Where did i say i like getting the W more than telling a story? Battles are part of my story...
I do prefer that as a whole, my nation do well and not lose their cities that they have spent many months paying for and designing. But when we lose, it is part of "life"... even the greatest nations in history fall.
Perhaps an overview of my own nation will get you in mind of what i am about.
House of Pandarrion is a corrupted holy city in which the priesthood has fallen from grace. Ruled by a council of priests of Pandarrion, the people began to suffer from a great plague. The plague spread throughout neighboring lands, leaving thousands infected, looking for a cure. The Brothers of Pandarrion let it be known that the great Pandarrion had given them the knowledge to combat the disease, but the price of the procedure was great. Hundreds poured in every day, forking over their estates in an effort to be free from the Carrion Plague.
What the populace did not know, however, was that the Priests of Pandarrion had sold their souls to a master conman in exchange for mountains of gold and riches. The local master of the thieves guild, Doolin Dalton, had spread the disease himself, after the cure had been tested and mass produced. This hoax was just one of many in the alliance of knave and clergy. Under the guise of a house of the holy, the House of Pandarrion was secretly a powerful thieves guild.
Cities were ransacked, villages burned, fortunes depleted... while the innocent priesthood sat back and raked in the rewards. As for Doolin Dalton, his power continued to increase and expand. The mild mannered, sophisticated son of a duke had found power beyond that of his tru surname which is never to be spoken.
OK... thats the basics of my nation's purpose. We PVP daily, in groups of 10-25. I will occasionally solo pvp, but I am out to steal... and I RP the entirety of this. If I must, i will kill, as would any good brigand.
Call me a griefer, call me a PVPer, but I do it all because I am a lover of Roleplaying. Have been for 16 years, DND, Vampire the Masquerade, GURPS, and so on and so on. I played MUDS, old visual muds Pre-UO, such as Illusia... But I found that in RL, the people we like to RP to be would not have made it far in life without encountering others like them, who crossed paths, and blades. I do not believe in RPing good vs eveil... Evil is BS. Its all like minds or differing opinions, no evil.
I think I don't play MMORPGs anymore because there's too many people whining about PvP and PvE and the balance between the two in the same.
Look- this is what you do... it's real simple... You make a game, and you declare what this game is going to be... the mechanics, the rules, etc. Then you stick to that; no alternate servers; no room for people who aren't with the program. No accomodations. Tell them you're sorry they purchased your game. Tell them to get lost.
Carebears can have their own games, PvPers can have their own games, and if you think you're in the middle- well guess what... you're just screwed. Pick a side and deal with it- because there's no such thing as co-existence between carebears and PvPers. It's a pipe dream. Get over it.
You want both? Play two different games.
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.
Well, goneglockin, that would be the ideal, but unrealistic. I mean, more than likely not to happen. If you look at the games out there now, and those being developed, what do you see? Mostly they are trying to fit PvP in there somewhere, somehow, for the voiciferous minority. And, 50% of the players don't care one way or another, as long as they aren't forced to PvP.
