I was under some deluded impression that all combat would be melee, stuff like ooh you can aim at these body parts and all that turned me off the game. But now I'm a little more knowledgable and hyped from that article, with range classes and spell classes that sound almost what I had hoped for with WoW with 'skill-based mechanisms' especially with the cone spells which were part of WC3. So yeah I guess I'm jumping half on the same bandwagon as everyone else with this game now.
At first I was turned off by "live combat" but now understanding some of the mechanics (If the description is accurate) I think I could like this game.
Mounted combat sounds like it has potential and I'm definately thinking of becoming a mage (so I can be corrupted).
Now what books to read. The only source on Connan I have had any Dealings with was the Movie Conan with Arnold Shwartsinhagin and James Earl Jones...
BTW, I love this:

No. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's whats important. My work pleases you Crom. So grant me one request. Grant me revenge. If you do not listen... Then to hell with you!"

The game is based around the original R.E.Howard books, The game's timeline is set a few years after the close of The Hour of the Dragon, in which Conan is crowned King of Aquilonia.

So how flawed is the movie, when compaired to the books?

Originally posted by Fion Look for any books by Robert E. Howard to get an idea of the actual conan universe. Another movie is the one Kull, with Kevin Sorbo(sp) from Hercules fame. Kull was the early name of Conan and Kull the Conquerer is actually a Conan sequal lol.
The game, as it states in the interview, takes place after the novel Hour of the Dragon. I've read some of the conan material, the conan roleplaying game and a handfull of conan comic books. If your really interested in understaind this, the first actual fantasy universe of the 20th century, earlier then any of J.R.R. Tolkiens, who actually took some of his inspiration from the Conan works, though his work is very different.
I'd suggest picking up the Conan of Cimmeria books. They are a great introduction. Robert E. Howard wrote like 80+ books though, all in a rather short span as well. Mostly because he had his house boarded up and believed conan came every night and if he didn't write the story of Conan, then he would cut off his head
Oh and the interview is a little off. One of the big reasons I'm looking forward to this game (besides it being Funcoms second MMOG and they are awesome at introducing new things to the genre and pushing it ahead/being ahead of their time) is that Cimmeria, one of the three main kingdoms, mirrors the ancient Celts.
Cimmeria - Celt Aquilonia - Roman Stygia - Egyptian
The underlined statement makes it almost a must that I read his books. Next semester (this current one I have way too many literature classes) I'm gonna have to start digging in.

But yea thats almost a must. It's good reading to. Very dark, violent, lot of mature content lol. Theres a lot packed into his writing to, it's not nearly as drawn out as Tolkiens work, though I enjoy that too. You can almost tell that he felt he just had to keep going as fast as he could... before he got his head cut off
You know, there might have been something to that after all...

As to the movie, assuming you meant the Ahnold one, it had the spirit of Conan's world right, but pretty much none of the lore except place names.

One thing that i believe is that this game has the opportunity to be somwhat entertaining for years! FC have the Conan rights to 2023 if thay want to. And if you take a look on those Maps You can see how much this game, or world of Hyboria has to offer.
As a Norwegian, i realy hope Asgard and Nordheim will come out in a form of a expansion some time

Its pretty close to being equal focus. Both have their own xp, equipment, and skill tables. Those that do not want PvP can stay out of the borderzones and not have to worry about it, those that do can FFA and siege player castles to their hearts content

Looks like a mix, but once I discovered that the best gear comes from PVE raids my enthusiasm for the game just up and vanished. If you don't mind raiders getting a free ride over you or if you raid then it won't be a problem.

I don't remember exactly how long ago it was that I came to the same conclusion as Pantastic but I think it was about three months ago or thereabouts.
One of the developers (Jayde or something like that) did a number of posts on the official boards in which he went to great lengths to rationalize ---why raiders DESERVE better rewards---. He was quite passionate and insistant about it.
Now this wasn't coming from some random fan. It was coming from one of the developers. So you can pretty much see what direction the game is taking. And there is other evidence if you are willing to see it.
It was pretty damn depressing for me I have to say. Because "raid-centric" is a game breaking issue for me but developers are so damn afraid to break the mold of past games they keep making the same stupid mistake. And I'm running out of options for a future game.

Yeah because all Raids in MMORPG's are done like they are in WOW.... This is what I hate about WOW, ever idiot with a keyboard thinks that every game is just like it.
How about you do some research, and here is a tip try Funcoms other MMORPG and try Raiding in that game.. And then maybe you will notice that not all RAIDS are done like WOW...

Does that mean 40 man raids will be the norm? Actually just the opposite, the most likely raid scenerio will be 2 groups together... not 4 or 5 or whatever
Also the "npc siege" as I like to call it will be a big part... when you build your player town there will be spots where picts will rebuild encampments... and while you probably want to keep most of them beaten down, its in your best interest to let 1 Pict city build up and have them try and attack YOU, then return the favor and raze it to the ground as the more fully developed a Pict city is the better loot it will have...
Also I see this as good practise for PvP sieges and how to use the formation system
And just so you know the only thing i HATE more than raids is raids as substitutes for end-game content, and I am quite confident there will be enough solo/single group/chain quest/and more non-raid PvE content to make me feel happy.
in fact I started a thread or two on the subject that reached the 500 page mark, so I have disected the AoC dev stance on this issue in great detail, and they have reassured me... I"m still worried about it because its such an easy trap/rut for game devs to fall into, but I feel MUCH better about it now than I did initially

All I would point out here is that there are many MMO players that do enjoy "raiding." Given that well-coordinated raids are one of the harder things to execute in many situations, I think it would be inappropriate not to give raiders a tangible reward for their effort and successes in coordination.
This is not to say that smaller than 40-man groups cannot have situations that are difficult and rewarding, however, one must make sure that the raiding playstyle is rewarded as well.
Most arguments I see against raiding involve taking any substantial reward away from raids--which I personally think is a poor way of going about things. If you think about it logically, if for instance 5-man events gave as good of rewards as 40-man events, who would do 40-man events at all? Wouldn't the group of 40 people just do 4 simultanious 5-man events and get 4 times the reward?
After all, while 5-man situations can require a single person to have more weight than a 40-man raid, if you have an "elite" guild where all the players are at the higer end of the playskill spectrum, executing a 5-man event will be easier than a 40-man event. All other things being equal (player skill, difficulty, reward), raids are still harder to execute simply due to the need for large-scale coordination.
Given how many MMO player do enjoy raids and participation among larger guilds, I personally think removing any incentive and reward for executing them would be a big mistake.
Ok, now if you missed it go back through it and pay particular attention to that one line I bolded. And now explain to me why I, as guy who won't do large PvE raids, should not be concerned about this.
Guys I'm not just trolling and flame baiting. I used to follow the game. But I honestly became convinced that it's just going to be another game in which non-raiders are gimped and have nothing to do. But I haven't followed the game since then so maybe they've changed their minds. I find it hard to believe that they would change their minds about it as strongly as they were arguing that raiders MUST be favored but I suppose anything is possible.
I can dig up more dev posts if you want or you can go over there and do a search yourselves. I did a quick search and this was just the FIRST thing I stumbled onto. There is plenty more of the same over there.

Ok I just did a quick search over at the Conan boards and this is the first dev post I found relating to the subject of raiding.
This is from Jayde:
