Open BETA's Consigned to the Past ?

Been playing a few open beta's lately and one common thing I have found is that by the time they are over the game seems to have not enough left to keep a large majority of players to p2p and the population is smashed.

It seems to me now that most games have just a few months content, and that really hardcore players (which I am not) can exhaust that content way too fast.

I have noticed a few games recently have skipped OB all together and gone

  • Closed BETA
  • Closed BETA keys for Pre-order
  • Pay to Play - Commercial.

I  wonder if we have seen the end (or will soon see the end of open BETA phases all together ?

Open beta is used for stress testing, Companies would be stupid to eliminate it. You dont want your servers to overload and crash on launch.. well some people dont, blizzard didnt care.

I do agree preorder should get into closed beta automatically if they preorder early enough, but i dislike those website likefileplanet that sell beta slots.

Most smart games will have a very short open beta period, so they can get an idea of what their servers can handle.

Every mmorpg should have a open beta stress test. It would be a shame if companies would not do that anymore as there is nothing worse then starting a new mmorpg and the servers are constantly crashing. Pre-Sell beta Keys are totally ok in my eyes.

So far you've described Archlord in all three steps.

Well it's not the open betas fault. It's this steaming pile of wreckage that keeps being washed ashore on our western coasts called Teh AZN mmorpg.  There seems to be more and more of them it seems.

You dont need open beta anymore to stress test a MMORPG or client. You need basic phases of beta , from Phase 1 to test certain systems in stages, then Phase 2 to test basic features , updates and such and Finally phase 3 which is just testing the final product.

Software , QAs , and other stuff can fully test the stress of the server. I think ya should have to pay for something to show support for the game. 5.00 isnt much to help test out something ya like or think ya gonna buy.

Fileplanet has a great backbone network, its not a bad idea to use them, I get 300 kbs from download from them. And its only 6.00 a month to be a member , they always got great demos or betas going on.
