Because of the new system that's in place I don't have enough points. Even though I have reviewed several games in the past. I realize they needed to do something to prevent people from stuffing the ballot box, so anyway, I'll post it here.
First the Experience system is the best I've ever seen. I've played a few different MMORPG's over the years and they all have gone something like this.
1. Kill 100,000 Bunny Rabbits with a stick until you get enough skill to
2. Kill 200,000 Rats with a knife to get enough skill to
3. Kill 400,000 Giant Rats with a Short Sword
With this skill system, you set the skill you want to train, and log off if you want, no bunny killing thousands of times, no grinding just to get to a level where cute little bunnies don't kick your butt.
As a noob in this game you can pretty much forget about PvP (as it is in all MMORPG games), but there is plenty else to do in the meantime.
You can be a miner, a tradesman, or you can blow up NPC pirates. But if you get out of empire protected space be carefull, there are pirate blockades and evil alliances everywhere just waiting to blow you up and take all of your stuff.
If you like you can just stay in empire space (also called care bear land) and mine and hunt NPC pirates without too much risk. Or you can go for the really big payoffs, rare minerals, big bounty pirates in what they call 0.0 (basically free for all) space.
There's nothing greater than running a blockade in your frigate and laughing as the 5 battleships that tried to blow you up just watch your tail lights (well maybe when I get my own Battleship and blow up the guys that got me last week, that will be greater).
Anyway I highly recommend this game, it takes me back to the early days of UO (before they care beared it to death). There was alway an element of danger, when you went out, there were monsters out there, not just computer generated ones, but true evil, people that would kill you and loot your corpse. This game has that same sense of danger (but it also has something for people who are not into this).
Just when you think things are going to get boring, you are running for you life (or exploding if you are not paying attention), or You are trying to figure out how you are going to get past the pirate blockade just up ahead, when a fleet of good guys comes rolling through and you slip through unoticed in the following mayem. Great Fun!!
This is definately a thinking persons game, people that are into the First Person Shooter type game probably won't enjoy this, it's not a twitcher game, but does require quick thinking and advance planning. Teamwork also pays off big in this game as there are many things to do alone, but just as many where having someone else along makes it possible.

Nicely Done! Has the ring of Truth to it. Rare.
The only part I disagree with the OP's review is that he makes it out that you either like a strategy game like Eve or FPS twitch games. but not both. Well I guess I'm the exception to the rule. I mostly play Eve but like to play FPS games like Half-LIfe 2 too. They both have that sci-fi feel.
Good review!
The problem I have with the game is it's economy. It's far quicker to buy and resell a GTC card (and perfectly legal too), than it is to earn your own fortune. I am not adverse to the secondary market; in a hyper-capitalist game like EVE, it makes a lot of sense. What is rather discouraging is the fact that I could spend several hours/days/weeks mining, or I could just resell GTCs and do something else.
Perhaps the problem is me, and not the game. Yet with all of EVEs economic complexities and subtlties, it all means nothing if you work for a living and a GTC is pocket change.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
I work for a living, in fact that is one of the reason's I'm not playing Eve atm. Not that $15/month is expensive but hard to justify right now. I can see where you are coming from with your views on the GTC thing. The way you are seeing it doesn't really bother me as in all games that I play those with bottomless pockets and/or the most free time always have an advantage in MOGs be it having a better system than me, a faster internet connection, buying in-game money/items through some website, etc etc. That exists in all forms of online play and maybe i'm just numb to it at this point.
My view on the GTC thing as someone who doesn't have bottomless pockets and endless playtime is they are a great opportunity for someone like myself. I can run enough L4s and hopefully not lose my Raven to make enough in-game money to purchase a GTC which I can use to either make my current playtime free or add another character to supplement the first for free. Free of course being time spent making money in game.
I think it is awesome that CCP is willing to let people essentially play their game for free, but that could just be me.
The GTC for Isk to me isn't an issue at all. The fact that its moderated by supply and demand makes it good. Its not like your real money is going to get a set amount of in game isk all the time. Last week 90 day codes were selling at 400 mil or more, this week a friend and I picked up a 90 day code each for 350 mil. The price has come down due to too many for sale and not enough buyers. The way CCP has handled this is the best solution out there I think. Buying in game money with real money is a problem for most games but at least this way CCP gets their monthly fees and the amount of money a player gets from a GTC sale is governed byt he games supply and demand market.
Hey if someone wants to go out and spend real money to get a faction battleship or carrier they can be my guest, it just hurts them that much more to me when they lose it. And yes they will lose it eventually
Yes, but that little slip there is for those that wish to earn isk without putting any ingame effort into it, and if someone wants to go and spend 15-40 real world dollars for 190-500 million isk or how ever much they go for nowadays, i don't mind if CCP gets the money, not some "gold farmer" I'll pay my $11 a month (buy a yearly subscription people...) and he'll pay his $15 + $30 every time he/she wants isk.
And if someone REALLY wants to spend so much on a game, good for them, but i'm not gonna go and spend $20 every time i want to buy and fit a tier 2 battleship, because, 190 mil doesn't do much in game. Take me 2 days and bam i have that ship built and ready, or 3 and it will be bought and fitted.
