Because in a virtual world I would like to choose the way I look. Individuality is very important to me, I really do not like to be cookie cutter or walk around with a char that does not in the slightest reflect who I am.
------------------------------------------------------ Do I ever sleep?
Because doing so would go against what 95% of the players of MMO's are asking for.
In any game, movie, tv-show, whatever kind of entertainment, you have about 3 minutes to impress someone. Statistics show that if you can't hook a player into a game within the first 3 to 5 minutes, you've lost already.
For most MMOs this is the character creation process, giving someone the ability to sit nose to nose with their monitor getting their new digital self just right is one of the most effective way's of compelling a player within the first 5 minutes in gaming history.
MMO's are a fantasy you can semi-control, you can control you destiny and the world around you, that includes how you look, what your wear, how you act. Take that away from people, it's almost a certainty that people would respond poorly.
I love character creation...the more complex the better!
I can't say that I get orgasmic about it but I can tell you that sometimes, when there's no-one else around, I'll give myself a little tickle down there during body-type selection.

I hate character creation because for some games it so long, i usually just click the random feature a lot of games have and go from there. But forcing people to not be able to choose how they look because they didnt get to choose in real life how they would look, would have a huge negative feedback rating from alot of games. Some people in mmos get all nansy pansy when their armor looks the same as someone elses, so im sure a huge ammount of whinning will happen if this ever gets into play.
How about asking us a question that you provide an answer for?
I could sit here all day popping off questions, it would require very little effort but what would be the point? If I had an opinion about the question, something solid and worth pondering, then that would be different. I know you said MMOs get "orgasmic" about character creation, and from that I assume you think too much importance is placed on character creation, but I want to know why you feel this way.
Here's a few dumb questions that I want you to answer, ok? Just answer them, please, don't give me a hard time.
Why do people play games, why all the fuss?
It's raining in Munich, Germany today. Shouldn't Germans buy more apples?
While getting gas I needed to use the restroom. the Men's room was filthy, had a big, ol' rat running around inside, but the Ladies' room was immaculate. Was it wrong of me, a guy, to use the ladies' room eventhough I locked the door while I was inside?
Jelly beans stick to dental work; why can't we collect all the jelly beans and blast 'em off into outer space?
Do you really want to spend time answering these questions?

Orgasmic=An orgasm, also known as a sexual climax, is a pleasurable psychological or emotional response to prolonged sexual stimulation. It is often accompanied by a notable physiological reaction, such as ejaculation, blushing or spasm and may be followed by aftershocks.

Because people like making decisions for themselves and creating a character they care about?
They have games where you can only change haircuts. They're usually called (truthfully and sadly) Korean MMOs.
Korean (asian mmos and rpgs) all suck.. thats no flame or trollling thats a fact... JUST LOOK AT ARCHLORD OMGG WTF IS THAT?

Because choice sucks less. You can always choose to not modify the base character they throw at your or hit the random button... and for the people it matters to... they can choose to spend the time customizing. Why not is the real question?

Damn you Jelly Beans! Damn you all!
Lack of character creation would be poopy. The more detail the better. I can remember spending a goodly hour creating my persona for SWG. I wanted him to look just right, be the right height, have the right eyes. This was going to be a digital representation of me, in frigging Star Wars man!
And a good thing too. He became one of the best Weaponsmiths on my server. Booyah!

There's a few out there that give you nearly zero choices to customise, so be thankful some do get orgasmic about it. No harm done.
Probably because people would just delete their randomly generated characters and reroll them as many times as needed.

Also because if you're going to stare at a virtual avatar for ~hundreds of hours at least~ you damn well want it to be one you like.
