The upcoming MMOs look like more of the same...and I'm thinking they are going to flop because of it... time will tell.

They have not been gaining subscribers as fast as they used to.  Also, new servers haven't been popping up as frequently as before.  This tells me that probably they are reaching their peak and a possible decline is imminent.

I do agree with some other posters that a good percentage of that 7 million are gold farmers.  For every one they catch and ban, more just pop up as they just subscribe under different account.

From my own experience, I know a lot of people who were playing WoW but have since quit or cancelled.  Some of my online friends and coworkers have moved on, so between those two places about 20 people not playing anymore.  I know 20 seems pitiful in comparison to 7 million, but word of mouth can be a killer.  As of right now I would not recommend WoW to someone who never played it.

Burning Crusade probably will not help as much as they think.  It's looking to be the same World of Raidcraft that the 60 game is today.  More raid dungeons, more reputation grinding, etc.  The hardcore players will hit 70 within a month and begin whining they are bored while the more casuals complain there is nothing to do but raid and rep grind.

The game that will kill WoW is WoW Itself.

I found this rather amusing. Only reason? And the new crop of suck ass games coming out is supposed to be competition? Competition enough to dent a 7 million playerbase?

    Only reason....lol.

Ok so if half the player base was gold farmers .....they would still be blowing away every game on the market. They would still have a 3.5 million player base that any company would die for. Of course we know the gold farmer % is no where near half, so...................

Grats Blizzard managed to make a lot of sales.

This probably means their game should be accoladed for its originality and contribution to the MMORPG genre.

I agree, WoW at some point will self destruct.

I wouldn't however say that I won't recommend this game to anyone (especially after having played it 14 months myself)  but I would only recommend this game to people who are just trying out thier first mmo, and be sure to tell them that this is the best begginer mmo out there and when they get bored with it's linear gameplay that other games only get better. WoW was dissapointing in the end game for me and I'm sure many others who can not spend hours upon countless hours grinding, either faction, PvP, or dungeons. I'm not bitter about this game but like I said, when I finally came to the realization that end game was what it was, I had to quit.

::::18:: this is a funny post...do you really think wow needs any more players or servers? do you think all these people are just going to give up playing mmorpg's? or do you think they are going to find a new game?

and if so what game? once TBC releases you will see alot of people coming back to the game, weather you like it or not. i also disagree with you that it will be the same after the expansion.

the pvp honor system will be more casual friendly, raids being smaller will allow for more people/guilds to run them.

i also know alot of people who have quit wow but that makes absolutely no difference at all, wow is not going anywhere no matter how much you think it sucks or how much you like the game you play.

there is no other mainstream game that comes close and i don't see any game in development that can take alot of subscribers away from wow.

The game that will kill WoW is WoW Itself.

i don't think so, a game must come along to pull those subscribers away. everquest is a great example of this, people played everquest for years..they quit, then came back...quit, then came back.

it took wow being released to really pull alot of subscribers away from that game and it is still one of the most populated mmorpg's out there.

i think it will be a really long time before wow gets to that point, its going to take a game that is not only mainstream like wow is but has all the things wow has and more, much more.

i don't see any game in development at all that can do that, i could be wrong but if history repeats itself wow is going to be the mmorpg giant for a long time.

lol, WoW will be around for along time, whether we like it or not. They found out how to get people stuck on their games, and they're damn good at it. I give them props for pulling of the best games of the history of PC gaming. They deserve all 6-7 million of their subscriptions.

WaR Will Replace WoW When It Comes Out
  • malzarmalzar Member Posts: 15

Why is it 24,99$ now. I have seen it at Future shop for that low price. Looks like BC wont have original game in it for 40$. Overpopulated with a gold market, WoW is a good game to play but for a short period. After that u pass to something else. Like we all do with every games out there..

When theres a price drop. theres something to wonder whats going on. A compagny would never lower its price if it sells good.

Also, they are having trials now. Thats another sign WoW is getting boring and people stop liking it. Just take a look at AO. they let u play for free and give u the xpack for 9,95$ They look deseperated.. or whatever..

Population is growing but not with current players but new players who will quit like we all did but in a later time..

As many said, I just cant wait to have another mmo being release that is solid enough to stand in front of WoW. People will just realize how dumb Blizz is taking players as morons..

This day, is going to be so great. Im gonna laugh so bad

Well I used to say that I never was affected by botters and such but considering I just had one of my accounts hacked and the main on the account deleted I am starting to change my mind about the whole topic.   Of course just because my account was hacked doesn't mean botters had anything to do with it but you get the drift.

That being said in over a year that I have played WoW I have yet to run into anyone that I thought was botting.  And other than the occasional ninja I haven't had that many problems up until my account was hacked.

Anyway I digress....   I don't think WoW is losing many people yet.   Even of the low population servers there usually always seems to be a fair number of people to group with.   Now once WAR, LOTRO and V:SOH comes out that may change.  But then again if Blizzard doesn't release BC xpack soon they are going to really start having issues I think.
