KOTOR Online

I am making a poll for the development of KOTOR online, I posted the possibility of it in the open BETA forum and it seems like a popular idea. What I want to do is see what you guys think the pros or cons might be and how many people would play it. Below is my original post, plz vote!

After the series of unfortunate events that occured in SWG the gaming community has been calling for a new starwars MMO. What I don't understand is why there arn't any companies that are jumping all over this potential 1mill+ subscriber MMO, just a thought...

It sounds like a fine idea.  I wouldn't play, but I think my husband and quite a few people I know would.

I vote for the 5th option "Yes but only if its P2P". I can't stand 10 year olds running around in my games.

There is quite a comprehensive thread on this running in the SWG boards....

For my part..... Im from the school of thought that goes something like, "jedis ruined SWG" or at the very least "the way Jedis were implemented ruined SWG". Which I know is a controversial PoV but.....

So Im less than "aroused" at the prospect of KOTOR online, but I think the main reason for that is Im still so let down by SWG Im begining to think Ill never get over it....

    O the humanity.....

You really think P2P reduces their numbers? Just look at WoWs community

in any case, if they can keep the style that made KOTOR great alive, absolutely

I KNOW it decreases their numbers... Look at games like Runescape... Sure MORE people play WoW, but a much larger percentage per game play the F2P crap, because it doesn't require mommy's credit card.

KOTORs are great single player games with great world and story, but it wouldn't work as multiplayer game. It could be entertaining to play story once (=quests) or couple times, but after that it would be just same old grind.

I cant remember who wrote it.... But I read an article where a Dev was lamenting that the greates challenge facing MMO Devs was the transition from single player to MMO centric gamer in the players mind and how it affected their expectations of their role in the world. *phew heavy stuff*

But he was basically saying :

In single player games, especially one like KOTOR, the player is the omnipotent hero who will eventually conquer all content in the game. Where as in an MMO the player enters a world where every single player is expecting to be as "uber" as they were in relation to the environment as they have been used to.

Of course when your environment is a bunch of people who all expect to be dominating their environment.... well you get the picture.

So given that Jedi are pwners even among pwners, (I mean even Chuck Norris would struggle against Darth Vader), the expectation of pwnership can scarcely be met..... ergo the experience of playing the game will almost never meet expectations

Only if it can be as mind-numingly boring as the previous KOTOR games.

No, that's set in the time frame of the original Star Wars books. KOTOR is set centuries before then, during and after the war of the Sith. It would make for an excellent opportunity for realm vs realm pvp, since there were no shortage of men and women on either side of the rift.

In terms of Jedi, in SWG you have lord vader and the emperor on one side, luke and a few other random guys popping up out of nowhere on the other. In KOTOR you have the entire, mostly undiminished jedi council vs the ranks of the sith, who had an academy of their own.

I voted yes for a good game
and no to playing it. I play wow at the moment and Warhammer is coming out in a year or so but Im engaged to my mmo's already.

Im all for great mmo's and I loved playing Kotor.

P2P games are easily better than free games. I mean look at guildwars ::::05:: P2P also keeps the companies involved in improving the game. Look at the content of wow and the content of GW....yeah enuf said.

One of my biggest complaints with SWG and something I would like to see drastically different in a Kotor mmo is class variety. I have no problems with Jedi but they dont have to be the ultimate PWN ALL class. There should be a variety of classes that fits each persons unique playstyle(more than wow, slightly less than daoc).

    just my 2 adena

If the KOTOR MMO used the same leveling system and skill system as the single player KOTOR, than yes it would be awsome.

I could be wrong but I believe it was Richard Bartle that said that Razorback...

His theory is is that people are expecting to be the 'hero' and 'win' the game and in a MMOG that never happens...so the poor gamer wanders around in cyberspace, like a digital wraith, floating from MMOG to MMOG, contantly looking for closer and to 'win' the game.

remove the jedi in SWG and bring them to kotor online.

or at least make em permadeath :

to bad if lag killed you

you loose all your RL belonging

     and possibly your first born

SWG was better off without jedi.

What makes people thing a KOTOR MMO would turn out ay different the SWG?  Lucas Arts ultimately owns Star Wars and therefore they are the ones ultimately calling the shots.  Why would they steer a KOTOR game in a different direction then they sent SWG?

Anyone can learn from their mistakes, and it was not Lucasarts' fault that SWG turned out the way it did. Their only mistake was in letting SOE get their hands on the title. If Lucas hands the reins over to someone dedicated enough to make the cut, it would have huge potential. As to why? simple, they lost current and potential customers due to SOE's mistakes. Money is the primary incentive for any business

Everyone would be a Jedi, EXACTLY like SWG. Just because it takes place 4,000 years beforehand doesn't change a damn thing. If anything, it's worse, because there is substantially less material to draw from in the KOTOR era of the Star Wars universe.

Personally, I would like to see a well-made Star Wars MMO in the era of Star Wars history we all know and love. Jedi would unavailable to players, removing a fatal flaw of SWG- the alpha class. Jedi would be NPC's only. Perhaps even the pre-Empire golden age of the Republic, when Palpatine was still just a senator and the Sith were only beginning to stir again.

Then in my opinion and more like me than there are against, would think that the game would suck. Who wants to live in the Star Wars Universe and not be the most special thing in the galaxie...Jedi/Sith. Star Wars whether you like it or not is about the Force. Most people want to be a force user, enough said. Whether it is a Jedi, Sith, or somebody like Kyle Katarn, people want the awsome powers of the force. The real problem with Alpha classes is PvP, not the alpha class itself. PvPers like competition and maxing out their characters and smack talking and etc, so they make having an Alpha class a no no. PvEer's and Roleplayers will play the Jedi or Sith or whatever as intended in the lore and could accept being defeated in PvP, when it happens.

Take away PvP as the main goal of the game and you end up with a better game. Just add NPC Jedi and Sith and their armies as our PvP type gameplay like DAOC did with their CO-OP servers and I would be happy.

Hmmm Ewoks, Jar Jar Binks, Guido shot first…

NGE is very much in keeping with the type of entertainment Lucasarts wants to sell.  If they ever get involved in another MMO expect it to be more like the new SWG then the old.

am sure if SoE/LA could foresee(though i think a couple of their devs knew it would happen) the fiasco over the jedis in SWG.

They would have gone with a KOTOR like  mmorpg rather then episode 4-5 period.

Might still be a good idea.Give everyone the chance to be a jedi and grind to be a master. At least it will not kill the story and make the SW fans  happy.
