Every mmo(rpg) that I care about got pushed back for 2007 (from potbs to aoc). I mean it's great they take their time but......2006 was a bad baaaaad year for mmos in general. DnL, DnD *cough*
2007 is gonna be awesome, the only problem is that it's still gonna take months over months before a new good mmo hits the market. I'm not a mmo(rpg) jumper, but after 3 years of DAoC I need some fresh air.
Not one good release this year
PS: Don't get me started on Vanguard *shudder*
Comments
but on the bright side, I strongly believe 2007 will be THE year of mmorpg's.
OK GL,
You are about to get under my skin with this Archlord business lol, I'm in two betas right now that are not worth a sh*t, (Have fun doing your kill task kiddies, show me kill the badger / wolf whatever) you gonna square me away on some Archlord? Is there still a beta going? If so, can I still get in? PM me the details bro.
And no, 2006 was not a "medicore year" it flat out sucked. Name one game that was worth the time trying. Modicore implies "in the middle" "average" not so. This year was a f*cking trainwreck for MMO's. 2007 might be better but it will definately have a few duds also. (I'm testing 2 right now) If we are lucky they will both release Q4 2006 and we can just write off, seal and dump into the ocean that which was the MMO release year of 2006.
This year sucks...
2007, however, is gonna freakin rock.
Great MMO's only come along once every few years, given their extended development times, and frequent financial woes. It should really be no big surprise that most of the "filler" games that get pushed out are not very appealing.. these companies either don't have the time or money to actually release quality games.. or worse are just porting over a game that really doesn't fit in well outside of Asia. The problem is these games are pouring money into advertising/hype and are fooling consumers into thinking their games might actually be worth a damn.
As far as Archlord, I really can't fathom someone wanting to play this game. It is horribly generic and just not fun to play. To each their own, I guess.
I'll call out two companies (I am sure they will be shaking in their boots) for crap products. 1. Codemasters - they continually try to push out horribly ported games into US/Euro regions. 2. NCSoft - the king of the generic MMO. All of the art in their games is similiar, as are many aspects of the game play. For such a huge company they seem to have 0 interest in creativity.
I agree with you for the mostpart except for that line. How do you figure? CoX has won multiple awards for customization. It was the first to use story driven instanced based content AND its superhero based whats generic about that??? GW is arguably the next most played MMO in the North American Market. L2, for all its exploit faults is still one of the top games in the world market and no other game has its scope of PvP. Yeah they bombed out on Auto Assault but it was a unique setting. There isn't anything generic about any of NCSofts games, each has something unique about it.
When I think of generic, the companies that come to mind are Turbine and SOE with their endless parade of crappy MMO's.
2006 ain't over yet, although so far it's not exactly been a good year. Even Archlord awaits its final judgement in early October.
The only thing I could see of perhaps bringing the year to a good close is any kind of beta release of Darkfall, but even then that would just go on into creating more interest for 2007.
Of course,WOW's expansion is also due,but hands up if you think it's not gonna burn out by the time people hit level 70,realising there's still little PvP on offer.

Have fun
Archlord looks like crap. The whole "Archlord concept" they tout so much, looks like crap. Repetitive grinding? Looks like crap! Paying Codemasters to get a better character? SUPER crap!
They want us to pay hundreds a year to play their game and then give the most wasted-life hardcore grinder a prize at the end? Sounds just like RYL, only with a cheaper prize. In the same vein as RYL, if they don't get enough subscriptions, they will propably just cancel the contest.

If there was going to be one MMORPg without grinding it should have been DDO...Unfortunatly what happened was a game without a great amount of content and a easy to get to level cap...
So it looks like you can't have a great MMORPG without grinding, unless you want it to be really short.
I don't care for the "archlord concept" either. It only applies to one person so it automatically disqualifies 99.99% of the players lol. Add that to tier payments and I honestly don't see how that part is going to work out.
Not to many people go for that endgame crap anyway, even WoW is getting away from that 40 man raid junk.
But how is the rest of the game? Thats what I want to know...who knows, it might be ok. I can tell you the 2 betas I'm in are garbage. Can't be any worse then those two lol.

No thats incorrect. Being the Archlord benefits the entire guild, and other guilds that did not grab the Archlord throne will still have the castle.
WOW 1-59.
Speaking of Where are the Ovulating Women... If you like the Archlord concept, just go for Grand Marshal rank in WOW. It is almost the exact same thing, only you can keep the money you save by NOT buying $40.00 lord subscriptions and go buy the stupid suit of armor yourself. If you think someone will ever hit archlord by not buying the lord subscription and then grinding *all day*, you are sadly mistaken.
Looking to the future, I don't think Tabula Rasa, Hellgate London, or Age of Conan will promote the grind mentality. They will all come in 2007. Archlord is just driving the nail in the coffin of the dead MMO year that is 2006.

It's not just the mmo market that has it's flaws, the entire gaming industry seems to go downhills.
We had a nice discussion about that:

MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S

WoW 1-59 IS a grind. its not a long grind, but its just as bad of a grind as Archlord or Lineage 2. not to mention after lvl 60 you still have to grind dungeons over and over again.
Also, comparing the Archlord to a grand marshal rank in WoW proves how little research you did on Archlord. as a Grand marshal in WoW, you just get fancy items. thats it, nothing more. as an Archlord, you actually RULE the world. you can do tons of things as an Archlord, your the only one in the entire game that has a flying dragon mount, bodyguard NPC's, monster spawns, complete control over the tax economy, a meteor storm spell, control over the weather.
Not to mention the way you become Archlord is VERY diffrent then the Grand marshal rank in WoW. in WoW, to become a grand marshal, all you have to do is do the same Battleground over and over and over and over again, untill you have enough honor. in Archlord, you actually need to have huge support, usually a guild, to raid and claim a castle that can be taken by you by other guilds anytime (there will be guards though). and even then you need to fight the other guilds to become the Archlord in huge pvp fights.
Also, you can easily become the Archlord if you don't pay 40$ a month, just 10$ is a month. This can easily be seen by anybody who actually played the game for a reasonable amount of time, something you obviously didn't. just because there are diffrent pricing items does NOT mean you get to be ubar if you pay 40$. the PlayPLUS system is NOT an item shop.
Grand marshal in WoW is nothing compared to the Archlord.
point..and...click...bwraawrararaa
my g15 got bored too. we can't have any of that crap around here!
I see how people like AL, and I myself don't mind grinding from time to time, as I'm a 2nd gen MMO guy (never played UO and stuff, I came in after that) and it's been part of the games for a long time. I just can't stand point and click. Go. Stop. Go. Stop. Go. Stop. But maybe it was just bugged when I played the beta, who knows.
You know because you've become the archlord, right? The competition is not that high in beta. I seriously doubt anybody will get there at launch without paying top dollar.
As for Archlord vs. Grand Marshal, which one is better, I really wasn't trying to go that route. GM is the best in WOW and AL is the best in AL. That's what I was saying. Though, if you really want me to go there, I'd much rather be a GM in a game people actually play than pay extra money to be the AL in a game that looks to be getting everything wrong.

I got two 60's... did different quests with each one all the way through. So, if by grind you mean doing varied quests, then yeah, every game ever will always be a grind.
if Quests are like WoW (which are always go kill XX, go find XX or go to XX) then yes, it is a grind. only diffrence is that you have to return to an npc in a while.

I know because I actually play
the game. in fact, I am a 100% sure that if I ask you what items the
PlayPLUS system will provide, you have to look it up on a fansite. you don't have to pay extra to become the Archlord, because Archlord system is based on guilds. not to mention the items are nothing more then temporary, non-stackable items. and even someone who pays 10$ gets a reasonable amount of credits to spend on these enhancements, so in the end, the diffrence is minimal. This game is still time invested = character strength, not the amount of money put in it.
also, Grand Marshal is NOT the
"best" in WoW since a grand marshal has no meaning. it only has good
items, and a person that raidd will always have better items then a GM. IF you honnestly think that pay money = become Archlord, then I suggest you drop this debate. you obviously didn't play AL for a reasonable amount of time. I did.

I think that DDO wasn't a bad game, but it was not made the way it should have been. DDO is a great group game, good for people who want to meet up a few times a week online to do some quests and advance their characters. It is a niche game, when it should have stolen a huge chunk out of the MMO current playerbase.
If they offer a subscription package with LOTRO and DDO, I would probably pay it. Other than DDO, 2006 was a resub to older games year for me. I agree 2007 will be much better.
Grinding by popular definition is killing a static spawn over and over again to gain a level. There are several quest based MMO's out now. Quest based meaning no grinding. Don't even try to make doing quests look like a grind, because when you start twisting the grind definition into that, you might as well say everything that takes time in life or in game is just a form of grind.
WoW, DDO, SWG, and EQ2 all are non-grinding quest based games.
