I think they are still running a free trial, called "Trial of the Isle" that you can get from the EQ2 website. You might want to give it a try by generating a character on both the Freeport and Quenos isles to get a feel for the game.
Not sure how long you've gone between games, but you also might be suffering from MMORPG burnout. I've taken a break from EQ2 for a bit just because it's begining to be more of the same old, same old. From what I hear on the forums, alot of people burn out on their choice game and want to switch to a new game in which they can do something different. It sounds like that might be what you're looking for. The problem is that very little is different beween games.
I have tryed Eve Online, its an good game but i like to control my avantar ( "person" ) not just an spaceship, reyws The Saga of ryzom i just could played for about 2 month, got tired of the game =/ and now i cant find any good MMO ....
Truthfully I think the game is well boring try out some free games like knight online its much better. Be sure to go to knight online world the other one isnt free. And if your thinking about getting it do the trial of the isle first I bought the game its ok at the start it does get boring though so if u like ti buy it and check out some other this while your at it.. >> WoW is the same prize
EQ2 is a very good game but it isnt really a sandbox. I guess you could give it a try and see if you like it anyway, or if you are set on a sandbox style game Ive heard good things about saga of ryzome.
This game is based off stats, ie what you mentioned of loot, armor, weapons, ect.
It is also based on level. ie a level 30 mob will resist and dodge a level 25 player alot and vice versa.
I would say eq2 is a grinding game at best. You grind writs, tradeskills, levels, guild levels, quest .......... others will present a pretty world that eq2 is but when it gets down to it ............. it does not add up.
really you would have to explain more what you are looking for out of an MMO. Who knows you might be one of these types that likes the grind, then i would have games for that, or maybe your looking for more story orriented game, or perhaps group drivin compaired to solo driven or raid driven. Give a few more varibles if you could and im sure the resident MMO conasuers could steer you in the right direction. Its better then just gettin a sales pitch for eq2.
actually, i agree with the guy that said u might b suffering from MMO burnout. u sited alot of the symtoms, ive been there, some others have been there. the best advise is to abstain from all games for about a wk or 2, if u can, then come back to ur fav. choice of game and relax and enjoy the details that u prolly didnt notice the first time u played the game. believe me, it works. jumping from game to game doesnt really help, been there, done that, still have most of the games installed on me machine. EQII is alot like all the other games out there, not really THAT much that is different to hold ur attention if ur burnt out. ill tell u what i want to see, Oblivion meets MMO, many have tried, all have failed, thus far. i would have to say tho, that EQII comes about the closest, imo. heres to hoping Vanguard takes the cake.
now the translation for lillian who hates leetspeak:

I'll tell you what I want to see, Oblivion meets Massively Multiplayer Online gaming. Many have tried, all have failed, thus far. I would have to say though, that EverQuest II comes about the closest, in my opinion. Here is to hoping Vanguard takes the cake(a.k.a. does the job).

That's such crap. I've played many different games. WoW, DAoC, EQ1, Anarchy Online, DDO, SWG, and EQ2. This one is by far the best out of all of them. Don't lie. If YOU think the game sucks, then say YOU think it sucks. Don't chicken out and say crap that's only personal opinion.
I currently play World of Warcraft and it is enjoyable. Even though the Burning Crusade is one of the biggest releases this holiday season in the gaming industry(if there is no delay), I am still thinking about switching to another MMORPG. I have a few co-workers who play WoW, but there is one who sticks to his Everquest II. We talked about MMOs in general. I came from Asheron's Call; that was my first MMORPG that I truely enjoyed. I told him that I was looking for exploration, and role playing which was one thing I enjoyed while playing AC. World of Warcraft doesn't really have a good roleplaying community/servers, it's primarily found in individual guilds who are dedicated to it. And even though some of the sights in WoW are amazing I still felt that accessible traveling left out some of the exploration I've grown to love. Does EQII offer this?
