I want to play something new, but I have particular tastes, and not a lot of time or money to waste on trying out every game out there. So, I'll tell you what kind of things I like, and you give me advice. I won't tell you what I've played previously, because honestly, I didn't like any of those MMOs very much. Except Runescape, which I have an on and off again relationship. It was my first MMO, and while I don't find the gameplay that bad, everyone who plays it has the mental age of 3.
Here's what I'm looking for:
- Good community, i.e. a lot of mature people, maybe an older crowd.
- Assuming that the above is true, a game that allows partying.
- Fantasy or historically based. I'm not into sci-fi.
- Skills are not a must-have, but I am not a pvper. I only like pvp when it's something like guildwars, where there's actually some skill involved (coordination, communication, strategy) and not whoever has the best stats and gear.
- Something where you can't max out your levels easily. I like having long-term goals so grind (as long as its not insane) is good.
- Not too expensive, I am a full time student so I'm on a budget.
Oh, and I don't care about graphics, sound, or any of that rubbish. I just want good gameplay in a good community; anything else is icing on the cake.

I'm looking down the list on the left of MMORPG's that might fit your description. I have played most of those, so I have a pretty good idea of what I am talking about. Where here goes:
Everquest 2- They have PvP and Non-PVP servers. You would want the Non-PVP servers. Leveling does take some time. It can be done solo or in a group. There is plenty of quest content if that is what you like or you can go it alone and just grind on mobs. EQ2 is not really expensive, but they charge you for each bit of content they release. Thank goodness there is plenty of content without those content additions. There are plenty of races and classes to choose from accomodating every playstyle, but every person of the same class is the same in regards to the skills you earn as you level. Great character customization as far as facial features and body size. If interested, read more about it on this site or their site.
Final Fantasy XI- A nice grind to it, but you will need to be grouped for most of it. Groups can be easy or hard to find depending on your class and how aggresive you are in seeking out a group. The controls are odd and take some getting used to. Lord knows that I didn't get used to it.
The Saga of Ryzom- A nice skill-based game. You can be whatever you want. There aren't any classes. You are free to choose whichever skills you want. Advancement takes some time, but not insanely too long. Community is the best part of the game. With the release Of Ryzom Ring, you will be able to take part of player made content or create content yourself. This game revolves around the crafters though.
That is it. The rest of the games I played had the type of PvP you do not like, did not have a long enough grind, or was Sci-Fi or some other genre that you are not interested in. I hope this helps. I am currently playing Shadowbane.
