Because it makes for a more dramatic scene for the leader to go charging into the front leading his men to death instead of hiding a mile away sending people to go die and running like a squirrel whenever something comes near him.
has anyone mentioned the cg scene in the beginning of WoW? Thats always bothered me that a dress-clad human mage respresented our race over than a badass warrior who could have made us look a little more heroic.
i think the only think that pseudo represented a knight/warrior was the orc with a big wooden stick.
it must be that lingering animal instinct that humans have, we want to see the toughest mofo around raining hurt and representing our species to the primal utmost.

wth are you talking about. Gandalf would take his staff thing and knock the dudes head off after lifting him 30 feet into the air. And if you didnt notice, in the lord of the rinds the two towers, the movie Gandlaf took the lead and went on his horse charging leading the army, and gandlaf is a wizard who looks cool and goes melee, not a sissy in a dress who hides in the corner shooting fireballs at the spiders untill he eventually hits one and then has to run and jump up on a rock so the spider can get to him and then kill the rest from up there after using a mana potion. Gandlaf could kick anyones butt.

Originally posted by Tuor7 Some people are using classes like those found in D&D or MMOs and trying to equate them to what peoples' roles were in LotR. This is a bad idea. Yes, Gandalf occasionally used magic, but mostly he acted without the use of magic, and I don't recall him ever duel-wielding any swords. In LotR, he had Glamdring, and that was it. Aragorn spent time in military service in Rohan and in Gondor, and not as some guy shooting arrows, but rather as a man who led other men. In particular, he was considered a great captain of men in Gondor when Denethor's father was Steward. In the books, Aragorn doesn't have or use a bow -- at least, it is never stated that he had one, and he was never shown to use one; only Legolas had a bow. Don't confuse what Hobbits and ignorant townsmen call Rangers with what D&D and various MMOs call Rangers: they're not the same hting. * * * To address the OP: In most settings, it is supposed that the study of magic requires intense committment and time so that, while one may understand the nature of the arcane, a mage would not have had much time to master such mundane skills as swordsmanship or military tactics and strategy. Those skills wouldn't even necessarily be taught to most swordsmen, but to nobles and others who had the freetime to focus on such studies instead of magic or day-to-day living. Commanding armies is not a simple thing. It requires a lot of knowledge, skill, and energy. Also, if you are leading an army of people in armor wielding swords, it is important that you understand how people who armored and weilding swords fight, and that knowledge is best gained directly, through personal experience.

That being said...
Why do mages gotta follow all the guidelines of the other MMOs/Fantasy RPGs and Books? Many people have it set in their mind that mages are weak, support characters who dress in robes and are weak in defense and any type of normal attack. Why not make a game where a guy in a knight outfit is actually a skilled swordsman and even better magic user? With the right plot, the sky is the limit for classes/ hybrid classes.

Well, the most obvious answer I can think of is class balance. If you had someone uber at magic and at melee, then that would make them an extremely powerful class. Now, most game developers seem to want multiple classes with each bringing something to the table, so that people can feel relatively unique *and* useful to a group. The sort of badass you're talking about would hardly need any other class (except maybe a healer class), and everyone would want to play only that class, causing other offered classes to be under-represented.
I'm not sure if there is any workable way around the above situation. I'm not saying it is impossible, but it would require a lot of thought and ingenuity, if it can be done at all.
In many settings, magic is something the common folks fear. This make wizards a very bad choice for an army general. Besides, wizards often have their own hierachy - From their college or whatnot. A wizard is better off leading a small group of wizards, or being he generals advisor than the general himself.

I was partially wrong. And I accept the correction. Gandalf did indeed Duel Wield two weapons.
But it was 1 sword in one hand, and 1 staff/polearm in one hand.
Still though, he broke the "stereotype" of the "knight template". He was a wizard who led armies into battle. He was a wizard who duel wielded 2 weapons at the same time.

Your idea has already been done. And successfully too! Check out Dungeon Siege and its sequel Dungeon Siege II . One has a 100% choice on how to build up one's character. There are absolutly no set templates! It is up to you how much magic you want your warrior to know. Or how much warrior stuff you want your caster to know/use.
DS is a 100% Skill Based game. CSWG (Classic Star Wars Galaxies) was also roughly a 99% Skill Based game. One could be a "healer" aka Medic and effectivly use a high level 2 handed blaster. AO (Anarchy Online) is roughly a 75% Skill Based game. One can be a medic who duel wields 2 monster machine guns at the same time.
Level Based games (like EQ, WoW, and more) are what use templates. Such as... what the op is commenting on ... the too often done "Knight Template". Casters must wear cloth, must use daggers. Etc... WoW is a tiny bit less of a Skill Based game than EQ, for it does allow casters to use swords. But for some strange reason in WoW Paladins are tooo weak to lift up a bow. Tooo weak to hold a crossbow LOL!

Originally posted by Xpheyel Point of order! Gandalf wasn't some guy that studied magic until he was old. He was a frigging Maia. Also, I assume when you say Ranger, you mean Archer.Well, some logical reasons: 1) The leader might have to go out in front. Hence, (s)he would have to be able to: a) Wear heavy armor. b) Fight melee.I'm not saying it's impossible or anything but if you mean leading from the front instead of commanding or being strategically gifted the character in question might end up indistinguishable from a "knight". Simply out of a need to fight back effectively if rushed or ambushed and be protected from unexpected attacks.
But usually, a commander/strategist figures out army movement and tactics in a safe place...exept if you're a complete genious and can fight and command at the same time *cough cough Alexander the Great*
yeh but if this particular mage is looking sexy in nice clothes and a "big" staff who leads an army against another, then that mage in the video just blasts the other army apart that would make the mage image a lot better.

word.
possible anwser 1: historical knights are a military "class" and thats may be seen as the obvious leader for an army?
possible anwser 2: they use sharp weapons so they can cut limbs off?
possible anwser 3: thifes are chickens so they are stealthed by some tree and mages are bloody transvestites in dresses so there is only knights left?
Which FF Character Are You?
simple, yet effective! much better than my reckoning.
