Ryzom Ring - OMG Forget other MMO's. This is the answer!

Tonight I tried the Ryzom Ring for the first time. I will be very honest and say I didn't think Nevrax could pull it off. They did though and in a grand way.

I only tried it for about 30 minutes but in that time I was able to produce the following:

I put a npc on a map. When the player approaches the npc he yells "Don't go by the water, they will kill you!", followed by a scared emote. I put a bandit camp by the water and a pack of gingos (really mean dogs) a bit away. I then set it up so that when the player went near the water, the gingos went after the bandits and killed them all.

I am still amazed at what this thing can do. No longer can people (such as myself) bitch about the lack of content in Ryzom. The players have the tools and it's really up to them to make the game what it should be.

As their slogan says "Power to the Players"!!!

Don't be so sure. I hear Nevrax has an update in the works called the "New Ring Edition".

sounds good. Does it use any programming language?

I haven't yet tried it myself, but you can download the Ryzom Ring manual (.pdf) from the SoR site.

Can you imagine the mess that the players of this game are going to create with this tool. Great idea, not sure if it works with the current MMORPG community mindset.

There are three levels of submission. Read the guidelines.

Ryzom Ring might revolutionize MMO's. Isn't it every DM's dream to be able to create their own 3d MMO content? I haven't decided whether or not to resub to Ryzom. Even with Ring it's missing some very important aspects to me. I do love these smaller companies like Nevrax and CCP who try to improve my hobby though. I so badly hope they succeed and get out from under their financial woes.

That's the really amazing part, there is no programming. You pick items and put them on a map. You then pick choices from properties menus to dictate the behavior.

So for example you would create a dialog spot and in the properties put in "Don't go there!". Then you would create a npc and in setup an event that says "when npc a is clicked" "activate dialog a".

That would cause the npc to say "Don't go there!" when a player goes to talk to it.

I think he means the "New Ring Enhancements"

a reference to the NGE in $OE's Star Wars Fallacies game

looking at the manual it looks very much like a world editor which is a good thing. My concern with having no programming is that there could be a lack of depth but it seems to have triggers and that so I'm pretty pleased about that.

The manual doesn't really too you much to be honest. I am hoping that when it goes live and out of beta they offer a free trial for a month for anyone.

I'd rather have them balancing classes first, mostly ranged.
Also some new skills for melee & ranged would be nice because ryzom's population is 100% mage.

(Oh and yes, i've tried ring)

    you
have to remember that the aim of this tool is to be accessible to ANYONE, not
just those with programming back ground.

And A.F.A.I.C.T there is scripting. If not in beta, then later.

I don’t know why you wish to Program, when the game is already made...
Scripting on the other hand... creates scenarios.

Ryzom has always suffered from stagnation. Lack of new missions and lack of new areas. It's why the game never got the population it needed. The Ring will change that.

There aren't any classes in Ryzom.  You can freely learn any skill.  The problem is that magic, past a certain level, is rather out of whack (despite some balancing) with other combat approaches.

Thats what I am referring to really as programming, the scripting. I mean had it just be a place and place, it wouldn't have had much depth.

Different strokes for different folks, IMO.

While this is pretty "revolutionary", it sounds very niche (does that word get used a lot lately, or what?) to me. I do like how Ryzom is skill based, though.

Of course it is niche but that doesn't mean that it can't be successful. Just look at NWN, the prime example of a game that came complete with toolset (to make your own game content), server and DM client - and it sold more than 1 million copies not counting the expansions.

Of course not everybody actually used the toolset and neither will all Ryzom players make content with the Ryzom Ring, but as long as enough people use is there will be plenty of content - and that can't be a bad thing I'd say. :)

Im surprised Ryzom isnt more popular i dont sub but i played beta and the trial a couple times. It has a very oldschool SWG feel to me.

This Ring thing just takes mmorpgs to a whole other level as well. I hope its really cool it would be sweet having player made modules enter permanently into the game.

At the very least its a proof of concept for other developers to take and run with.

    ----ITS A TRAP!!!----

  • CopelandCopeland Member Posts: 1,955

I was just thinking if DDO allowed players to make modules it would be worth paying the $15 a month for that piece of crap. Personally i think every game can benefit from this type of addition but DDO just screams for it. It would really fit the nature of D&D to have player DM's making dungeons.

NOTE TO ALL GAME DEVELOPERS: NEVRAX WILL SELL IT'S ENGINE AND THE RYZOM RING APPLICATION. BUY IT. THEY NEED THE MONEY AND YOU DEFINATELY NEED THIS ABILITY!
