I have tried SoR on 2 occasions, once with in the last couple of months. It is a fairly good game, and I love the sandbox style, but it seemed to be missing something. Maybe more defined professions and more skills (combat pets) /shrug
The SS of Eve look awsome, but there is no ground game and too much PvP.
I DLed AO and played a bit, but the dated graphics and the character visuals were a real turn off.
Sad thing is looking forward to most of the SCI FI games in developent, theyall seem to be FPS style combat and PvP centric.
Is there no true SCI FI MMO with a traditional MMORPG combat system that is PvE based?
I guess I can play KOTOR again.

Your probably gonna have to wait till NCsoft comes out with Tabula Rasa.
Eeeeer... actually that game has FPS elements into it. But honestly it's probably the closest thing your looking for.
Which FF Character Are You?
I guess I am looking for more a SCI FI world sim with mmorpg combat and PvE combat.
SoR is probably the closest thing. If it had a profession system like Pre NGE SWG and creature handling
Yeah boyee. Get 3 Rancors up, get a group of 20 people and go Krayt Hunting, mad xp.
I remember those days, i loved them. Too bad they had to go fuck up one of the greatest MMOs.
And wheres the players btw?
Damn, they have all went away!
It's a shame they didn't realise what they were doing when they changed the pre-cu / cu system.
I'd recommend giving Anarchy Online a whirl. It's free so you have nothing to lose but time Even the download is free. No CC required either.
I won't recommend EVE because from the way you're describing yourself it doesn't sound like it'd be a fit for you. Though it's also a good Sci-Fi MMO
Good luck!
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Actually Tabula Rasa is a pure PvE scifi MMO with some PvP on the side, probably clan versus clan. You've never played Deus Ex haven't you? There are many FPS RPG games like it out there and Tabula Rasa is based on that FPS RPG system. It has a shooter feel but it is a PvE RPG MMO at its core. Tabula Rasa is THE game I'm anticipating on my side.

Screens shots look good, I just hate twitch and FPS combat on the PC. I can't stand keyboarding, and really enjoy true MMORPG style games, although I think TR will be a good game.
It would be cool of someone took Vangaurd's original vision and made a Sci Fi game.
I sleep with a pillow under my gun.

I am not exactly certain how TB's combat system will come out, but i am guessing it is a lot like Neocron. Which turns out to be not so much twitch based as it may seem although it does have fast action.
Its hard to describe. It has no target lock so it is sorta twitch based. But it really shouldn't be thought of the same as an FPS.

Sounds alot like Planet side and the NGE
... not even close
Tabula Rasa has an auto-aim that appears when you target an ennemy. Since TR is an RPG game, whether you shoot well or miss depend of your stats, so there is a "dice" system in the back working. There is no way to shoot without the auto-aim RPG system so this is not a shooter game. We can guess higher level you are better you shoot, but then it can be weapon related, maybe we will have to put points in certain weapons so depending of your level for that weapon you hit or miss, which means we might have to pick which weapons we really want to use. It's a bit like GW where as a warrior you have to pick between axe, sword or hammer. Also, there are logos in TR, some sort of spells that everyone can use as well along their weapons so there is more than just guns in the game.
The only Scifi game that I have played that was exciting was Earth and Beyond. EA pulled the plug in Sept of 2004. The game lasted 2 years.
There is still a big following. Many pleading with EA to bring the game back.

Sounds alot like Planet side and the NGE
I haven't played the NGE but Planetside is a true FPS so it isn't I will describe it as best I can as it is a true hybrid:
There are guns, psi powers and melee. There is a small reticle dot. Anytime this reticle dot goes over a mobs or item a targeting box highlight that object and give a name/hp/combat rank.
For guns:
Once targeted a circle appaers around the reticle. The longer you hold it the tighter it get until it reaches max "tightness". The tighter the circle the better your accuracy roles will be. The speed and max accuracy are determined by weapon stat and your player skills (rifle combat, weapon lore, etc).
Aim is target selectiong, not true aiming. You cannot aim for specific areas, as long as you have your target you will have a chance to hit. You can be aimed dead on and miss if your weapon/skills suck or you don't get a good bead.
For melee and psi power:
There is no accuracy ring. Its basically fire and forget. As long as your range is ok you will hit, unless the mobs gets some cover(note: mobs do seek cover!). You can fire off a psi fireball, but if it hits a wall then it stops, although the energy bolt seems to go through walls. Basically the reticle is just a target selector. But its a pretty nice target selector since its nice and quick.
However you do need to keep your target selected because you can misfire. No target lock and an item gun, melee, psi module can all be used at will, so misfires are possible and are part of the game.
I expect that Tabula Rasa will be very similar to this. I expect this because well I don't see what else they can do and still be an RPG. Actually Tabula Rasa devs have said that things won't even miss. They will just be less effective based on skills. So that might be the only real difference as Neocron has misses with its accuracy mechanic, but still has the less/more effective (based on skills and crafting) mechanic. I was a little disappointed when I read that about TB as I really like the aiming mechanics of Neocron. Running with a rifle should make you miss.
The gameplay of Neocron is not eactly FPS like. The movement is similar, because staying behind walls for cover etc is very useful. But the actual combat is different than an FPS. In halflife2 I like to pop corner and headshot with a shotgun. You just can't do that in Neocron. But you can and should use corners. Its jsut something you have to see for yourself. I have no idea whether many people would like tha gameplay, but I do know it is its own thing.
I would say its more RPG-like than FPS but even though its a true hybrid its really its own thing. FPS player often don't like that you have no true aiming. It might be too fast for some RPGers. And it has some feeling for both. But it winds up with its own feel. Its kinda impossible to take an RPG and and FPS in your head and get a good representation of what the Neocron combat genre is like. I tried to do that, but I wound up being slightly off.
I'd have to agree with the above poster. The combat system in Neocron, IMO, was the best i've ever played in any game.
A mix of deus ex so to speak. The way your skills made the target reticle smaller or bigger...and how mods on your weapons could effect that further. If there was another MMO using that combat system, i'd jump for joy and play it till my eyes fall out.
I hope TR is this way
Note: the aiming mechanics of Neocron are not "original" either. This exists in a non-skill based, movement based way in some Rainbow Six games as well. But it is a great mechanic IMO.
Yeah I am hoping and praying TB turns out very close to this. Neocron is a great game but its just so buggy and old, I doubt they have more than 2 programmers working on the game with their low pop.
