memories flooding back to me, that's all I need anyway.
