Toa killed daoc Due to downtime and grovesome "hard ml quest" that drove the comunity into people in guilds started to hate each other due to artifacts and scrolls
The only reason people cared about DF was for leveling and most important trinketing. Get seals, buy items, destroy items, turn into trinkets, sell trinkets, then use the money to buy good player made equipment.
Your right there. I spend more time trinketing to buy crafter goods then raiding for sure. Still the point remains, people wanted to have DFs open to them. Keeping DF opened requried PvP.
I guess my only point is, you can't take a game which end game is PvP and take the focus away from PvP and expect good things to happen.
As someone has hit on excellently already ToA changed DAoC from a casual game to a raiding game. People came to DAoC from EQ. They were sick of having gear instead of skill decide battles. Sick of having to play 40 hours a week to accomplish anything noteworthy. ToA changed DAoC from a skill based game to an equipment based game where you were forced to raid to be able to enjoy RvR. It didn't help ToA was very buggy for years, and still has issues.
