Playing for too long without sleep, water and food.

    Heart failure and such.

It's happened in many games, not just WoW. WoW is just most popular so people (especially on this board) want to blame WoW for them. Mainly happens in Asian countries, they take their games very seriously.

People just play games for days on end, not taking breaks, and eventually die, as the guy above said, from heart failure / lack of rest / food / water etc.

I don't know about WoW, but some insist EQ did kill this guy and MMOGs can kill. It's hogwash though. They just don't want to accept personal responsibility for their actions.

If i remember the story correctly, it was one guy who died playing from heart failure. I seem to remember he was chinese and actually a Counter Strike addict.

And the kid who shot himself and the whole incident blamed on EQ, if you do aome background reading, they guy had some very real problems, the foremost being his mother. She now runs a very dubious anti-gaming/gaming addicts website and refuge.

The one gaming related story i do remember (and was genuinely shocked by) was the mother who left her kid locked in her car while she checked her EQ char. She got so distracted that she sat at the comp for hours rather than the intended minutes and her child died from heatstroke in the car.

Her website is a total joke! You can only be saved from MMORPG addiction if you accept god into your life, how about take care of your son dont let him get so depressed he doesnt wan tto talk to you and only play everquest then shoot himself becuase you can gbuy a gun anywhere in america.

Its the old if you dont believe in god your a sinner and deserve your addiction thing, classic stuff, How about just develop some self control and values, most people are sensible enough to realise when they are playing too much and there real life suffers, the people who dont are usually people who have missed out on something in life from there parents or somewhere else, maybe if the parents dont let there kids game constantly this wouldnt happen, if you bring up a kid and let them play games all day guess what theyll do when they grow up!

Cant believe these people blame the games, they just dont want to have to look closer to home!

Lineage is probably the most famous "death causing" game of them all.  Many people died of well, starvation and muscle failure from sitting on their asses for days.  Also there were instances of players killing eachother over getting PKed in the game.  That's what happens when you PK the guy sitting next to you at the net cafe lol.
Also instances of violence where basically game guilds fought in rl over similar crap.  Koreans ftw.

Meh. People shot each other during the last World Cup. Does that mean that we should stop playing football?

So people never shoot themselves or have heart attacks while they watch sports or soap operas?

(EDIT:  Sorry, I didn't see the last post before I entered this one.)

ITs better to die by the game then having someone else kill the game for you.

EDIT: Ugg, didn't realize the above posts were about the same story before i made this one. so well here's a text version.

Speaking of a person dying over a computer game. This death was several years back when EQ was all the rage.

Guys ever hear of Shawn Wooley? He commited suicide over EverQuest. Heres an excerpt from a magazine article describing him and his untimely death.

Shawn Wooley was a junkie. The floor of his Wisconsin apartment bore testament: fast food wrappers, dirty clothes, chicken bones. He rarely answered his phone. He had stopped going to work, instead staying home to play Everquest, an online roleplaying game. Wooley was an epileptic and his marathon sessions triggered frequent seizures.

The 21-year-old had been evicted from his last apartment after he sequestered himself to play the game. "He stayed in his apartment from July until the end of Septemeber," explains his mother, Liz Wooley. "All he did was play. He didn't work. He quit buying food. He wasn't bathing." Without an income, he was forced to move in with his mother, where he reimersed himself into EverQuest, staying up for days. His obsessive playing concerned his mother enough that she placed him in a group home for people with addictions. A doctor diagnosed his depression, said he had schizoid personality disorder and put him on medication, but because residency at the home was voluntary, Shawn was free to leave. "When I took him in for his problem, they just said, 'You should be glad he's not on drugs or alchohol,'" says Liz. To her dismay Shawn rented another apartment. This time he shut his family out. Shawn chained his door, refused all visitors and dissapeared into the game. For Shawn Wooley, EverQuest became his life. Imaginary money was more important than real money. Imaginary friends were more important than real friends. "He said those were his true friends and that we were not his friends anymore,' Liz Wooley remembers. And then... someone turned on him. (The magazine then goes on to describe griefers, pkers etc.)

A low point in the game occured when one of Shawn's best friends in the game turned on him one day. He stole all the virtual money and the items they had spent months amassing. "My son was totally shocked. He was upset," says Wooley, "This was a person he had trusted." Disenchanted and depressed, Shawn sobbed to his mother and briefly stopped playing. "I thought maybe I had him back, but as with most people who leave the game, he eventually went back."

Shawn was back. On November 11, 2001 he quit his job, locked himself in his apartment and refused to answer the telephone. His mother attempted to get in for two days before cutting through the chain on Thanksgiving. She found him in front of the computer, dead from a .22 caliber gunshot wound. EverQuest was on the screen. A computer log shows that Shawn had played the game virtually nonstop since quiting his job. Police reports refer to several notes around the room with words such as Phargun, Occuler, and Cybernine written on them. Liz Wooley is unsure of whether the words are names of characters he had, friends or former friends who betrayed him. The most telling is a character created on October 30 named iluvyou.

Now of course Shawn had problems and should of been seeing someone for it. But damn what a story though.

THese are creepy stories!  I totally believe in mmorpg addiction.  I have to check myself by setting up certain times I allow myself to play.  I love being emersed in a game but I dont want it to become my life.

My husband knows a guy who said he would rather play WoW than have sex.  Now that is a serious indicator or addiction.

LOL yeah that guy has some serious issues. I wouldnt care if my guild was at kel'thuzad in Naxx and I was the MT. If my girlfriend is in the mood. Its alt-f4 baby. I'll just blame it on my connection dying due to a tree branch falling across the cable line and snapping it.

I love playing computer games, and I love being "addicted" to them and losing track of a few hours here and there.  That's a GOOD thing; that just means you're getting the break from reality you're looking for whether you're playing a computer game, playing music, or taking part in pretty much any other hobby.

But I think there's a line you cross when you start caring how much imaginary stuff you have compared to other people, and you start worring about what people who are playing a game think of you.  When your self-esteem becomes tied up in the virtual world instead of the real one, that's pretty much the definition of "madness."

I think people should live responsibly and take care of themselves and not be so obsessed with pixels to the point they wont eat drink or sleep. That has more to do with addiction and addictive personality then it does any one game or company. Kiddies...go outside, visit friends, have fun, get some air and enjoy life, these mmos will be there tomorrow and so will your progress :)

I'm sorry, but there comes a point where the PARENT takes responsibility and takes the damn computer away from them. Period. Remove the source of the addiction and get them help. Don't ask them to get help, don't beg them. Put them in the car and drive them there, as often as necessary until they realize the problem and go voluntarily.

Video games are addictive, no question. Shawn Wooley had the unfortunate wiring to take it to the extreme when most people can handle it on thier own. The problem is Shawn's family let him down. They knew he had problems and rather than intervening, they let him wallow in his despair .... with a rifle in the apartment.

This tragedy is not SOE's fault or EQ's fault, it is the Wooley family who are to blame.
