I'm looking for a good story based MMO, for now, I'm stuck with RuneScape. Just kinda..post your suggestions. I've heard that Guild Wars has an ok story, haven't heard about WoW though...RS is just...kinda boring now, after a year.
I have a problem....I don't play enough. Even though I'm usually on my comp playing RuneScape.
To be honest I mostly look for a game that give me what I want, from quest, items, characters, customization, etc.. For me the game has to keep my attention too. Story wise I'm a noob . I'm finding AO to be interesting, since it is the main game I play. I'm trying out Silkroad, Martial Heroes, and Deicide these are free to play games. I here Flyff is good and will try also. The 4 free 2 play games that I listed some were recommended and some I just came across their story line seems to be ok, so give one or all try.
I'd have to say AO. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of threads on the official forums as well as movies and books pertaining to the lore of Rubi-Ka, the Shadowlands, and the AO universe as a whole
As far as a story based rpg goes I think your best bet right now would be Guild Wars. WoW doesn't really have a storyline that you play through, but rather random quests that kinda sorta relate to the main storyline of the game. FFXI when it first came out had a sweet storyline, but ummm....yah.....don't play that game.

Ironically, Shadowbane has the best, most consistent backstory of any online game I have played. Of course, Shadowbane is not a successful game, but it was innovative, and is now free to play.
If you love High Fantasy then You would probably like Everquest original as it has a rich backstory and has even inspired writers to pen full novels about their adventures there.
If you like Sci fi then Anarchy Online offers much in the way of roleplay and storyline as the struggle between the Oppressive corporation Omni-Tek and the Rebel clans rages on and now Aliens have come to invade Rubi Ka as well.
There is of course Star Wars Galaxies if you are looking to roleplay as a shifty smuggler or a wise jedi you could certainly find some entertainment there. the game is in sort of a transitional period and suffers from low numbers of players but make a character on Bria or ahazi and you should do fine.
If you are truly a roleplayer then the mechanics of a game or the storyline behind it should never be enough to stop you. I play AO right now and I roleplay whether other people like it or not. I find the game entertaining and exciting and to top it all off its free to play.

I played WoW without ever having played Warcraft 1 to 3, and must agree the story line was not stressed at all. I read all the books I found lying around in the game, but never had any use for any of it. It might as well have been plucked from out of the air. Part of what left me disenchanted with WoW.
So it seems like Anarchy Online has one of the best stories from all the posts I've seen...WoW it seems just...doesn't add up story wise. FFXI has a good story, but the game sucks according to a particular post. Although the Warcrafts 1-3 sounds like they all have good stories...hmmm. Keep the posting going, this is starting to look like a good forum

Most stories in these MMOs are not clear when you play the game. Peoples say EQ. Well, EQ has a wonderful story, when you check it out on the net, but in game? Nope. WoW story is slightly more detailed in game, but not much more.
For a REAL story, you can play City of Villains or City of Heroes, the story is there for you to read, no need to figure which NPC to hail and say which command or press which obscure button as in EQ or WoW. The story is pretty hard to miss in CoH/CoV, unless you don't want to read it and willingly miss it. But it come, it is neat, it is nice, it has me react a few times.
Peoples saying WoW or EQ are prolly honest in their blindness, but these games story are unaccessible, hard to get, easy to lose, you may even do a few levels with not even 1 hint of a story in these games. Really, in a game such as CoH/CoV, the stories are there and they are very nice and entertaining. Not to mention that YOU are part of the story in CoH/CoV, a NPC might drop a line such as: "I certainly hope that we don't stumble upon someone such as Stateman or Anofalye!" NPC2: "Why do you have to say it! See Anofalye is over us, damn you!" And the battle start!
Again, on the Design level, CoH/CoV is at least 5 years if not 10 in advance over their competitors.

Why do you say that CoH/CoV is 5-10 years ahead of their competitors, or do you just mean story wise? I ask only because gameplay wise, most games are on a pretty equal level. I'm just wanting clarification here.

But its FINAL FANTASY!!!!
Nuff Said.
The main reason FFXI has a good story is because it has to have a good story. It must live up to the Final Fantasy legacy of greatness, but it drove itself away from what made Final Fantasy great, which is making you feel like you were affected in the real world by whatever happened. Don't get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy games in general. Hell, I'm getting FFXII when it comes out on October 31. Just remember, one person thinking a game is good does not make it good, but when a multitude (I'm going to say 1 million or more) say its good, it has market appeal, but for a game to be remarkable, everybody who has ever played has to say that it is one of the greatest games they have ever played. You can quote me on that if you like. Just remember to put a hyphen then my name after the quote.

Go for WOW...it's an excellent game. It's true what was mentioned is that it's best to play Warcraft3, before WOW,thats only if you want to understand a little bit of the story,at the beginning of the game.Thing is as you go through the game later on there is not much of a story to go by.
Lineage 2! I'd say Lineage 2 since they got the new things on C4 it has became very interesting!!! Fishing... Is new and is great More Quests More Monster New Areas. Dual Weapons!! Mount on Dreagons and controll where you wanna go instead of it controlling it self. More interesting than World Of warcraft all though WoW is the most popular MMO at the moment. It bassicly is Cartoony Graphics... I hate it!!! I am Lineage all my life! I play Lineage 1 got to the max lvl. And now on L2 I am lvl 79! I OWN!!!
Just becuase a game has a lot of story events does not mean it necessarily has a good story. I have never actually played lienage 2, so I can't really judge it. Maybe other people can, but not me. I was just putting out some advice for everybody. Twists and turns a good story does not make. Case and point, the movie Aeon Flux. Twists and turns everywhere, bad story, bad movie.

Keep your eyes on Guild Wars: Nightfall, its storyline created by a new guy hired by Arenanet to write for them (you might have heard of him if you're into RPG), Jeff Grub, author and writer of more than a dozen novels using including warcraft, starcraft, dragonlance, forgotton realms, star wars and was part of TSR when he was working behind D&D. He also worked with Marvel Universe, WoW, Starcraft, Magic the Gathering, to replace Jess Elbow (If I remember correctly) who had created the storyline for Guild Wars Chapter 1 and 2. They also revealed Grubb is working on Chapter 4, already underway. Meanwhile, Jess Elbow is working with Flying Labs on a new MMORPG called Pirates of the Burning Seas.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
Its gotta be Guild wars! it has seperate missions for storys, cut scenes with drama as good as East Enders. When i went through the story for the first time i got lost in its depth and variety of characters. Death, Betrail, Murder and Bitch fights!

When you start with humans "You have to the defend the kingdom."
dont play wow.
Starwars Galaxies, An Empier Diveded, That's what it says on my box anyway.
First of all, wow is a loot base game, which sucks totaly.
The world is so smal, on lvl 60 you are either in instacnes or in like 2 other non instancing areas.
PvP last for 2 sec, its cheeper to die then use a potion.
On lvl 60 you end up doing the same things over and over again raiding and bg.
