Found this on the EVE Forums:

Today on EVE Radio, DJ FunkyBacon had a guest on the show who you would not expect to have a subscription to Eve. A WoW Dev. LOL

So, it seems Southpark was telling the truth.

WoW devs could play EQ2 for all they care, blizzard owns the mmorpg genre. They are probably visiting EVE to see if all the horrors of the game are acctually true.

hmm I would say alot of you people dont get it :) with devs its the same story like with actors , tell me which actor would prefer to watch his/her own movie that he helped make and knows every piece of it over a completly different movie from the same genere which he did not have any part in ? I guess the answer is simple but I'll leave it up to you guys to decide :P Btw just to make the story straight I dont like WOW , got borred of it even before I reached lv 60 so I am not defending the game , just showing that using your brain once in a while is a good thing (no offence intended :P)

Just because he was a "Dev" doesn't mean he actually worked on any of the code, it could have meant alot of things.

And I actually did think of that to begin with. But, in the light of the recent Southpark Episode (which is the thread on EVE I found this) I felt it fit well enough for a post. :)

I personaly know a WoW GM that plays UO as his main mmorpg and that for the last 8 or 9 years. Longer than me anyhow. It is normal fairly normal that the devs do not play there own game. Hell you are in contact with it all day long at work, when you get home you like to do something that relaxes you and not see all the bugs that are still in the game ;)

    Pretty funny :)

In a letter from Smedley he posted on the EQ2 forums, he stated he and other developers were actually playing WoW. I geuss that explains the changes in SOE games...

Yeah,I didn't think the WOW devs would want to play their own game for fun; they test it enough as it is.

It'd be interesting if that 'interview' gave the name of the WOW's dev character though...

If as a dev you can't play and enjoy the game you are creating, there is something wrong with your game design. MMO dev's are pretty much required to play other MMO's to get ideas for their own games, same thing happens in single player games as well. This is how advancement is made in the genre as a whole. But if you can't go back and enjoy playing the game you are designing, or if you prefer to play another companies over your own because you enjoy it more, than you have to look at what is missing from your own game that is making it less fun than the competition.

It has been said that hardly any of the SWG devs play the game they create. That should have caused major alarms to go off at SOE a lot earlier than they did. It could have saved them a lot of grief, and players if they had noticed it sooner.

Garbage.  Devs are just like all the other players in the world, they get bored, they try new things, some like sci-fi, others like fantasy.  I would guess some WoW devs do play their own game, others don't.  It does not mean that there is something wrong with the game design, it just means that the game is not designed for them, but rather a different audience.

I've worked for a few diff game companies in various roles, and yes, everyone is playing something else.

For example, working on an RPG, everyone is playing FPS, working on an FPS? everyone is playing a racing game.

We might be devs, QA whatever, we are still gamers.

I wouldn't play WoW either if I had to work on it every day, it would drive you nuts. You wouldn't be able to enjoy it because you would be thinking of the work you needed to get finished on the game.

Or....it could just be bullshit. I can apply the "OMANZ WOW STUFZ ON SOUF PARK" logic to that as well.
