The are several niche strategy board game companies that use this method of publishing.  They use this system to gauge the damand for certain games. The system for SWG PreNGE

1. SOE/LA would start the program by launching a web site and setting the launch goal. Im guessing 25k pledges.

2. People desiring the system would log on the SOE and pledge $80 for 6 months of PreSWG with a credit card. The card is not charged until launch. Users get continued discount of $80 per 6 months for pledging.

3. When the goal is reached, SOE sets launch date - hires, gets equipment etc. Im guessing launch would be 3 months after pledge goal is reached.

4. Launch date arrives, SOE/LA collects 2 million, people logon everyone is happy.

The finacial incentive is already there for Pre-NGE servers... they know they could double their profits overnight, but they still won't do it... honestly, it's a creative idea, but moot...

There is no SOE.

There is only LA.

SOE is running the game, but they don't have problem with emulators, etc. Some will not understand why, but there's a very good reason for it. And SOE understands the market.

LA on the other hand doesn't know what SWG is. For them it's a mark in their revenue table. And as such they are most unlikely to do anything about it unless there's a financially sound proposition behind it with FIXED GUARANTEED ROI.
