screen goes black when at the character creating screen

when i click on the create a new character option than it brings me to another screen which was supposed to show option of choosing races or sth (i guess) but instead the screen turns black and i can't see anything but i can still hear the music has this happen to anyone?? Is there a way to slove it? Thank

Have you run the FFXI configuration before trying to play? The default settings can be changed and you may want to try this and then see if it starts you correctly. The configuration is separate, and can be run from the start menu under FFXI. Edit-> Telaki just posted as I was and gives good directions on how to do this, and one specific thing to try adjusting).
I won't even ask if you updated your drivers and stuff like that, I assume you've already tried that. This is an old game that never had high system requirements, and was relatively easy to run once you got past the incredible long and tedious installation. I think your problem will be easily fixed by experimenting with the configuration for FFXI or updating your video drivers for your graphics card.
