Could gametap be bringing Earth and Beyond back?
That's insane! How is
that possible? Well let me explain.
If you haven't heard gametap is
bringing back Uru as part of their subscription service. I know what you are
saying... So what? What does that have to do with EnB? Well I was reading an
interview joystiq had with the VP of marketing for Gametap. Reading along he
said the following:
"Two places you'll certainly hear more from us are on
the fronts of more episodic games and more MMOs; Sam & Max and Myst Online
are simply the first of each of these."
http://www.rpgs.joystiq.com/2006/09/21/joystiq-interviews-david-reid-of-gametap Ok now your saying, still I don't get it. EA won't let anyone use Earth
and Beyond stuff without heavy licensing fees. That is where all of is really
falls into place. You see Gametap has a licence agreement with EA Games.
Starting to look better huh? So lets look at the facts first...
1) Gametap does have a licence to put older EA games on their service.
2) The VP of marketing at gametap said that there is "Certainly" more on the
way in terms of MMO's than just Uru.
3) Gametap seems to be bringing back
older franchises/games and starting them again (Sam and Max, Uru)
Now
for some speculation:
1) Gametap could have signed a general licencing deal
with EA games do use older games on their service.
2) EA games has a choice
to sit on the Earth and Beyond franchise/game, or make money off it with gametap
subscribers.
3) Gametap could get a good 5000 or so new subscribers with the
relaunch of Earth and Beyond.
4) As they are putting up Uru, it might be
possible for Uru and Earth and Beyond to share the same server.'
5) What
MMO's out there could be brought back other than Motor City Online, Earth and
Beyond, and Wish?
6) Ebportal suddenly appeared again, back from the dead
out of no where after 10 months of being down. No explaination whatsoever.
Does this mean EnB is coming back for sure? No. Things are happening that could
be pointing in that direction. The only thing we can do now is sit back and
watch. As the interview says "And we definitely have some very exciting news for
the gamers coming very soon for our birthday on October 17. But the key
strategic focus for GameTap moving forward is definitely on new and exclusive
content."
