Myself i could not stand the horrible attitude most wow players seem to have. crying over everything and being selfish and greedy.
I don't blame the players for this, MMOs are games that are predicated on greed. The designers know this. Any game will have that.

    Fixed that for you.

Wrong. Not all MMOs are loot whore grind fests.

With the exception of oddball MMOs like Second Life, which is less a game, more a glorified chat room, I can't really think of any MMO that isn't about whack a foozle for xp and gear to whack bigger foozles. Eve, and CoX take a slightly different approach to the usual advancement track, but they still involve the 'upgrade yourself via loot' principle.

Loot whoring, however is not native to a particular game. That's a wholly player derived objective. Some people just have to be on the bleeding egde, gear wise, or whatever, so they can run around waving their epeens. I imagine there are people like that even in Eve, or CoX, where loot is a bit more secondary. And greed? Certainly not unique to MMOs. They just give a stage to people that are unable to be in government, or the corporate board room, so that they too can screw others over for one more penny.

Saga of Ryzom, for one, has no gear or money drop from mobs. Only things that drop are materials for crafting. And the game is skill based, not level based, so you are not rushing to get to the next level. So, as Gestalt11 said, "not all mmos are loot whore grind fests."

If xp is the main thing to grind for then you won't have loot whores, because xp is just divvied up.  Gear is squabbled over.  In loot centric games like WoW everything is about what gear you get, rogues try to prevent druids from getting damage leather,  everyone gets pissed at hunters etc etc.  Xp is xp.  You may grind for both, but one involved loot whore behavior and the other does not.

Now we can takje this even further.  Eve is a game that certainly has greed as a major motivation.  Entire systems are controled for their resources.  And Eve can be said to have grinds in it (althoguh they are not truly necessary) such as mining.  However no one is looking for the uber drops in Eve there is no true loot whoring.  There are scams and various other things yes.

Grinding for xp and gridning for items are fundamentally different.  Gridning for xp is usually fundamentally cooperative, gridning for items is usually fundamentally competitive.  And WoW is all abotu griding for items.  It about getting the stuff you want and therefore making sure others do not get what you want.

Even many of the games that are grindtastic are not anywhere near the loot whorishness of WoW.

WoW probably doesn't have any more immature players than other games.  The reason people make these cracks about 12 year olds ( I admit I do to my friends all the time) is because the game is a very soft MMORPG.  Don't go getting all teary eyed because I call it a soft MMORPG, that's what it is.  It is not "hard-core" and some people (typically the immature ones) take offense to the fact that one could call their beloved WoW soft and not classify it as a hardcore MMORPG like the orginal UO or EQ.  It's that light-hearted aspect of the game that ropes people in and so if it works stick with it.  Blizzard created a solid product that people enjoy, but don't go as far to claim that it is some hard core, serious, in depth MMORPG because that it is not.  This is why ppl say all 12 year olds play it, because 12 year olds CAN play it suceed in the game unlike other MMORPGs.

WoW has a characteristic about it that makes you want to be what some would call immature.  Because I never felt I was ever at risk of losing anyhting when playing I enjoyed the joking side of WoW that others claimed was being a 12 year old lol.

Ummmm chess is a simple game for kids LOL. I wouldn't classify the rules of chess as sort of rocket science  most people are fully capable of learning how to play chess (Amathe, I'm sorry if you haven't learned hehe).

WoW is just like any other game.  The community will make or break it.   Yes its true that there are alot of 12-18 year olds acting like morons on almost every server.   The same for 18 and over is true as well.   You cant generalize and say that everyone who acts immature is under 18.  You can however point your finger at Blizz and ask why there aren't any real rules of conduct.   After you get a generic response from a GM you will realize that every MMO's support team is spineless.  All they want is your money.  If they stop people from doing all those things that annoy "decent" gamers then they will lose some money.   We all know they will never let that happen.

Will you people go look at some WoW statistics before spouting such silly crap please?

Just make the tiniest bit of effort to research what you're rambling about, and I'll be happy.

Well, I'm just annoyed that there isnt any ppl that has played an mmo before, they are all like ex counter-strike players or something.

So i could say 80% of all who played wow havent played another mmo before.

    you do the math.

Starwars Galaxies, An Empier Diveded, That's what it says on my box anyway.

There are those of many ages.  I have played many MMOs and am a lot older than 12.  In fact, my 8 year old plays occasionally, if I'm there to help her.

Blizzard did say initially when the game first came out that many players were those that had never played MMOs but had played other Blizzard games (Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft series).

Who cares if 12 year olds play.  It's a great way to learn teamwork and communication.  If you don't want to deal with those that are annoying (and many are over 12), then there's always the /ignore option.

I'm 41, my son is 14. We both play WoW. Most of the people in the guilds I have been over the past two years were at least 18.

Do a lot of 12 year olds play WoW? Sure, but I still think the average age of WoW players is about 26. I know plenty of people older than me that play. The older crowd is pretty significant.
