Content IDs?

in Final Fantasy XI
Im somewhat confused as to the way Content Ids work. I'm really not interested in investing 13 dollars into a content id considering I want to test this game charge-free for a little while. Do i have to pay additional money to get a content id, or is my suscription fee determined based on the amount of Content Ids i have?

    If you're just buying the game, you have a 30 day free trial. In which you can cancel if you so decided you don't like ffxi and not get billed.

    Content ID's are what your characters are stored on. Your first content ID is $12.99/month and each additional is another $1.00/month.

    If you play then decide to quit, Only cancel your content ID's since they're what you're paying for. Nothing else needs to be canceled.
