LOTRO is gonna flop. Might as well call it DDO2.

Just to follow up on a few threads on the LOTR forums they say instancing will be between 10%-20%. On the last video the guy in it says 15%.

Personally my doubt with the game(even though i'm looking forward to it) is Turbine. We'll see soon enough.

Actually..... you can be an orc... just not as a character.  Players can play as monsters, just on a temporary basis.  You can't play an "orc" and level him up.... but you can BE an orc and kill players as one if you want to...

Might want to read up on the latest info on the official site and forums...  While I still thnk Turbine is perfectly capable of making this into a total dud I'm keeping an open mind.  I won a beta slot so I'll get to see first hand whether it's going to be worth a darn or not.  Watch for my review once the NDA gets lifted ;)  I promise to be nothing but brutally honest :)

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

See, MEO was supposed to be 100% open. Any race, any faction, anything. The alignment was supposed to play a HUGE role in how the game was played, just as it does in the Books. But, now that Turbine bought it and changed it over to LoTR:O the game officially became junk.

I remember reading a 10 page article about it in a 2002 edition of Computer Gaming Magazine. I was hyped as hell about it and had my thing here set up to send me updates. Then it changed to LoTR:O and I cancled those newletters.

All of the LOTR fans are waiting to annhilate Turbine once they screw up with this one.
Turbine should have known what kind of pressure they would be under if they took on another strong title.
They have very bad luck rolling the dice on games they make.

Is this meant to be a 'play on words'? One ring to rule them all? One game to > them all?

Turbine will need to have done LOTR justice,or else LOTR will do justice upon Turbine. Only time will tell.

With Turbine having such a paramount task with Lord of the Rings, if they do not deliever what people are expecting, I'm going to say it's a safe bet to say they will file for Chapter 13.

I don't understand why a company will give themselves such a huge task with taking on such mega names like D&D, LOTR, Conan, etc.

Lets all hope they will deliever.

I appreciate your enthusiasm.  However, I want to play as an Orc and slaughter Hobbits as a career.  I also would have liked to be able to make war against dwarves as an elf for example.  I have read the arguments against this playstyle, and they make me want to vomit.  These things did happen in Middle Earth.  Why can't I do them as well?  Its unfortunate that such a grand avenue is blocked off.  But I am only one person, or am I?

because there is a HUGE potential customer base in these names, lot of $$$ to gain if they manage to make it work, and thats what companies are all about. Its a big risk with big prizes. Turbine failed completely with D&D and now they play Rich&Poor with LOTR.

But i doubt that LOTRO can go as bad as D&D went.
    1. Turbine cant afford another failure.
    2. LOTRO is clearly targeted to more younger audience than those picky D&D vets, kids settle for less because theyre not that critical.
    3. Theres propably million legolas, gandalf, frodo -wannabees lined up for launch.

I think the only cool way they could put in PvP if it was Realm Vs. Realm sort of thing...

i dont know...i have a big hunch that LOTRO will die.

The character creation and gameplay video I saw pretty much killed any hope I had for this game to succeed.  I used to love Turbine as a company, and thought that with their creative genius that they could do anything.  After watching the video though, I saw nothing but disappointment.  I think I'm done completely with Turbine's products.  Their original team is gone, and they were what made the company good in the past.

The orginal Asheron's Call was by far Turbines greatest achievement, it was fresh and daring, they didn't mind doing things that we're fairly important in terms of gameplay and they were ALWAYS fixing this and that trying to get some balance for both PvP and PvE.

Everything they did after AC1 was just boring and fairly unoriginal, who wants to play a "MASSIVE" multiplayer online game in an instance with 5 other people?

I will however save my reservations for LoTRO until after I give it a go  But Turbine had better try and do something different with this one.

  • SheistaSheista Member UncommonPosts: 1,203
My thoughts exactly.  The original team that created Asheron's Call were geniuses of their time.  They were just some college guys that wanted to make an MMO.  They ended up being discovered by Microsoft, got access to some technology they'd never seen before because of Microsoft, and then made a great game the way -they- wanted it.  They were gamers like the rest of us.

Now, I feel that the team is made up of people who make the games because it's their job to do so.  It doesn't feel like it's their passion like it once was.  The original creators of AC are gone, and with them went the creativity.

I know the most recent video was disappionting, but the game isn't even out. Give it some time before we flame it to death. Oh, what the hell!

After how they slaughtered and mutilated only D&D mmo. The MMO that was most likely to be a super hit.
Probably the most fail safe franchise for MMOs ever, and they managed to botch it....

How can you expect anything good from such company?

The big fault with LotR I find is that you can only play the good side. I mean the perfect setting of good & evil for players and they took half of it out. Its a shame.

Age of Conan may be pretty good.

Vanguard is pretty much a repeat of what what we have. It will not do as well as they are hyping it. Kill task and raids.

LotRs.....? Well, It has the "potential" to do well but then so did DDO. Looking at the track record of Turbine I wouldn't get to excited yet. They have struck out everytime.

    • AC - was great but they let it die
    • AC2 so bad/broken they shut it down
    • DDO - so off the mark its hardly an MMORPG

I hope its something fresh and new but I have no confidence in them as a company.
