another "what game shall i play?" thread

Well I'm looking for a new MMO and just can't seem to find one that looks appealing right now.

I'll list the MMOs that I've played and why I don't play them anymore and maybe someone can point me in the direction of a good one based on that

Dark Age of Camelot: Didn't like RvR. Too much team based PvP, not being able to choose 'who's on my side', not having the option to solo, over run by elitist '8v8' guild groups.
-Quit and resubbed 3-4 times, total played for approx 12 months.

EVE Online (Currently playing):  EVE is great for a while but it ends up just feeling like hardwork trying to find the fun. PvP is excellent if you can find any.

As a pirate I ended up fighting with other pirates as there were no
targets or just having mini blob wars with other pirate corps, we warp
in 2, they warp in 5, we warp in 8, they warp in 15, we go home. Or
just gate sniping, the fun.. Tried 0.0 alliance PvP and that's just
sad, gate camps, lag, er, fleet battles. Not fun.

PvE is lacking, another repetetive missioning system. I do like the
sandbox idea, but too much sandbox just feels like not enough to do.
However the player driven economy is good.

What a forum whore community too. That's where all the fanboys come
from perhaps. A lot of them don't even play the game but pay their subs
for the forums and to keep skill training. Sad but true.

EVE devs have actually said themselves, most players only last 7 months and that is all they cater to.
-Quit and resubbed twice, currently playing for the third time but bored again, total played time around 8 months.

Star Wars Galaxies (Post CU/Pre NGE Period): Loved it, but oh well.
-Played one period of around 5 months ending at the NGE.

Lineage II: Didn't like the 'hardcore' PvE nature of this game, grinding for exp, items, Adena (gold) only to lose it to a gank, however I did like the open PvP, but not the flagging system.
-Played twice. Total time played, around 3 months.

Everquest II: Kinda liked the
PvE for a while I guess, liked the crafting, didn't like the lack of
PvP. Considered PvP server but the rules were lame. And, let's face it,
SOE.
-Played once for around 3 months.

Guild Wars: After a month of
playing I had two max level characters in good gear with good skills
and only the PvP was left, which just got repetetive. Would rather play
CS or BF2.
-Played for around 2 months.

City of Heroes/Villains: Too repetetive, too much grind, underpopulated PvP zones.
-Played for around 2 months.

Saga of Ryzom: Felt like their
wasn't enough to do. Kill creature#1 in area#1 until exp gain drops,
move to creature#2 in area#2. Little PvP also, kind of carebear
community.
-Played for 1 month.

Face of Mankind (Beta): Was just beta, but there wasn't much here except people shooting at you. Heard it hasn't improved much.
-Played for about 3 weeks.

Space Cowboy: Currently playing this on and off, just for fun, though there isn't much to do in this either.
-Played for the last 3 weeks.

The Matrix Online (Free Trial): Same PvE as CoX, didn't see any PvP as was just on a trial.
-Played 14 day free trial.

Neocron 2 (Free Trial): Liked the concept, loved the atmosphere, but it seemed dead with not many players and even less happy players.
-Played 14 day free trial.

Flyff: Just another asian MMO clone, except you can fly! o/
-Played for a few days.

Silkroad Online: As above, without flying.
-Played for a few days.

Auto Assault (Beta): Didn't really know what to make of this I guess since it was only Beta. Wasn't much to do but kill endless mobs.
-Played for a day or two.

Settlers of Ganareth (DnL Pre-Game): lol.
-Played for around 30 mins.

Final Fantasy XI: I guess I didn't give this a fair chance, I hated the UI, the music and the controls. It was all very headachy. I only played it for 20 minutes or so.
-Played for around 20 mins.

I realise this is a lengthy list, and you may say "maybe you don't like MMOs", but I do!

I want to have fun in a game again. Want to stay up all night playing, PvP with a good guild and have it not feel like work.

You probably have noticed that the dreaded WoW isn't in this list. I've never been tempted to play it until now, and only now because I've tried like every other popular MMO. Could it be worth trying? Is there a free trial? Because I've been unable to find one.

Anyhow, if you've made it this far, congrats, now tell me what to play.

I'll suggest Ultima Online first. Out-dated graphics, but it's a free trial and I feel worth trying. Decent PVP atmosphere. Factions are fun. Going downhill in my opinion, but still a great game. (Going downhill because they add new features that make it more like modern MMOs.)

Also, World of Warcraft. You can try a limited 14-day trial here as well.

The modern MMORPG is simply not worthy, of the acronym RPG. The straight grind and lack of atmosphere leave me with no choice. From this day forth, World of Warcraft, Everquest 2, and all the games like them shall be referred to as PIGCRAP. People In Guilds Constantly Raiding And Power-leveling

You might like a WoW PvP server.  Its still not completely open PvP but mostly open and no looting of your stuff when you die or any other penalty for a PvP death, except wasted time running back to your corpse.  Its definitely one you can stay up all night playing.  Just read the forums before you choose a character class.   THere are definatley some classes that are more welcome in the good end-game guilds.

On the downside;  There is some heavy grinding in the upper levels and your success as a PvPer heavily relies on having the best items, imo way more than skill figures in.

WOW's free trial is no longer being offered, its null and void these days.

Have you tried Anarchy Online yet? the graphics are dated, but the gameplay is superb, comparing the customer service to what you can find in other games is like comparing a steel forged katana to a butter knife. Classic version of the game is free, with content up to level 200. Upgrade to the expansions and then you start paying monthly.

Guild PvP revolves around the establishment and capture of Notum tower sites, these give significant and varied stat bonuses to their owners. Capturing these towers also affects the world at large. All players get a side XP bonus primarily determined by how well their faction has been doing lately.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I suggest you would also try Dungeons and Dragons Online : Stormreach - its the latest MMOG game and the only one that recreates the classic pen and pencil game Dungeons and Dragons.

    Are you
a match for the fearsome monsters and the dungeons? Can you discover
the secret mysteries that threaten Stormreach's very existence? Forge
    your destiny in Dungeons & Dragons® Online:Stormreach"! :D

Reaps if I was you I would give Planetside a try first (free trial right now)

If thats not your thing then I would try WOW, people can say all they want about the game but I enjoyed it and played it for a while. It is what it is, not the best but a very good all around game. in this case it does meet all the hype.  Personally I just thought the 'Honor System' and BG's ruined the PVP but its still a fun game for a while.  Just look out for a new server to open up, or frind a pretty new server. The reason I say this is that the old servers are top heavy and trying to find a group to enjoy certain low level things in the game can be a drag.

TCOS (The Chronicles of Spellborn) open beta is suppose to be this month, that game looks extremly good (ingame vids too). Might wanna try that out as well

I won't get into some future games that will be comming out, im sure you can do that yourself.

Don't play WoW.  The PVP is pointless, in my opinion.  I like some kick to my PVP death penalties, not just a run to my corpse.  Anyway,  I agree with the reasoning of why you don't play those games.  I feel exactly the same way you do -- you want to stay up all night and play your beloved game -- and look forward to playing it when you were away from it.  I hear ya, but nothing is out that is like that right now.  Vanguard comes out VERY soon.  It looks amazing.  SOE co-publishes it meaning they have no control of the code, just marketing with approval from Sigil (the programmers).  I'm not subscribed to any games right now for pretty much all the reason you've stated.

In otherwords, research Vanguard and just wait, save some money.  It will only be a few months.  If that doesn't look interesting to you for whatever reason (there really shouldn't be a reason to NOT want to play it) try World of Warcraft.  It's fun for a short period of time.  I only lasted a few months with that game.  I couldn't play it more than two weeks at a time without taking a two week vacation.  Something about it just didn't appeal to me.  It's definately worth trying out though.

Other than that, no game out right now is really any good.  Kind of a bad year for MMORPG's.

Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

Thanks for all the helpful replies so far. I'll tackle one at a time.

About Ultima Online, although I've never played it, isn't it just a little too late to start that from scratch now? I know how it feels joining MMOs late (Another reason im hessitant to try WoW), and UO is ancient.

Sassymolassy, thanks for that suggestion. I believe I would try a PvP server if I did play WoW.

About Anarchy Online, I forgot to mention that I did try it once, only breifly and was put off by the very dated graphics (this was maybe two years ago too). After that I got really angry with them for constantly sending me "Upgrade now!!" emails no matter how many times I tried to unsubscribe. As a matter of fact I'm still getting them today Still, I may check it out again.

DDO is another I forgot to mention, I tried it recently from a free trial that came with PCGamer. I never played any pen & pencil games, so any relation to that would have been lost on me. I didn't really like the mass instancing in DDO, nor the voice the keeps telling me "You enter a dark room and sense an ambush!". Just wasn't for me.

Planetside is a game I've always considered trying. The only real thing holding me back is, of course, SOE. However, after checking it out, the free 'reserves' thing sounds good. I may give it a try.

Vyre, it's always nice to be agreed with and I agree with you, Vanguard does look pretty special. I've been semi-following it since I played EQ2 but I didn't know it was due out so recently.

I think I may give Planetside and/or AO a try since they are free. Failing that I will probably either play no MMO as Vyre suggested for the time being, or give WoW a try until Vanguard is released.

    Again, thanks for the replies

Dont sleep on Three Chronicles of Spellborn bro.. The game(ingame video) looks pretty amazing and its due out by October.

  • If I were you I might try Auto Assault again.  Now that the servers are merged there is quite a bit of PvP action in Ground Zero that you can just pick up on real fast.  You will need to do a bit of grinding to get up to that level, but all in all its not that big of a deal as its generally fun gameplay and leveling is pretty fast.  But yeah past the missions and the PvP there isn't so much to do.  I reccomend playing some alts for each faction as well.  If you like Space cowboy you will probbly like the game play.  All in all its quite fun really.  And the physics gives it unique effects others games can't do, like oil slicks.

Neocron is a cool game but like you said its very low pop and buggy as well.  I doubt you would get the PvP you want.  The PvP they do have is pretty cut throat though.  I dunno I am playing it right now because it is different and interesting but its very hard to actually reccomend it.  If it had like triple the population the captureable outpost PvP is supposedly is pretty good, but I don't see that happening.

For Guild Wars you need a good guild to really get into the good pvp.  Arenas are not so great other than as a quick little bit of fun.

I didn't see Planetside on your list you could try that and up to Rank 5 it is free.

I don't really see the point in trying WoW for you.  I consider EQ2 a somewhat better game anyway.  But if you get a free trial you might as well try it.  Its a fun game, but its not different in anyway really.  Just another EQ clone.  And once you hit 60 its not really fun anymore and is supposed to be work.  If you don't do the work (raiding) you will get destroyed in PvP.  For someone like you, I would think you would want to never allow your character to reach 60.  I still regret leveling my druid to 60 I wish I could kill him down to 59 like a game with xp debt.

Try Ultima Online and if you like the gameplay (skill based, sandbox) then you only need to wait till next year and it even gets new graphics :)

I love Ultima Online, but have you seen the screenshots of the new graphics? It's just another 3rd Dawn with slight improvements. I like isometric graphics, but UO:KR looks like crap as it stands. Of course, it is still an improvement... perhaps.

I don't know hardly anyone that uses the current 3D client. I really wonder about the success of UO:KR.

Reps, I feel exactly like you and agree on the comments you make on every game.
All those reasons make me unable to find a game I feel like playing for more then a week.

I'm back to non-mmorpg games and with a few friends there's still plenty to do, especially if you use Hamachi to simulate lan networks over the internet. And I'll just wait for whatever the hell comes out next and see how its like, I'm pretty excited about Age of Conan and Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Thanks again for the replies. I've been researching Vanguard and Age of Conan and they both look like games I could enjoy, so I'm going to follow those for now :)

Star Trek Online also intrigues me, but only because it's Star Trek. However, MMO history would suggest it's doomed for failure along with LOTRO ("Look what franchise we have rights to, it'll sell itself!").

Chronicles of Spellborn I don't know a lot about. I was kind of put off by the screenshots of women with six-packs, but I may give it a look.
