    The funny thing is diagrams similiar to that are made for numerous games.

    I love this stuff-  I can see it now...

    Sitting at the internet cafe (office) the develepors have an epiphany.  Holding up the napkin drawing, they proclaim "we will call this the skill tree!"

    and all the lemmings cheer...
