They completely changed the game.
I played after the change unfortounatly(sp?) but I have to say that it blew. I liked it till I started looking for resources about the game and kept running into old stuff. After doing a bit of research on what it used to be, I totally lost intrest. It really seemed that it was a great game, but they completely botched it up.
CU referes to the Combat Upgrade. In other words, they totally f'd up combat and made it brainless.
I don't know what NG stands for, but it's what made all the classes and skills vanish and turn into that screwed up leveling system they have now.
A Work in Progress.

CU (Combat Upgrade) was combat upgrade before NGE (New Game Enchancement). Yes, they have actually upgrade combat system 2 times in 3 years. CU added levels and removed two damage pools (mind, action). CU was still pretty playable. NGE changed game to very bad first person shooter and removed skill based system. SWG is now totally different kind game. It used to be free world, where you can choose your characters skills and mix them without levels or artificial classes. Now it is very bad copy from WoW that have somekind "first person shooter" combat system (far away from real first persons shooter like Battlefield or Counter Strike).
My recommendation: don't waste your money or time.

Worse it was actually twice in 12 months. The cu was known to everyone for a long time it was coming but nge was just dropped on us. SoE believe the path to dominance of the market is to change the combat system every few months with minimal testing. Lose all there veterans and start again to recruit.
I played for over 2 years and i wouldn't advise anyoen to buy the game now.

You're not allowed to discuss it. It's illegal.

I played SWG since it launched, the greatest MMO pre NGE (I thought the CU was fine).
Anyways, they changed the whole system to SWG 3 times in total, 2 very big ones, the Combat Upgrade, then the New Game Enhancements. It basically turned original SWG:
-Best PvPing
-Awesome player Economy
-Awesome Profession system
-Best MMO experiences ive ever had
Into SWG/WoW. It use to be with Professions, and being able to dabble in many, like be a Tera Kasi Master and a Combat Medic, or Droid Engineer, it was very fun and customizable, did i say the PvP was awesome?
Now its lvl based...Woopie. When they released the CU, SWG lost a big chunk of there community, when they released the NGE, they all almost everyone who didnt leave for WoW.
My guild on Bloodfin, DREAD (AXIS) was up to 200 members, and when the CU came, many head to WoW for a bit. Before the NGE hit, they ALL moved to WoW and so did i. That game is dead and is never going to be good again. I move where the PvP goes, and when they ruined a great, innovating MMO, they paid for it.
Now there are classes, 6 or so, and there releasing these expertise trees, i guess like WoWs talent system. SWG is filled with a bunch of no name non factors who think there the shit because there a Jedi, when Eldar Jedi (people who got jedi before the NGE) had to work DAMN hard to get theres, which is why all the meta pvpers left.
SWGs economy is shit, no longer skill based, lvl based, gear based...Its shit, basically Star Wars version of WoW.
I still play SWG today (been playing since launch) and still find the game alot of fun. Even after the changes, SWG still has alot of stuff that other MMO's on the market don't come close to. There is a free trial at www.tryswg.com that will give you a brief introduction to the game and give you a feel of how it works.
Also, to those that haven't caught up yet, the twitch combat is no longer the only choice available to you. You now have the option of target lock and autofire (pre-nge type combat) as well as the twitch combat. You can even go halfway between the two.
==================================================
YAY, you now have option of target lock and autofire!!! i'm getting back to my good old teras kasi/swordsman, OH, wait, there is no teras kasi or swordsman anymore, right? oh, well, i'll go back to all the nice and chatty people i met, always willing to help, or just plain chat for fun... oh, wait, they also left the game? LOL, the reason they still havent reroled SWG is that some people, like you are still playing it!
let me see:
proffesions you are now able to have in SWG/NGE (make just 1 choice):
Spy
Entertainer
Trader
Medic
Officer
Smuggler
Commando
Bounty Hunter (who doesn't really do bounty hunting)
Jedi
Profesions in original SWG, and SWG/CU:
Entertainer
Image Designer
Musician
Dancer
Artisan
Weaponcrafter
Armorcrafter
Arhitect
Droid Engineer
Shipwright (added with Jump TO lightspeed)
Pilot (3 different types. added with JTL)
Chef
Tailor
Merchant
Brawler
Teras Kasi
Swordsman
Fencer
Pikeman
Marksman
Rifleman
Carabineer
Pistoleer
Commando
Bounty Hunter
Smuggler
Medic
Combat medic
Doctor
Bio-engineer
Scout
Ranger
Politician (if you wanna have player run town, you need to have politician)
Jedi (if you really put in lotsa of hard work to become one)
I most probably even missed some proffesions, since i stopped playing bit after CU came, and came back, just in time to see NGE (biggest mistake i ever made)...
Also, difference is that before CU, you didn't have levels, and you could mix any proffesions you feel like mixing, as long as you don't go over preset 250 skill points you can spend on skills... if you get bored, you could drop some skills and learn other ones... i ussually changed all of my skills once a month to something new, untill i finnaly settled with teras kasi/bounty hunter, so i can hunt Jedi... Player jedi, which was the best fun i had in games ever.
now (NGE), you choose your class right away, stick to it, level it, and pvp is on the "OMG a commando, run for the hills" basis... unless you are spy, but even than, it's on "OMG a BH, run for the hills" basis...
Maybe it's not really a bad game for someone who starts it now, but compared to what have it been, super mario bros looks really SUPERb....
