Yes, it's hard, very hard but that's why I like it.......... the challenge. My solo character is multiclass, only level 3 so far but have just completed the Waterworks on my own which gave me immense satisfaction.
My character is a Ranger (2)/Wizard (1), unorthodox, yes but works for me but that is the beauty of this game, I have been able to tailor a character to my exact playstyle, the combinations are practically limitless.
Of course, I will find higher end content difficult, just as I did in WoW or EQ2 which are more solo friendly.
If you enjoy character creation, experimentation and a challenge, give this *award winning game a try.

PS, this was not just some worthless award or review by the so called 'professionals' who work on sites like Gamespot or MMORPG.com, always amazes me that these sites etc give weight to there reviews, who are these people anyway and what expertise and qualifications do they hold lol.
You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.

I don't agree with you on the soloing part, but I think soloing in pretty much any game is lame compared to grouping, but you're right about the character creation. You can multiclass, pick specific feats you want, and pick specific skills you want. If you want to make a fireball-throwing wizard who wears heavy armor and fights with a sword and shield, you can. If you want to make a fighter who can jump 30 feet high and do backflips, you can.
I'm not surprised the game won an award, despite the criticism around here. I talked my share of crap to the developers over on the DDO forums because I know the game could be better, but the more "praised" MMOs I play, the more DDO stands out. Every time I try a new game that doesn't get as much crap here, it's often nothing special. Haven't tried Eve yet, though.

Which FF Character Are You?
Dont waste your money. I like to solo myself and there other games out there that are much more solo friendly. The solo content was added later as an afterthought and you can tell.

Not to mention that currently there is only solo content in the harbor, beyond that the quests get harder and harder, so if you only plan to solo I hope you like repetition.
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
RFO is a decent game for solo play if you like PvP, and dont mind the kill 10 of these kill 20 of those kinds of quests.
I have two solo only characters who will never group. I love the challenge. Running in a group of six toons of the same level of the quest almost guarantees your success. Many of the groups literally run through a quest at break neck speed just for loot and xp...forget challenge. For a person who loves to solo this game is PERFECT. You must use your intelligence, take your tiime, and take some chances...that spells fun too me.
Personnally, I always said the game is nice...
However it is an ACTION game that dare to advertise real D&D among RPGers...which lead to the criticism it rightfully get. Baldur's Gate on the Xbox never advertise itself as "real D&D", they make it quite clear, from the start, that they appeal to action fans, not rpg fans. DDO twist many D&D rules, put them as a rpg skin over an action game, than they try to say it is a rpg, while it isn't. (real D&D is automatically a RPG...in case these devs didn't understand that).

Heh, well, different strokes for different folks, I guess. I've been fortunate enough to be able to play PnP DnD with friends pretty much every week for a awhile now, and I thought no way in hell would a live-action DnD game work. But, to me, it does. ...more or less. Mr. D&D Dave Eckleberry is the head guy, and I'm still not sure if his input and design helps the game or hurts it since sometimes it seems like he wants to single-handedly rewrite all of the 3.5 PnP books.
I almost never play FPS games anymore, but somehow DDO balances the line pretty well for me. The quests are better than other praised MMOs, the tools for playing with groups are better, and the combat is better other than you can't fly or teleport during it such as in City of Heroes. A main problem with the game is the unbalanced xp and loot for quests that makes seasoned players only like to repeat certain ones and then people say the game lacks content even though they haven't even bothered to look at the other 80% of quests available.
Neverwinter Nights 2 is coming, so we'll see what that brings. I tried the first one not long ago and just couldn't get into it even though I had a blast playing the turn-based Temple of Elemental Evil.
