Tell me more about that Chinese MMORPG

Yeah, I keep hearing some of you telling that the most popular MMORPG is not WoW, but one asian MMORPG (Chinese I think).

I want more info about it :whats the name, can you show some pictures of it, is there a strong story behind it, etc...

I'm serious, I heard about it a few times.

Chinese? I doubt it. Maybe you're thinking of Korean. That makes a little more sense, but I don't really have any idea as to what game you could be talking about aside from Lineage 2, which isn't strictly Korean. Other than that, I couldn't help you.

    ...oh yeah, the flaming:
/sarcasm; What the hell are you thinking you idiot?!? A Chinese MMO?!? LOLZ!!!11!!11!
/sarcasm off; There ya go; I'm done.

Or it could be the original Lineage, which is also Korean.  Isn't the Legend of Mir Chinese?  I think that's the most popular in China... but I could be totally wrong.  I'm just going off of vague memory right now.    I played Lineage for a long time but my tolerance for Asian MMOs is at an all time low... well, at least the ones that are out at the moment.

Oops... that should be Legend of Mir II.  Sorry.  I know it's very popular in China.

well, it's stated in their teaser site http://yulgang.netgame.com/, wiki and news according to China.com(the recent one) that until now, there are over 35million players played the game and more than 600,000 concurrent users...

So, it seems like WoW is not the biggest MMORPG out there!

  • SigneSigne Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,524
No, I think WoW has the biggest numbers in the Western world.  From what I understand, many of the Asian MMOs are free and there are THOUSANDS of them.  You can't walk down the street in Korean without bumping into an Asian MMO.    Unfortunately, most of the ones that come to the US and Europe aren't very well recieved.  I think Lineage 2 is probably the most popular and there are several new ones being worked on for the western market so maybe they'll have a bit more luck.  I beta tested Archlord and another which still has an NDA and didn't like either one of them enough to actually pay money to play... but everyone's taste is different and they might become popular.  I can't imagine they'd do better than WoW though, especially in the US.

Some people really should get their facts right.

Yulgang online does NOT have 15 million subscribers or 30 million subscribers.

Yulgang online has 30 million ACCOUNTS CREATED. yulgang online is a FREE mmorpg.

furthermore, the most popular mmorpg in china is westward journey online 2. also a free mmorpg.

the mmorpg with the most subscribers in ASIA is World of Warcraft, followed by Lineage 1, and after that its lineage 2

How could...most popular game in asia is free..what th...

oh yeah i forgot. they like grinding till their eyes fall out of their heads. frankly statistics mean nothing to me if its a F2P korean grindfest. something like lineage on the other hand...i've heard thats a little better than just a korean grindfest.

Allright, I want an aswer! What is the most played MMORPG in the whole world? Is it WoW, or Yulgang, or any of the free MMO?

  • CleffyIICleffyII Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,440
You have to look at concurrent users Online to truly answer that question.  I would say Fantasy Westward Journey 2 with like 700k people online at the same time.

So, the most popular game in the world is NOT World of Warcraft?

I take it you speak of MMORPG's, not every genre.

Nobody knows, really. you have to look at the active accounts of free mmorpg's( By that I mean accounts that have been used in a certain period of time), and very few companies release their numbers.

what we DO know is that there are around 12,5 million Active MMORPG SUBSCRIBERS, where WoW has 7 million    active subscribers. so WoW is the most popular mmorpg among pay to play MMO's.

It seems like Yulgang and Fantasy Westward Journey 2 both have more suscribers than World of Warcraft. So WoW is not the most popular MMORPG.

How do you figure?  If you go by what GL said, Yulgang has a huge amount of accounts created,  not subscribers.  If the game is free, I assume you can have loads of accounts.  I don't know... all this math is making me feel dizzy.  I have accounts on quite a few MMOs but I no longer play the games or pay for them.  But my accounts are still there.  I still have an account from the day Lineage began but I've not play or paid in a bajillion years.  Sheesh... I might even still have an account lying dormant at The Realm!    Even with all the accounts I have, I'm not a subscriber to any of them.

There are several MMORPGs that have reached 10+ millions milestone in the world.
The model of distribution and economy of these MMORPGs might differ from region to region but nonetheless the figure is there to be checked. You can't inflate these figures if there are stock value associated with them in the given market that they are being served.

Legend of Mir 2 once reached 20 millions milestone (served by Shanda network) and was largest MMORPG in China just few years ago in term of culmulative account created and concurrent number of users.

MU Online also had something in the range 10 to 15 millions ...

Ragnorak had 10+ mil across all boards and territories that it is being served. Ragnorak Online  in particular has very diversified markets unlike other MMORPGs, since it is served in more than 30 countries concurrently.

WoW's 3.2 millions out of ~7 millions comes from China and 1 million from Korea and Taiwan combined  and follow similar distribution model in that given territories. So the package-paying-monthly-subscriber
in WoW is restricted to 2 millions in western market.

    Source Intelligence

One last thing to remembers is that these numbers are constantly changing from year to years ....
and Sir Bruce's Chart isn't exactly accurate representation of actual changing dynamics and distribution model.

All in all, stock value of given company, profit generated speaks louder than speculative number of population which should also take into account the retention rate of said game and other factors.
