just a question

Just curious, would those that dislike jedi so much have cared if the game was set during the sith wars? i always thought that would have been the answer to the problem of so many jedi in the game. and im not talking about nge(hates it i does) heh heh.

I dont think people actually dislike Jedi.    I think people disliked the idea of so many Jedi in an MMO.   When every other person you see has a Light Saber, it kind of takes the fun out of it.   If we wanted to play a game that has alot of Jedi running around, it would be easy to find one.  There are lots of those around already.  Having a game set during the Sith Wars would be the same as all the others.  Everybody running around with a light saber.

So move the game to a timeline where no fanbase really has been built, just to justify a throng of lightsabers?

    That works!

Too bad the younger generations can't see Star Wars but Lightsabers. Instead of a galaxy filled with content and planets both alien and dear to the fanbase, they see...Lightsabers.

If we had wanted to play a game with lots of lightsabers we'd buy a much much better one....say KOTOR or whatever (not that I've played it - I'm not interested in mindless lightsaber action!).

But that's not an MMO? So what, it's a better saber game from what I've been told.

It's not jedi per se, it's that there were far too many of them, 10-15 per server would be quite enough for me.

Sith Wars don't really interest me, I don't think that a MMO centred on jedi would appeal to me, especially after the numbers we had running around late-pre-CU, CU and now under NGE.

It's a bit like trying to start a band but everyone wants to play guitar, it sounds ok but it'll sound a lot better with some bass and drumsimage

Jepp, way to many jedi. The path should have stayed a secret. And not in any case unlockable until at least one year of play. I grinded a jedi myself. Will i do it again? No way. Id rather grind me a old school BHimage

I think if SWG was based in a different time line (Old Republic era) alot more folks would have been more receptive to Jedi. But to try and sell a game between EP 4 & 5 with truck loads of Jedi (preCU-NGE) and sitting there with a straight face trying to tell folks "yeah thats right" wasn't a smart plan.

Just so its clear, I oppose any game mechanic that fundamentally contradicts the movies, not just giving away Jedi.   Jedi were all but extinct at the time SWG is set.  Therefore, Jedi must be rare in SWG.

So to answer your question, if SWG were set during the Sith Wars, or any time the jedi weren't all but extinct, I wouldn't object to player Jedi being somewhat more common.  However, I am only interested in a game set in Ep. 4-6.   If its in the prequels or in the distant past like, I am not interested. If I were in charge those three would be downgraded to the status of EU, not canon. And Ep. One would be on par with the Star Wars Holiday Special, to be suppressed at all costs, lol.

I would have preferred Jedi to be reserved as big boss type NPCs to defeat or randomly spawn in places where fighting occurs.  A realistic Jedi is too much power for the average player to be trusted with, much like the Sword of 1000 Truths.  And the gimped Jedi in the NGE now are just a travesty to Lucas' vision.

The addition of EU to SWG would have been a huge bonus. Alot more content and storylines to work with. That was one of the things that bugged me with the original SWG storylines, how could you really deviate from what was already written? LOL. There wasn't many directions the Devs could go in and that why I think it died off in the Cries of Alderaan

I don't think jedi in and of itself was the real problem.  The implementation of jedi, especially at pub 9, was the problem.  They removed all the risk but left the reward.  I was, and still am, in favor of permadeath and saber TEF for jedi in this timeframe.  The perpetual dumbing down of the game is what did it.  Jedi were just a focal point because of how often the implementation, both in obtaining and playing, of jedi was changed.

I don't see the real issue being that jedi EXISTED, but more how they were implemented.  I believe that many people that say it's because jedi were in game would realize it was really the imlementation if they stopped to think about it logically.

The reason i asked this question was because while playing (Pre-cu and Cu) i would hear people gripe . so i started asking why they disliked jedi in the game and it came down to 3 answers.

    1. Jedi werent in this time line.

ok reasonable answer, kinda believed it myself.

    2. dont like jedi as a char, so no one should have one.

    ok their opinion

    3. to lazy to unlock and grind jedi and actually jealous of anyone who took the time to do it.

not even going to reply about that one.

after talking to about 100 people over a years time it was about 60% 30% 10%, ive lost the notes i was taking at the time so its not as exact as i would like it to be.Thanks for your responces.

Jedi would have been fine and SHOULD be an alpha class.  But they should have had their own content and not been part of the "regular" GCW.  And should have faced risks such as xp and skill loss if they did.

When you created your Jedi after unlock, your faction should have been Dark or Light, no longer Rebel or Imperial.

Jedi as they were originally supposed to be would have been fine in my opinion.  If they had come up with a different means other than hologrinding that actually made sense, kept it unknown, if they had truly remained rare, kept perma death.  Yeah I could have lived with  that....

I've always contended that instead of SWG, they had made KOTOR 3 an MMO. The mechanics for the game are dmn near perfect and you wouldn't have to change much to make it persistent-world. Maybe I'll get my wish and it will come out on 360.

Combat characters could gain Jedi though combat activities.  I was a non-combat character. I could not gain Jedi through non-combat activities. Jedi granted combat and crafting advantages. That was my issue with them.

(This is speaking of the time surrounding the village, of course.)

I didn't have a problem with Jedi per se, just didn't think there should be any in a time in which only Vader, Palpatine, Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Luke were the only Jedi/Sith.  I wouldn't mind a KOTOR-like MMO in which Jedi are numerous (although everyone being a Jedi does tend to take the mystique away), just didn't think a Ep4-5 game was the place for it.  I wasn't a canon-adherent when I joined SWG, in fact I joined hoping to become Jedi (never actually did, did all the requisite work twice though), but I became a canon-nut the longer I was in the game.

Consider a potential parallel problem in Star Trek Online - does everyone get to be the captain?  No.  There are many positions that need to be filled, and only one person (per ship) gets to be captain.  Does this mean there will be lots of well-lead ships with little or no crews in STO?  Perhaps (this is one of my greater concerns, waiting to see how the dev teams tackles this).  Is it fun and exciting to open hailing frequencies?  Or set course?  Or fix the malfunctioning food replicators?  Nope.  The captain is sort of the alpha position.  Not everyone wants to be captain, but most do.  Find those former non-AFK ents now and talk them into becoming part of your crew, you'll be the envy of all the other STO captains, trust me.

Back on topic though - Jedi shouldn't have been in game, period, simply because of the SW history.  Look how it's caused the ruination of the game.  First, no one unlocked.  So they add holocrons.  Then everyone begins the hologrind.  Too many Jedi run around, $OE decides to gate them.  So they add the village of Aurilia.  So now everyone is on Dath at the village or on Dant or Dath grinding XP.  Too many Jedi run around, $OE decides to make them free to all.  $OE pisses off every player who made Jedi in the old system, many leave.  Noobs come, play for a bit, then go back to WoW.  $OE now has a highly-pissed former playerbase, a smaller sub group than before, and the worst rep in the industry.
