A telletubby with a sword would be deadly too, but believable? No. I mean if I spend 10-20 hours a week fighting, killing etc, then would I really look all prissy? No, I'd have scars and dirt and blood. Hence the idea of game immersion, when I look like I just stepped out of a salon where I got a manicure its not really believable nor enjoyable.

Yes well thats your opinion and you've given it enough times in this thread already without having to repeat it. Yes there are some feminime anime chars but so what......you moaning about it isnt going to change a thing.
yes, if you run around through forest killing with bow/arrow and daggers, you will look slim and tone. because those things don't build muscle mass, they increase coordination and endurance. and whimpy doesn't mean gay, especially in an elf's case. all elves are feminine compared to humans. just like orcs and dwarves are masculine compared to humans. but you don't call orc and dwarf women dykes, do you?
I didnt say anything about muscles, you saying elves never get hit when adventuring? I mean cmon. Just because they use a bow doesnt mean they have to look feminine. Im not even talking about elves anyway, I dunno why people keep bringing this up. My father in law runs around in the forest killing things with a bow and he doesnt get mistaken for an elf nor is he slim.
"When you're in prison, dont be no ones bitch, its bad for you..."
Exactly.......some people just dont understand thats the way the characters are meant to be....i mean, come on, meh, just get used to it, no ones gonna change the way the races look just because you think they look too "feminine" or "gay".

You have a great idea here! We should start posting on some EQ2 boards, or whatever games you're looking forward to, about this. If enough of us post, maybe the devs will listen and create the characters so they look real and have dynamic changes to their appearance. Like you mentioned when you come out of a battle, it would be so cool if your character had scars and injuries for a while, until you healed. Awesome . . .
Actually I think EQ2 has done a good job with the characters. I have nothing but praise for them so far as long as the gameplay is good. But honestly I was just looking to see if I was the only one with this opinion, I'm not trying to change the world.
"When you're in prison, dont be no ones bitch, its bad for you..."
Personally I love playing dexterous, rogueish characters so elves, dark elves etc. all appeal to me. I run the gammut (sp?) though and enjoy a big brute as well.
That being said...
I have an intense personal distaste for some of the "extreme" anime style graphics out there. Some of them can detract so much from my gameplay enjoyment and sense of immersion that I now refuse to even play certain games. To purchase them in my mind would only support their continued existence which to me is not something I wish to see. Now by extreme I mean the aforementioned ultra-fem male characters, the overly colourful graphics and the wide-eyed ultra-expressive faces. Toned down anime I can handle and since Lineage 2 to me is NOT an extreme example I will be certain to give it a chance.
This is all personal taste however so no need to get all up in a bunch over it like some of you are here.
Scars and dirt arent the only thing that effects usually brutish people too look brutish. 1. Your childhood, usually a personality you had will be expressed someway into your face, sort of sad, angry, etc, has something to do with muscles, muscle memory? I dunno.
2. Experiences, being tanned, being in a certain region, as well as scars and the sort would fall in that category.
3. Why is anyone coming to this thread saying, lets just stop arguing, theres no point, it'll server no meaning, blah blah blah. Now if these people arent interested in debating the fact, they can go elsewhere, I'm pretty sure no one here is an x-man using mind control on you or some crap.

Yeh i agree it is, but when people start saying stuff like "Im sure your gay" and "I will accept im a homophobe when you accept your straight" the topics gonna go to hell.
I am giving everyone 1 last chance to clean this thread up, knock off the gay talk and stick to the topic before i lock it. The topic is a good one so stick with it.

Original topic: "Anyone else sick of these gay looking anime characters in many of the MMORPG's? Malkavian, please help me understand how this topic is a good one. It starts off with "gay talk" and builds from there.

Admittedly the post itself is ridiculous and offensive but I do think this topic has merit.
I think ideally a MMORPG should allow you a spectrum of character models to choose from including both "masculine" and "feminine" males and females. Graphical restraints certainly come in to play and I am understanding of that. I also understand that in a game like L2 you DO have the choice of playing masculine males if you were to play a dwarf/orc vs. the elf male models which are extremely feminine in my mind. They are so extreme actually that I had to double check if I chose male when I created my dark elf.
I guess the question boils down to whether anime creators want to reach fans like myself (a non-anime fan) or not?
If my only choice is to play an overtly feminine male I probably won't unless the gameplay is too fun to pass on. I have NOTHING against feminine males in real life (or homosexuality for that matter) but when I play a MMORPG I like to immerse myself in the character I am playing and like real life I enjoy and embrace masculine qualities (with no shame towards having feminine ones as well). I have read studies that suggest Asian culture has lead to a guilt-association towards being "male" along the lines of the "white-male" guilt many of us experience in North America and wonder if this is a symptom of that displayed through anime. This is purely speculation on my part and please don't read too much in to that.
Anyway for the exact reasons I don't play females in these games I don't want to be forced to play feminine males. I can't properly immerse myself in to the mind set of such characters since I simply can't envision myself in that role. I CAN understand and can even put myself in to the role of a lithe dextrous rogueish character like Legolas, likewise I can understand and immerse myself in to a brutish character like Conan....
I can't however understand or immerse myself in to a character that looks like they have never done manual labour in their life, could pass as a pampered movie or rock star just stepping out of a salon with their hair flared out, and who chooses to wear fancy, exotic silks in to battle. This is not something that appeals to me.
So again, it all boils down to whether anime-style games want to win people like me over or not. If they are happy as things are, hey more power to them. I understand that position and offered my reasons so that they can understand mine.
That was a great post with good points JAttractive. Something to keep in mind though is that Anime is a very diverse art style and by no means do all male anime characters appear feminine. Lineage 2 is only one style of anime and the elves are only one aspect of that style.
Lineage 2 has taken elves and presented them as they are often depicted in fantasy as lithe, beatiful, and deadly with their speed. The human males on the other hand dont appear feminine to me, though they do appear young and less hardened then men from something like Conan.
I agree that it would have been nice for a larger range of customization and the option for that more "hardened" masculine look for the humans but I cant see that being applied to the elves or dark elves.
