Media sensationalism.  I had shootings in the high school in my neighborhood (Usually Latin Kings poping people) growing up every two weeks and it was not all over CNN.  The only reason this is "scary" is because it is in the Non-City areas now.  Well I'm sorry if I can not feign empathy all of the sudden.

School violence aint something new to me and it is not something I really fear.

I think that is the whole outcry....it is not the "troubled inner-city youth" causing the violence (although it is still there on a daily basis), it is "Bob and Diane's kid" there in Middle America.  I feel bad that kids feel they have to resort to violence to get their point across.  I know when I was younger I bore the brunt of a lot of jokes because of my outward appearance and my lack of athletic ability, but finally I started coming into my own thoughout later years and played sports into college while many of those who made fun did not make a high school team.  I never once thought about bringing a gun.  I think these kids take things to harshly and do not have anyone to communicate with to get these feelings out.  I think stuff like this always falls back in the parents laps.  Do a better job of raising them and for the most part, they wouldn't have these problems/issues.

    Holy crap!
I grew up in Macon Missouri which is located an hour away from Joplin!
I have a friends who attend that school.

Jeez! It's so freakin' messed up when something like this happens in a place you've been in before.

How'd this kid obtain the weapons terrorists use?

What about Blade? Blade was out in 1998, Matrix in 1999, Shaft in 2000. Black trenchcoats pwns.

No, but listen to this quote:
    Blade:
You better wake up. The world you live in is just a sugar-coated
topping! There is another world beneath it - the real world. And if you
want to survive it, you better learn to

    [shouts]

    Blade:
    pull the trigger!

Clearly these few lines drove the kid mad.

When the hell does an AK-47 count as a pea-shooter?? I hope you are kidding...there is a reason the AK-47 has been so "popular" for this long.  That thing packs a wallop...and I am guessing that the gun was over half the size of the kid.

I wonder if people are going to blame these recent incidents on Marilyn Manson like they used to?  If not, I wonder who the new scape goat is going to be?  I mean they are not going to point the finger at the parents and there has to be someone to blame.

As I recall it, Manson quite happily brandished those accusations as if it were a title :p No such thing as bad publicity after all, and it's exactly the kind of thing that makes his target market go "yeah!"

If I were in his shoes, I'd LOVE to be blaimed for this kind of thing - wouldn't you??

Maybe he played counterstrike 6 years ago, while watching Blade. Obviously, those are to blame.

Well.. Yes. "The slayer of puplic schools" Behold, i am the anti-christ! I could go around making jokes all day inside of jail.

Lol except you'd never go to jail because they can't prove 'influence' as an associate to murder. You could then get some more cash out of libel/slander (I can't remember which one's applicable here lol... It's a while since we covered it in media studies), and have all of the publicity of what happened drawing in more crowds creating you yet more revenue. It's a great ploy really.

yea not much new. In 7th grade i want to know how he managed to get his hands on an AK-47!? Other than that he was not a threat due to him not having a killer instinct. Luckily he was a hesitant kid. I know i am not much older but i have been through alot and i wont go into a big long life story looking for empathy, lets just say October 1st would have been my day, however my friends called my parents letting them know that i was not in the right state of mind. So now i am back in counceling and my psychiatrist is having more meetings with me now. ANYWAYS what i am trying to get to is, there are those that do it because they hear about it and just think they wana do that because it would be cool, then there are those that just want to end it. Nothing has value anymore, not even ones own life. Then there are those that are filled with hatred towards people and want to punish them. But i expect to be seeing alot more of these this year.

You cannot say you would have 'Gone through it' until you stand in the actual situation.
Alot of people think they got the guts to pull the gun, and then pull the trigger. Most people freezes in between. And this is why guns can often make a bad situation even worse.

yea i never said i would i just said i have been in a situation were i was near it. I unfortunately know that if it was just myself to get rid of i would have...seeing how i have attempted...yea (i am much better now, i dont want any empathy everyone goes through rough times)

anywho, i personally do not fully blame the parents. My parents actually care, my mom balled her eyes out when she found out i was atheist and they always ask how im doing, they yell at me over dumbshit but thats normal parents. The thing is parents that CONFINE their kids to the real world. Let your kids go through life how they wish. Help them up if they fall, offer your advice, but you and I know teenagers rarely obey their parents. They usually just experience it for themselves. Dont let your kids run wild smokin pot everyday. Just realize they are young and make mistakes.

Also the fact that they will not reveal how he retrieved the weapon tells me that they know it was not a legal deal, and they should have known something was up when a 13 year old buys an AK-47
