population is good. I mean, to me DAOC is completely playable with only 2 packed servers, and EQ2 certainly has 2 packed ones and some very very well populated ones as well.
another good one (non pvp) is najena, its the unnoficial est server, but also has tonnes of players from all different time zones so you can usually find a group at pretty much any time of the day(its often reffered to as the server that never sleeps) And as far as the community goes it is a very low drama server, the majority of folks are very freindly.
I asked the same question when i first bought EQ2, to sum it up ...
the most populated server is Crushbone and it's a PvE server
most populated PvP server is Nagafen
there're a couple of things to be said though, Crushbone is a normal server, i feel RP makes the community more friendly and mature and more fun, so i chose Antonia Bayle, which is nearly the same pop as CB, Nagafen is a gankfest, u WILL die a lot trying to get to highest levels, and i mean a LOT like in every minute .
CB has higher average level, which is a good thing, Nagafen has the lowest average level, in the 3.
in any of the 3 servers playing during the busy hours (1PM PST to 10PM PST) is the most populated.
so my advise is to try AB, and CB, make 2 chrs during those hours and check things out, try the middle of the week too, cause on Saturday it tends to be very crowded on any server anyway.

PvP or PvE?
PVP Wise, Nagafen followed by Venekor.
PVE.. I believe the AB server or whatever the RP one is.
Not real sure which way I want to go yet, give a server name for each.
Robots will kill you!
Antonia Bayle (RP) PvE
Nagafen (PvP)

All you really need is 1 server though.

PVE Server - Oaisis
Both servers are very popular and have some great guilds.
Enjoy!
There is a website with an eq2 census, don't know how accurate it is.
Nagafen seems higher in population than Vox, but Vox is a Station Exchange server.
