"Next Gen" MMOs = Current Gen MMOs

I think the next gen of MMOs will be just as dissapointing as this current one. In fact, I think it's pretty much made up of the exact same games.

Vanguard - EQ2 w/o loading screens
LOTRO - WoW v2.0
WAR - DAOC v2.0 + WoW graphics.

I think WAR is the only game that's promising at least some new features. It'll be the only game that I will try out because of it's new PvP system.

From watching videos on Vanguard and reading stuff all over their site, I think it's pretty much going to be another EQ2. The characters, animations, and environment all look the exact same. It may have a few unique things to bring to the table but I'm betting that it's not going to be very revolutionary.

As far as LOTRO goes, I don't think this game will be a very big success. I think it's pretty much going to be another version of WoW just full of people looking to RP in a LOTR setting. I haven't seen any combat videos for this game, which I guess stays kind of true to LOTR in that you just walk a lot. Plus, Turbine is pretty good at making flops nowadays.

What's happening to the MMO genre? It's all full of clones :(:( The few games coming out that are unique aren't even getting any hype so they will probably fail as well, or somehow manage to get by with a lower player base.

    Everything happens in small changes. Each one has their own little new thing about them. Just because they have similar things does not make them clones. Either play it or dont... I don't see why everyone complains so much on this website.

    Yes, WAR clearly looks a lot like WoW

    oh yes, clearly there is only 3 games in development

    And besides, same kind of combinations can be made up of any game ever made, save the very first ones so your examples are idiotic at best.

    Haha I know there's more than 3 games in development but those are the 3 that get the most hype. WAR looks way beter than WoW, but I was just making a comparison because it looks more like WoW than DAOC. Plus I realize that each game brings its own little thing as every MMO has since the very first ones, but I guess my main question is why are people calling them "next gen" when there's no generational gap.

    the ones calling them next gen are the ones making them. Why? Because they have current gen games to compare them, but mainly because it sounds cool.
    But i agree with you that really isnt anything 'next gen' about them, next gen will be something like true 3d or something.

    Those games are not next generation games.  They are not bringing anything new to the genre.  They are just the "next games"

    Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

    Age of Conan will have things no current MMO offers:

    * Action based combat

    * Fatalities

    *  PVP from the ground up

    * PVE/PVP Bounty system that works

    * Formations and Sieges

    But go on, go ahead and play Vanguard, Lotro, and WAR.

    It is up to the independent game developers to come up with something original.

    Unless if the independent game makers themselves coming up with then clones.

    I am keeping my fingers crossed for Funcom.   If they learned from AO then Conan could be amazing (even if it has a smaller player base).   I hope the graphics are a bit crisper (the screenshots aren't as nice as I hoped)  but as long as the gameplay is solid then the graphics won't be an issue for me.

    WoW and WAR..............they do look very much alike.   I for one am very bored with cartoony graphics.

    Darkhorse for me is Phantasy Star Universe.  Yes I know cartoony graphics, but as a long time PS fan I can't help but hope for the best for one of my all time favorite games.

    You forgot AoC. It's truely next gen. A it's the first actually human skill based mmo. Not just who got the best equipments or happened to have a better combo of equipment.

    Exactly, the reason why you say this is because you are looking at flops in the process.  I recommend researching Age of Conan, Ragnarok Online 2, and Huxley.

    I think there is only one generation of MMORPG, no game since Ultima Online changed the gameplay enough to be considered as a next gen. Any of the upcoming games can't be considered as a next generation. Exept maybe for Hero's journey ; from what I've heard, you can interact a lot with the environment.

    If we talk about graphics, there is 2 generations : 2d and 3d. Again, none of the upcoming games can be considered as a next gen.

    I'm also tired of hearing compagnies say "our MMORPG is the next generation"...

    You know OP

    What is this 3rd generation you are talking about?

    What do you expect ?

    All the games you mentioned (well except LOTR that will be a pile of crap) are not original - but they do aim to take well known gameplay and make it better

    While WAR is based of DAOC and WOW , it is fusing this gameplay and makes it better.

    And Vanguard is taking EQ basics good ideas and making them way more complex better and bigger.

    Just making something totaly original never seen before does not guarantee a good product. Actually it only opens door to potential disaster.

    However learning from your mistakes and trying to improve always brings good results.

    thats why one needs to look at Age of Conan !(among some others) How can a game filled with orcs gnomes dwarfs elves goblins and stuff could be different with an up-coming game containing orcs gnomes dwarfs elves goblins and stuff?One will always compare the game with another  game of the same genre...and all of these creatures will look about the same because thats how we know they look like,so if you are tired of the GENRE ,switch to another GENRE ! I think thats the biggest problem atm...the damned GENRE !! A gobling graphically more detailed than wow's goblins still a goblin..Then the games containing gobs and stuff are always set in the same kind of universe,and thats I think what people are tired,consciously or unconsciously...

    AoC guys..AoC !!

    All of that was done in previous games, it won't be a next generation MMORPG. But still the game I'm looking the most for!

    With the exception of sieges and formations, both of which have been implemented atrociously in earlier examples, I havent seen any of it in MMORPGs, care to clarify which you mean?
